Damn it! Warn me when you post a tarantula, lol. They give me the creeps. :(Still...I’ve been toying with the idea of getting one, to get over my fears of arachnids. I figure if my mom could (slightly)get over her fear of snakes, I should be able to get over my fear of arachnids. Or atleast tarantulas. The small house spiders creep me out more than tarantulas for some reason.

Don’t confuse a simple "fear of" something with an actual "phobia".
Many people fear snakes....usually because they are misinformed or ignorant.....Many times if you can educate them, they tend to lose their fear. My mom used to be so afraid of snakes (do to ignorance), and now she will happily hold my Koa at 7 feet.A phobia is a fear with no rational explanation. It can disrupt your life and interfere with your ability to function. I bring this up because I see people get over their fear of snakes all the time.
I am an actual arachnophobic....You can teach me about spiders all you want, and I will still become paralized with fear if surrounded by them....This has actually happened to me.....it was horrible....I couldn’t move. At just the sight of a spider....my eyes fill with tears....and my whole body shivers. This does not happen to me with pictures or movies, though. Just the real thing. And for some reason, Pelota, Tarantulas don’t seem to have the same effect on me either. The absolute worse thing for me to see...is just a regular house spider....running. When they run, I freak.

Have you ever seen or read "The wide window" in the series of unfortunate events? If not, aunt Josephine has a phobia to everything. She is scared of dorrnobs, because they could shatter and hit your eye. And she is afraid of stoves, because they can catch the house on fire. She is afraid of refridgerators, because they can fall on you and smush you. She is afraid of turning on the heater, because it can low up the house. She is afraid of realtors, for no reason at all.In the end of the book, or movie, a hurricane hits her house, and EVERYTHING she was afraid of happens. The refridgerator falls, the doornob shatters,the stove catches on fire, etc. And, a realtor comes.
BUT, she had a reason to be scared of all the other things, but she had NO reason to be scared of realtors. The had Realtorphobia, but was just scared of all the other things. I am scared of spiders, because often it is hard to tell wich ones are venemous. And that scares me, becuase like...I dont wanna get bit. I will cry if I se a little tiny spider crawling. But turantulas dont effect me as much, probably because I have seen people hold them. I too thought about getting a T for a while, to get over my fear. I dont have any phobias, just fears. And spiders is definately on of my fears.

Well I’m not sure whether my mom had a fear, or a phobia of snakes. All I know is back in high school some jerk shoved a garter snake down my mom’s back, and she freaked out and cried and stuff. Traumatized her. When I first planned on getting a snake, her first reaction was "NO F@#%ING WAY", then over the course of a few months, I kept on watching some educational snake shows on animal planet and such, and she started getting used to the sight of a snake(before that, she’d cringe and freak even when looking at a picture of one), and I kept educating her on snakes. Sooner or later, she was warming up to the idea, and realizing that it’s something I really want, and isn’t just a phase, she started asking me stuff about snakes, but ball pythons more specifically. After that, she told me I could get the snake, but it’d have to be kept in my room at all times, and she doesn’t wanna see it.
Well, blah blah blah, skip ahead a few months later, and I finally found a local breeder in Toronto. I contacted the breeder, we made an agreement, and I purchased a beautiful female ball python that was later named Pelota. The night before getting the ball, my mom was asking me all silly questions like "is it venomous?" and "seriously Cody, tell me....can this thing kill us?". It shocked me that she’d wait for the last minute to ask if it was venomous, lol. Then the day I got the snake, my mom was at ease enough to take some pics of me holding her when I got her out of her shipping box. She wouldn’t get 10 feet close to the snake, so the pictures turned out crappy since she was literally across the room for them.  After a few weeks, my mom was used to me holding the snake and used to seeing me walk around with her, so she seemed to be eased a bit more seeing her own son holding a snake, and not dying or being hurt or freaked out or anything. She finally had a few beers one night with her friend, and got that lovely beer courage, and asked to hold Pelota. She held her, until Pelota moved slightly. Then my mom freaked out and told me to take her.
Long story less longer, my mom now will hold Pelota randomly while having a few drinks with friends. She still can’t seem to hold her any other time unless she’s had at least one drink of beer, lol. She’s eased up though, and has actually agreed that this spring I can get a nicaraguan boa from the same breeder I got Pelota. YAY!
Boababe, I didn’t know doorknobs can shatter, lol. Do they do this often?

Pelota....your story kind of gives me a "warm fuzzy feeling"I just love stories about people who’s perception of reptiles (especially snakes) gets totally turned around. Just goes to show how some of these stereotypes are embedded in our heads our whole lives....but it is never to late to learn. Snakes are not for everyone....so even if it takes your Mom a beer to hold one....I think that is truely great.

