My Snake Refused A Meal my ball python hasnt eaten for 2 months now, and that isnt her longest hunger strike. BP’s are notorious for not eating and it isnt a big deal if they miss 2 feedings. Also you should try for so long, if she doesnt eat then you shouldnt stress her out by trying to get her to. she will eat eventually. good luck.

My Snake Refused A Meal
In my experience when you feed a BP a hamster or a gerbil you will have trouble getting them to go back to mice..Some snakes will not eat just before a shed and others will..Its just that time of year when many BP’s refuse to eat for a while, give it time!!!

My Snake Refused A Meal some ball pythons or any snakes for that matter will refuse food just b4 and during shed. Some bp’s will refuse food during winter, some will refuse it on days ending in "Y". I would not recomend feeding a girbil or hampster, I would recomend waiting till the snake has at least come out of opaque and leaving a f/t fooditem in the enclosure overnight. He should take the item after he sheds in most cases.

My Snake Refused A Meal There usually isn’t any need to try to feed a ball python when it about to shed so don’t offer food then. Some balls will stop eating in the winter months and not eat again until spring so yours may be going through this. I have one that stops eating around the first of November and won’t eat again until March. I think it has something to do with the amount of sunshine that comes in the window and using electric lights for 12 hours a day doesn’t matter to her. I do offer her food every few weeks but she refuses. Don’t feed hamsters or gerbils or you may never get her eating mice or rats again especially frozen/thawed. I have had trouble getting balls to take frozen/thawed in the first place and it takes lots of patience to do so. Good luck but don’t worry so much.

My Snake Refused A Meal I wouldn’t refreeze anything because each time you thaw something out it decays more and bacteria builds up in it. Some bacteria can kill humans and probably snakes and other animals as well. If one or more of my snakes doesn’t eat a frozen/thawed mouse or rat I toss it just to be safe. Try feeding her a day or two after she sheds.

My Snake Refused A Meal Of course it is better to not refreeze. You are aware of the risks you are taking though. I will admit that I have done it and there are other times I will throw out the rodent. I usually do not but in some instances I feel secure about it. About the ball not eating. Consider it RARE for a ball python to eat while in shed. I have 2 that will do it and have delt with far more that will not. I have a green anaconda who refuses food more than a week before you notice her eyes glaze over and will NEVER eat while in shed. And it is very common for mature ball pythons to refuse food during the winter months.

My Snake Refused A Meal I’ve fed right after my snake shed(like an hour afterwards...just enough time to thaw a rat) with no ill effects. So I myself would say anytime after a shed will be fine. But if you want to stay on a certain feeding schedule, you can just wait until the next feeding day after the shed. For instance, say my bp shed on a monday, and her feeding day is friday. I’d just wait till friday to feed her. They’re not gonna waste away or anything. As for the shedding cycle, generally the eyes stay blue for 4-5 days, then when they clear up, it’ll shed within two days. Atleast that’s how my bp sheds. She does it right on time everytime too, lol.

My Snake Refused A Meal Do number two and feed it the large frozen/thawed mouse. Get really aggressive moving the mouse around in front of the snakes nose but please hold it by the tail with a pair of tongs.Do number three and feed it every week on the same day of the week. If you get in the habit of feeding every Sunday then you will automatically feed on Sunday or what ever day is best for you. If the snake is in shed on a feed day, just wait until the next feed day to feed it. Don’t worry so much about your snake not eating as ball pythons are known picky eaters especially during the winter months.

