It is a bit long and I certainly never hold my snakes that often but if the snake is eating well and is healthy I do not think you should be having alot of trouble. I am trying to think back to the days when I had one snake and how much I loved to hold her. She was (still is) an amazing eater though and I was lucky. As little as you can deal without handling him is how long you should to be honest. Sorry I am not scsnakeman but I can give you some good advice.

You should hold your snake as little as possable, it is stressfull for the snake to be held that often. That being said....I hold my bp for hours daily...it’s not good, but my bp is a great eater and very calm..so I get away with a bad habit. I also regularly hold my corn, hognose, and colombian rainbow, I have been excedingly fortunate. I will probably treat my dumerils in the same manner...it’s not the best idea, it is not best for the snake, but sofar I have not suffered the consequences of my bad habits.

Judging from the fact that you just got the snake, you’re handling it 3-4 hours a day, and it’s in such a large cage with so much open space, I’d think there’s a good chance your bp’s stressed out. One way to find out is to see if your bp takes it’s first feeding. Have you tried feeding it yet? Generally when you get a new snake, it’s best to leave it be for a week or more, so it can acclimate to its new environment and settle in. Ball pythons are pretty easy to stress out. And stress leads to a finicky eater. I guess all I’m saying is if your snake doesn’t eat when you try and feed it, you might know why.

Just my two cents.

I answered the other post and thanks for asking. I believe Eunectes advice is good. Pelota and I agree on nearly everything except cage size. I believe as long as you give the snake plenty of hides that he can barely fit into, you can put him in as large a cage as you wish. The snake does need the hides. As long as the snake isn’t stressed, handle it as much as it will allow but as soon as it get fidgety and begins to move around a lot and try to go into dark places put it back in the cage.

SC I am with you on cage size. Secure hides are the key factor.

for sure the cage size can be fine with lots of hides, it’s just a question of space, the snake will go from hide to hide, lol sometimes I think I can just to two hides with a tube...then just a question of feeding, lol.

I didn’t know we disagree on cage size. lol
I agree that you can keep a ball python in a large cage, as long as you provide lots of hiding spots and cover. I just mentioned the cage size in this particular case because it seemed a bit open when I looked at the cage pics Kevz posted in another topic. Now that I look at it though, the size and open space isn’t bad, but I’m not sure about the hides.

I keep my bp in a 2 foot by 1 foot tank. She’s exactly 28.5 inches long as of last night. I’m currently working on switching her to a 3x2 rubbermaid to stay for most of her life or until I decide to upgrade.