Perhaps you guys fear the small house spider more than a Tarantula because you know you are way more likely to come across the small spider than a Tarantula in your home. As for me, no phobias, but keep me far away from roaches!!! (shudder)

I cannot even try to guess why I have this irrational fear.....It goes back to my childhood.....before I even knew what a "spider" was. My mom can remember when I was a toddler, and if I came into contact with a web.....I would spaz out. I have been afraid of spiders (and their webs) my entire life.

Ew, webs, lol. Theres nothing I hate more than walking down my walkway in the summer, and going past the two bushes that are on either end of the walkway, and getting a face full of spider web. It just sticks to you, in your hair, everything. Then I start to get the itches, thinking "what if there were some spiders on the web and now they’re stuck in my hair". It freaks me out. :( As long as the spider, or web, isn’t touching me, I’m fine with them. But when they’re on me, thats when it creeps me out. I’m dreading the summer....our house has a problem with spiders. Frequently I’ll be on the computer at night, and a spider will just drop from the ceiling right in front of me. Last summer, one lowered right into the keyboard, and I was frantically mashing keys trying to kill it, lol. Then the one time one fell from the ceiling(literally fell) and started crawling towards me on my chest. UGH *shudders*
I think my fear of spiders developed back when I was a little kid. I was at my grammas house and was on the toilet. I remember having atleast a half a dozen little spiders crawling up my legs while I was sitting on the toilet(of all things..). I started freaking out. Apparently my gramma had a little spider nest behind her toilet...

kool stories people lol! im not overly keen on spiders i think i fear the house spiders more than turantulars in the summer we always get harvest spiders in our house we have a very old house with loads of places for spiders to hide in and always get them!!PELOTA! i didnt realise you were a guy(sorry lol) thats a good story to hear i wish my mum and dad would warm to the idea of me wanting to get a bp!! i have a little chequered garter which is very quick! so i cant exactly take it around the house incase it slips away! im the only person thats holds it, i wont let any of my friends hold it just incase and as i said earlier there are alot of little places a garter to sneak into and never come back :( so i have to be extra careful!
Its soo annoying because my parents are like no more pets i dont want the house turning into a zoo, i mean jeese! i have 2adf’s 2fbt’s and a garter in my room, thats nothing compared to some of you guys right? lol i always question my parents..like if i get another snake its not going to effect you is it?? and there like well not really but i dont want anymore animals in the house! gr...lol i cant wait to leave home! i would like to get a RTB and probably a pair of beardies and about a million other herps lol but im sure that wont be for along time yet :(
oh well..lol just thought id add to the convo! :)

*LOL* Pelota, if you ever come to South Carolina and go herping with us, I’ll have you led the way just to clear out the spider webs. Just kidding, I would never do anything like that if I knew you didn’t like them but walking into a spider web is just one of the things you have to put up here in the woods. I actually like spiders because they eat files that and flies bother me and bother my horses.Scott, you are wise beyond your years. I would guess that your friends probably give you a little bit of a hard time about holding your snake but I think you are 100% right in not letting them. I would hate to have to punch out one of my friends because he let one of my snakes loose.

thanks SCSnakeman lol, none of my friends have snakes well one of my friends has an adult corn snake and a bp(which is his mums) i would probably let him hold it...then again i probably wouldnt lol. lol i really really want a bp though they are soo interesting and ’cool’ lol my friends mums bp is soo calm she just wrapped around my arm and wasnt jumpy atall(my friends doesnt even hold it!!) Im not sure why my mate is like that i think the dea of having a snake was a bit of a phase for him..luckily his mum has more of an interest!!! I would gladly take there snakes of them but i dont think his mum would ever part with them lol plus my mum wouldnt let me have them! :( Oh well...i’ll persuade my parents someday..maybe when im just about to leave home they’ll let me get one lol!

I have 7 reptiles. 6 in my room and 1 in the hall. 2 Leos, 3 BP’s(about to get another), 1 RTB, 1 Crestie. I also have 10 other non-reptiles. I dont think I would consider your room a zoo, lol

thank you boababe!! lmao well i dont think they’ll change their mind that easily, im trying to sound really big headed to my parents with all this snake info and their like "what the hell??" lol hopefully they’ll realise there isnt any harm in me getting another snake!
Im pretty sure its the idea of keeping rodents in the freezer that bugs them the most! :SIm sure ive asked this before but how long could i house a baby bp in a 10gal..20"W x 10"D 12"H...? sorry to be a pain everyone..
