 BITE ????

How readily will a BP bite? I have had him a month and I’m still a little leary about handling him. When his head turns toward me i start getting really nervous. Please reply with info and if and when you’ve been bitten by your BP?
Thank You.
JW

 BITE ????

Our BP has bit once...I’m still leary about handeling him too....but, he can’t get used to you if you don’t try to handle him. Just don’t make any quick movements, wash your hands with soap and hot water before you go near him (thats where we made our mistake...we were holding the mouse before we picked him up), don’t hold him during shedding, don’t hold him for 48 hours after feeding...we also move our snake to a seperate container for feeding so he doesnt associate food with his cage. We use a small rubbermaid container, its solid navy-blue, and we put the lid on (the lid has 5 small holes drilled in it, like 1/2 cm). We have him in there with the mouse (frozen-thawed) for about 15-20 minutes, near a heat light so he stays warm, then we open the lid, and let him crawl out into his cage. Well, thats all I know! Good luck!

I also feed him in a separate container. I am still feeding him frozen/thawed fuzzies. I let him finish and then about 5 minutes Ill lift him and place him bck in and leave him a couple days. Please read my other post on hoping I am doing everything correctly. It’s about shedding. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!:) Thanks!

 BITE ????

Fuzzies are pretty small for a ball python. They can usually take small adult mice from the time they’re out of the egg. Maybe try an adult mouse next feeding. Any mouse or rat that is the same thickness as the ball pythons thickest part is a perfect sized meal.

You really have no reason to be nervous at all. Ball pythons are one of the most docile snakes, and would rather curl in a ball and hide their head in fear rather than strike at you. If you give them no reason to strike, they won’t strike. Why would they bite you randomly for no reason? You’re not small enough to be food for them, and you’re not hurting them, so yeah, no need to worry, lol. Honestly I was never nervous when holding my bp when I first got her. Actually, I was nervous, but it was because I was afraid I might drop or hurt her in some way. I didn’t want to harm or scare her, so I was very gentle. Now I know my snakes limits and can read her feelings and stuff, so I’m at ease with her at all times.
I have been bitten once. It was when she was 6 months old. I had just got done feeding her a nice juicy rat, and she was nosing around and wedging her head between her digital thermometer and her cage wall. I simply wanted to move her head and point her to her warm hide so she’d zoom in there and digest for a few days. I do it all the time, and it usually works fine. But this time I forgot to let her rest a bit after the meal, so she was still in feeding mode, and didn’t want to be bothered with at the time. When I touched her, she swung around real fast and gave me a quick "leave me alone" bite on the hand. I laughed a bit, thought "aww how cute. my little girl has some spunk tonight", then moved her towards her warm hide, with no problems. The bite didn’t hurt at all, despite leaving a few fang marks and some blood. Honestly, if I didn’t see her strike at me, I wouldn’t have known she bit me. I don’t even recall feeling anything at all. She was so fast, lol.

So anyway, yes, they can bite, but they won’t bite for no reason. So you’re perfectly safe when handling your bp. There is no reason to be nervous or scared. That’s the snakes job. Just wash your hands after handling rodents(whether pets, or snake food), and don’t stress out, bother, or hurt your bp, and you won’t have to worry about being bit. But even then, there’s no reason to worry. Their bites don’t hurt. Even as adult ball pythons, the scariest thing about the bite is the sight of them striking at you, not the pain. Gets the adrenaline flowing.

 BITE ????

That looks kind of skinny. If he bites that might be why. Try feeding small adult mice. I have never been bitten or struck at by my brazilian rainbow boa or ball ython although both dont seem to like the vet much.lol

 BITE ????

I have had my 3.5 foot male for over a year, he’s never bitten. However I garantee if I smelled like food I would get tagged in a second. Bp’s generaly don’t hurt, and are not prone to biteing. However if you were to find a large group of them in a petshop and reach your hand in I can almost garantee most would do nothing and one or two would light u up. If your nervous, wear gloves for a while and a long sleeved shirt. Once you get used to your snake you should be able to tell when it’s being defensive and when it’s fine. My bp is a doll, it would take alot of work to coax a strike from it, same with my dumerils, hognose and corn..my colombian rainbow gets nervous quickly..I know how to handle him..but if I get lazy he lets me know...he has triggers which set him off.