My Snake Refused A Meal Well, I’d say you don’t have to worry about night time temperature drops in the cage, as the room temperature generally drops naturally at night anyway, so any change in the temperatures naturally would be fine(as long as it’s not drastic, lol). I keep the same temperatures during the day as during the night, and vice versa. As for light, even though ball pythons are nocturnal, they do benefit from a light cycle of some sort. Whether it be a light in the room on a timer, or natural sunlight from a room window, something like that. I have my window in my room covered up by blankets to keep drafts out(winter gets drafty in this old junker of a house, lol), so I had no light in my room all day and night. For a while I kept my snake’s cage in the dark thinking "oh well, bp’s are nocturnal, it won’t bother them". But I started to notice a change in her behaviour. She started to have erratic sleep schedules, and would be wandering her cage at random times. I asked some people who know their stuff with ball pythons, and they recommend I have some sort of light source to keep my bp on a light cycle of some sort. Since then, I’ve just had a heat lamp with a day time bulb hanging high over my bp’s cage, so it’ll shine some light in the tank, but not dry it out with too much heat. She’s back to normal now. As for offering a smaller sized prey item, it’s up to you. I’d say try an adult mouse and see if that peaks his interest. I’ve heard of people’s bp’s switching over to rats, then suddenly going on a hunger strike, only to break it with a mouse. Hmm...that’s a longer post than I originally meant to have.

My Snake Refused A Meal Hmm, maybe try feeding in the cage. In a snakes point of view, being taken from the safety of their home, and plopped on a big open area, then being confronted with a rat, might stress them out a bit. Bp’s are ambushers anyway. They like to sit in their hide waiting for prey to come along. I say try feeding your bp in his cage. If you have loose substrate and you’re afraid he’ll swallow some, lay a sheet of newspaper down in the cage. One thing I didn’t see in your steps are any warming of the rat just before feeding. In my feeding steps, just before feeding, I put the rat under a heat lamp for a few minutes to get the rats body temperature up. Then when I’m ready to offer the rat to my bp, I put the rats nose right on the light bulb of the heat lamp. This gets the tip of the nose real warm so my bp will recognize it with her heat pits. She usually strikes right on the nose when I do this. With the cage as a secure "hunting" area, and a nice warm rat to entice your bp to strike, I’d think your odds of breaking it’s little fast will be pretty good. Hope it helps.

Message: Thanks so much for the tips and suggestions but i have 2 more questions. 1. How do u dangle your rat (do u hang it by its tail and move it up and down, do u simulate its walking by dragging it across the substrate, ect.) 2. Can You Refreeze A Rat?? 3. Are My Temps Off (Day Hot=88.9 / Day Cool=75.2 and night is ALMOST the same) So i should feed like this: 1. thaw and warm up rat 3. Dangle in front of prey when snake is hiding in cage. 4. DONE Maleeh P.S. I use tongs for feeding P.S. Should i use a UTH (only heating source now) for night And my Heat lamp for day?? this will provide higher temps... I also already have a Heat lamp that i dont use... My Reply:
1. I place the rat in the tongs at mid body, rest it on the cage floor(with a sheet of newspaper laid down so my bp doesn’t eat any substrate), and wiggle it a bit to get her attention. She usually has it snapped up before I even get it to the cage floor though, lol. I think it’s because of my warming techniques. 2. You can refreeze a rat once, yes. But generally it just makes things worse because once it’s thawed once, it starts to decompose. Then refreezing it and thawing it again makes the stomach lining thin and makes it more likely that the gut will bust when your bp constricts. It’s no problem really. As long as the bp gets all the rat and guts down. It’s just messy and smelly, lol. 3. Your temps are sorta off I guess. The warm side isn’t too bad. Generally the warm side should be between 90-95 degrees. But some people keep it at 88-90 and do just fine. Your cool side is a bit low though. The lowest I’d let the cool side get is 80 degrees. Some people say 78 is okay, but I’m not too sure about even that temperature. Try and bump your temps up a bit if you can. Shoot for 90-93 warm side, and 80-85 cool side. I can’t really say there is a certain way to feed the snake frozen thawed. But I can tell you my method that works for me everytime. I get the best feeding responses with it: 1. Place frozen bagged rat in a bowl or dish. Fill dish with hot tap water. Since the rat usually floats in the water, weigh it down with an object. I use a glass. Refill water every 10 minutes, or when water becomes luke warm. Keep replacing water until rat is fully thawed. 2. Go to snake room. Take the thawed rat out of the bag, and place on a dish of some sort. Put two books or anything with a bit of height on either side of the dish, and place heat lamp over top of them to heat the rat to a good body temperature. Heat it for a few minutes. As you’re doing this, prepare for feeding. I do this by removing my snakes hides from its cage, laying a sheet of newspaper down in a feeding area in the cage, then placing the snake on the paper. Once the snake is on the paper, she knows it’s feeding time. Then I go back to the rat. Put the rat in tongs at mid-to-lower body, and place the rats nose directly on the heat lamps bulb for 5 seconds. This will cause the snake to see the nose as a focal point with the heat pits, and will have a bigger chance of striking right on the nose perfectly. 3. With the tongs, place the rat on the newspaper, and wiggle it gently while having the rats head facing the snake at all times to ensure a nice strike to the head. 4. Jump as the snake strikes the rat with such force, that it almost knocks the tongs out of your hand. 5. Watch snake eat. :) It might sound like a lot, but it’s only a lot when you describe it. I’d say generally, from thawing, to feeding, it takes me about 30-40 minutes. Mainly because I leave the rat in the hot water thawing out for a bit longer than needed since I’m always watching something on tv, lol. The heat on the rat really seems to entice the snake to recognize it as food and strike it eagerly. I’ve had some feedings where my ball python turned around in her cage, lunged up in the air, and took the rat from the tongs as I was just about to place it in the cage. It might just be my ball pythons feeding response, or the method of feeding I use. I dunno. You can try it though. Good luck! -Cody

