250 is not bad for a nice big bright female. I would not buy from pet smart anyways. I think it is a shame pastels go for what they do. I paid 650 (this probally pisses others off too) for my first male pastel. It is hard to move a male pastel becase people have devauled these anmials. Now none wants to waste time buying a male pastel when you can’t get anything outta of the babies. I am glad they have the high price tag.

Also if somone comes in and buys the snake then who is dumb the person buying it or the one selling it. Anyone going to breed needs to look at both sides of the markets. Someday it will be you trying to sell that pastel.

I have yet to even see a Ball Python in the Petsmart near me. Now Petco, they’re the ones with the snakes. It’s pretty bad that they are selling a little normal Columbian Red Tail boa for $175 when you can get one from a breeder or expo for like $50. Of course, my petco near me does take good care of their animals, prices are a bit steep but at least they’re taken care of.

Gonna be calling them today actually about my job app.

The PetCo here had a pastel they were selling for $300. Poor thing basically sat in a tank for 5 months and looked awful. No one who goes to a place like that for a "pet" is going to want to spend $300. At least not where I live. Last time I went in there, it was gone. I hope to God someone bought him/her and they didn’t die. :(
If I’d have had the room, or the money, I’d have taken them home in a heartbeat.

I dislike the large chain pet shops. We cant begin to count how many rescues our family got from ignorant buyers who listen to the "pet people" at these places. People who tell them heat rocks are great for a snake, then wonder why the snake has burns all over. It wouldnt be so bad if theyd teach there staff to give the correct info.

Another issue I have with any pet shop is they push to SELL and dont care for the animal while its there. They over charge,under care for and send you home with all the wrong info. {just my experiance}

i agree that these pet stores are completely idiotic... i got a parrot from there... over priced of course

i got him as a "fancy green cheeked conure" but he wasnt even a green cheek conure.. he was a totally different species!! a uncommon brown throat conure and he was soo emaciated and sick that we almost lost him twice!

ive seen "fancy boas" and "fancy turtles" and all that at these petstores... sigh

Chances are, they are not high quality animals. Why would a breeder sell their animals to pet stores if they could sell it directly to someone for a lot more money? Because nobody wants their low quality animal, perhaps. Plus, no guarantees they will even let you pop the animal to see if it is female... the stress of pet store display cage life... being underfed and probably mistreated....

Yeah, not worth it.

OVER HEAD.

Pet store prices is to cover, food, employee care and paychecks. You go to a breeder as their over head is no where near a pet stores that has employees and such.

Id have no problem paying a higher price for a clean pastel. Cheaper means nothing but hurting the hobby your entering.

I’m not talking about the price of the animal, I’m talking about the quality of the morph and the "care" many pet stores give their animals that makes it not worth buying from them (not because it’s $250). IF the animal is actually taken care of and is a clean looking animal, I’d say it’s absolutely worth it. But I have seen many dead and dying animals in pet shops (ball pythons included) due to mistreatment, and I absolutely believe in avoiding buying anything from pet stores at all costs. And no, I’m not talking about animals who LOOK dead in cages, I have personally asked to look at the animals and handled snakes that had been dead for so long they were rock solid and stiff.

I can understand the price issues {higher price pays the store to stay open} BUT I dont understand how you pay and employee to know 0 about the pets {AT a pet store} Or why you would trust a person to sell you a pet when its visible they know squat about it. If I were these chain stores Id at least give these people a book {wich if Im correct they sell IN store?} and have them know the basics...or at the very least hand the book to the customer.

There are good mom and pop pet stores around. I think the chain stores ahve lost whats important, the well being of the animals they sell. For me theres to many that need homes to buy one {as much as Id love to have the morphs, Id rather save a life}

I am not argueing with ya- I can see where I may have been mistaken as saying pastels are cheap and deserve to be cheap. I agree with you that the nice bright and clean ones ( well, add tons of blushing IMO) are worth much more. Its sad that pastels prices have dropped, but some, the ones that look practically like normals, really arent worth that much. Heck, I had bought a male pastel for 150 last year, and he was worth it, when i am seeing them this year for 50-75 dollars. I would still pay a higher price for a quality pastel. But I agree, cheap quality pastels are indeed, cheap. High quality ones, and more expensive.

Sorry if my first initial postmade it seem I thought all pastels should be cheap. It was more along the lines you can get them cheaper from breeders- and as others have sytated, with a guarentee, and propably in better health.

on a breeder’s/genetics perspective why are pastel males not as useful?

here in Canada we still only have normals for really high prices.

personally i think it’s not a bad thing that the petstore prices are that high.
At least this will stop impulse buyers from walking in seeing a cheap snake and buying it. $300 pastel versus say $150 at a breeders.

impulse buyers will not buy it just cause its pretty and cheap. If they are going to buy from a breeder they have most likely researched and took the time to find the breeder in the first place.

Lets see wild rodents are diseased and may have poisens on them that could kill your snakes thats why i mean if you wanna risk that or expensive vet bills by all means continue to feed them that but from a health stand point it aint worth the risk and if you dont want to feed rodents that have been fed dog food raise them yourself and feed them rodent food sheesh

lol I hope you realize if you get a water dragon their cage requirements when they become an adult surpass a 75 gallon tank you’re better off with a bearded dragon unless your willing to dump the money into building a big enough enclosure for a WD.
