I started this hobby while on vacation in florida..I came home with a ball python to replace a girlfriend and my mother told me she would not let me in the house. She hated snakes so much she said she would let my ball python go in Illinois. I currently keep ball pythons, green and yellow anacondas, amazon tree boas, and much more. She thought the 7 ft tiger retic I took home last was kind of pretty. The only was to get them to be ok with one..is to convince them to be happy you do not have over 100. They get used to it. I am a bit older now but my parents still say they will never visit if I have any cobras...but they will. My mom actually thought the last 2 anacondas I purchased were cute and she has never said that about any snake before..she just wished they stayed that small. (dream on)

 Don’t be sneaky about snakes...

Ok. Well, I come from a family of reptile loathers. I had to wait until I moved out- period. I did a stupid thing and kept a skink in secret for a few months as a teenager. My mother discovered the lizard’s food in a small hutch, and deduced the existance of the lizard. She moved him out to our garage, and he nearly died due to temperature shock, and I had to hand him off to someone immediately.

If she is willing to accompany you to a pet shop and "meet" one before permanant nixing the idea, Goddess bless you both. If she simply is herptephobic, the only thing I can recommend is get your own place. Hiding an animal which has special needs when it comes to temperature, humidity and all that is not as easy as you might think. Also, do you really want her to posiibly find it, and catch hell for it as well as possibly endanger the animal?

 Tips

Suggestion from a mom:

If you haven’t already, educate her about bp’s. BE RESPECTFUL!!(I’m sure you are) DON’T LECTURE HER OR WHINE- if you whine, etc she might think you are not mature enough to handle, what seems to her, a big thing! Let her know that it is not going to get 10ft long and even if on the rare occasion it did bite it wouldn’t be more than a pinch. Share your plan with her as to where to keep it, how you plan to keep it from escaping, etc. Discuss rules about having it out of it’s cage, etc. Perhaps even get her to ask questions on here (or some other source)for reassurance.

In the case that she simply hates snakes no matter how "safe" they are you may just have to wait till you go to college/move out. But she may choose not to visit you then! My grandfather, a big seemingly fearless guy, who hunts for bears and has done lots in his life absolutely can not stand the site of snakes. I once had a picture of my sons with their garter and he couldn’t stand it! Go figure!

When my oldest son (now 8yo) started asking for a snake I said yes but not till he was old enough to take care of it on it’s own thinking about age 12. But our cat decided to bring home a garter snake one day and my kids begged to keep it. I figured it wasn’t so bad afterall and said yes. Sadly, it died. But we now have a bp that is doing well. And I actually find snakes and other reptiles cute and fun to have now! My friends and family are in total disbelief!

I should note here that my own mother would not come to our house for a good week (my parents visit often) when we kept the garter. And she nearly flipped when we allowed our son to get a bp at a reptile show. She barely talked to me for a few days. And I’m 32 yo!

She will now (barely)tolerate it out of it’s cage and in the same room as her as long as my son keeps it away from her. She is very uptight while it’s out though. My grandfather won’t come here though!

Good Luck!

Lisa

PS: Would she be open to something smaller to start- like a garter or even a lizard? Then once she see’s it’s not so bad having a snake/reptile in the house you could introduce the idea of something bigger?

my moms been getting better, i think once shes been around it, she’ll start to like it. Yeah, my iguana was a trip. i didnt have it for long though. i won it at a carnival, I spent over $80 trying to win it! The carnie felt so bad for me he gave it to me. I had it for like 3 months but i had to move and the apartments we were going to didnt allow reptiles. i came home one day to find my mother had released it, i was so upset. that night, there was a huge storm, and i thought for sure it was dead. but a couple years later, there was a story on the news about a 3 foot iguana running around the complex!

as i said earlier, just take it home and hide it for a while and when she finds out just say" i had it for 2 months and you didnt hear it,smell it,and you thought i never got one.and if she says no,do the old fassion begging with the puppy eyes.and if that dont work, keep it hidden and get 5 boy mice and 5 girls in one tank and dont touch those mice for a couple monthes and you will be set for life. And if they over bread, just give some mice back to the pet store.during the couple monthes, buy seperate mice, dont use any of the 10.and thats just about it!good luck!!!!!!!!

my advice:buy a bigger ball python and take him/her home and hide it for 2 months.make sure to keep it x-tra clean so she dont smell it.when she finds out, say"ive had it for 2 months and you didnt smell it or hear it and its not bothering you at all.if i keeped it, there would be no difference.I promise you still wont smell it or hear it.and it still wont bother you.you might even forget i have it by the end of this month." so just say that!by my experiance,it has a 96% chance of the beautiful words"o.k. you can keep it." Just buy a book on ball pythons and read it before you buy one. you can kill your snake andnot know how.

Your advice inane, imbecilic, insipid, thoroughly ignorant, and childish. Perhaps there should be an age limit or some sort of test before people are allowed to purchase animals... like for beer or being able to drive. My jaw is on the floor along with your IQ.
Grow up.

yea seriously thats the worst advice i’ve heard. Ok well my Parents love reptile’s so i’ve never had a problem....actually it was my moms idea to get that tiny little redtail in the petshop we now call mosi....so I guess you could just do what eunectes said.