My Snake Refused A Meal How long has it been since your bp has eaten? And how old is your bp? I wouldn’t jump to the last resort(feeding live) just yet. As long as your bp hasn’t lost weight and isn’t thin or anything, I wouldn’t worry. Are your temperatures and humidity and stuff good? Maybe there’s something stressing the snake out, making it too stressed to eat.And to the person who mentioned that bp’s not eating is normal, I dont think it’s normal at all. It happens, but it isn’t normal for them to do. A healthy and happy bp will eat regularly. If they’re not eating, there’s something bothering them. Sometimes it’s stress related to the husbandry. Sometimes it’s an illness. Sometimes when a bp is sexually mature, they’ll go off feed for the winter months because they’re too interested in looking for a mate.

My Snake Refused A Meal Incorrect pelota. It is very common and normal for a mature bp to go off feed for the winter months. This is the time males will go into a kind of hybernation where they will be making viable sperm in the cooler temps. If the snake is young (less than 5-10 months for a male and 2+ years for a female) then its abnormal but even a healthy and happy bo will go off feed during this time and be perfectly happy in a few months when it goes right back on.

My Snake Refused A Meal That’s why I mentioned the part about sexually mature adults and stuff. Also, if the temperatures, both warm/cool side, and ambient, are kept in the right places in the winter months, a ball python can still eat like a champ and not go into it’s winter food strike. What triggers it is the cooler weather. That’s why it’s ideal to keep drafts out of the snake room, and keep the ambient temps at 80 or so.

My Snake Refused A Meal missing a meal is nothing to worry about. Should be fine over two weeks, heck even two months, lol. Don’t stress over it, it happens with almost all snakes at some point, keep at it, it’ll eat when it wants to.

My Snake Refused A Meal I think you should be cool and calm down a bit. Ball pythons often stop eating this time of the year. I have one adult female and she stops eating around the first of November and doesn’t eat again until March. I worried like you are worrying now when I first got her but now I know it is coming. I think the reason for the hungry strike has something to do with the light. My snake room never changes temperature and the cages never change more than a degree or two but I do have south facing window so they room is in sunlight during the day hours. I also think that the sunlight overrides the artificial lighting in the room because I tried leaving the light on in the winter a couple years ago to see if that would entice her to eat and it didn’t.So, be cool and calm down and don’t worry so much. I really do think that she will start eating again when she wants too.

My Snake Refused A Meal don’t resort to live, it’ll not help anything and may be even more dangerous to a nonfeeding snake. bp’s have been known to go off feed for months with no ill effects.
