 SHEDDING HELP

Hi all,
My BP has started to shed...well, his head/face has shed....but his body is all dry and crackly, but not shedding completely. I have sprayed him with shedding aid, and put water on him. I have heard some say put him in water..how do you do that? Fill a rubbermaid container? or just lay him in the water dish? please advise.

 SHEDDING HELP

Fill a rubbermaid container with about an inch or two of water. Basically enough water to cover your snake, but not too deep where the snake has to swim constantly. You can also put a rock or something similar for a platform for the snake to rest on if it gets tired. It’ll also serve as a tool to rub the shed off. Do all that, and put the snake in it. Then place the top of the rubbermaid on. You might want to drill a few holes in the top for a bit of air. Place the rubbermaid on a heat pad on low, so it’ll keep the water around 80-85 degrees. This should create a snake sauna. Leave your snake in for 20-30 minutes, or as long as the snake will put up with it. After the sauna, lay the snake on a towel, then wrap the towel around it so it’ll slither through it. This should rub off any skin that hasn’t come off. If there are still patches of skin left on after this, don’t worry. They’ll either work their way off eventually, or come off with the next shed. The only time to worry is when skin is obstructing the cloaca, or totally encircling the snakes body where it could cut off blood flow. But patches of skin are fine to leave.

Before you do all this though, make sure your snake has finished trying to shed. It sounds like you might have caught him in the middle of shedding. As for the dryness of the shed, remember to raise the humidity to 80% next time it sheds. Humidity is the key to a successful shed. I raise the humidity to 80% as soon as my snakes eyes go a bit cloudy, and her sheds come off literally damp.

Oh, and to keep an eye on the water temperature to make sure you’re not slowly boiling your snake, you can put a digital thermometer probe in the water. The probes are meant to be out in rain, snow, ice, etc, so I’m sure a bit of water won’t harm it or the snake.

Thanks again!

 SHEDDING HELP

It depends from snake to snake I’d assume. I know when I walked in on my snake shedding, it took about 10 minutes to finish, and I walked in just as she was shedding the lower neck part. It came off all in one piece though, so it was probably faster that way. Like sliding off a sock.

 SHEDDING HELP

Ok, i dont know if this is typical, but I got up this morniong and theres no sock like shed, but flakes everywhere. I saw him going to and fro in the tank last night, knowing what he was doing, but I’m wondering why it happened like this. Am I doing something wrong? I soaked a dish towel and laid it across the top of the tank yesterday bringing the humidity level up to about 75-80%.

 SHEDDING HELP

He probably had a dry shed because you didnt raise the humidity during the blue eyed/cloudy eyed stage. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Once you get done with him shedding this bad shed off, just look forward to fixing the problem with the next shed. Just remember to keep the humidity at 55-60% during normal times, then bump it up to about 80% during shed stages.

 SHEDDING HELP

You might be able to notice the belly a bit more pinkish in color, but usually you’ll notice the cloudy blue eyes first. Unless you look at your bp’s belly often enough. Once you notice the eyes are cloudy/blue, and the skin is dull and lackluster, bump up the humidity to around 80% and keep it up until your snake sheds its skin. If you would like, you could also soak your bp in some tepid room temperature water for a few minutes after it’s eyes clear up.

The process goes like this: Pink belly > Blue eyes > Dull skin > Clear eyes > Shed. This process usually takes a week to go through. The blue eye stage usually lasts 5 days, since this stage is when the old skin and the new skin seperate. The eyes look cloudy because they fill with a liquid that seperates the old skin, which is mainly made up with keratin(same stuff our hair and nails are made from), from the new skin. The eyes will clear once the liquid has been distributed. Once the eyes are clear, the snake should shed the skin within 48 hours.

I myself look at my snakes eyes all the time when its been a while since a shed. I seem to have this internal clock that tells me when a shed is coming up, lol. Just in the last few days I’ve been noticing my snakes eyes are getting a bit cloudy...like a smoky grey color. I can still see the pupil, but its a bit hazy. This usually means she’s getting ready to go into her blue eyes stage. I wouldn’t be surprised if she starts her shed stages within the next week.
