 Phosphorus question

Ok, I know how we are supossed to have the calcium dust without vitd3 and phosphorus free....
Can someone help me with why it is supossed to be phosphorus free though?
I have heard that crickets have a high content of phosphorus and can shut down the kidneys..so was wondering what is this oxy-moran I’m having an issue with! lol! And the ratio balance of the dusting..do we really know how much we are giving them? I know the vet can draw blood and see the calcium levels..other than that..I’m confused.

Dont get me wrong though, I dust my guy the way we are supossed to but just wondering.. my guy is just fine too!

Thanks a bunch! Lauren~ Aka Sono!

 Phosphorus question

Too much phosphorus in the diet makes the calcium insoluble in which case the dragon’s body will not absorb the calcium. As the body continues to absorb the phosphorus, it abolishes (in a way) the calcium which, in turn, could cause metabolic bone disease.

 Phosphorus question

Understandable... so then why do we feed our dragons crickets as a main staple if they are loaded with phosphorus??

I feed my guy roaches just cuz thats what he likes better and it has a better meat to shell ratio..but when they arent breeding well, I get crickets. He also will not touch wax worms or silkies..so bummer!

Thanks for that explanation on that though..
Lauren~

 Phosphorus question

Hey,

You’re right. Crickets contain almost three times as much phosphorus as calcium. From what I have read, most feeder insects contain excess amounts of phosphorus.

This is why supplementing your bugs is very important.
Another important thing to do is gutload your crickets with foods that are high in calcium.

Silkworms and Hornworms are the highest in calcium because of the food they eat. The mulberry tree leaves have a lot of different minerals and vitamins, including a high amount of calcim.

The key to a healthy dragon is variety. Offer a lot of different foods and the right supplementation, and your dragon will be fine.

Thanks Edel! I appreciate the explanation!! I will try to think of better ways to entice him with the silkies and or wax worms. Any other suggestions on what to feed..he like to chase them and the worms are tooo slow! :) He eats his greens just fine though!

Keep in mind butter worms are for treats and not to be used as a staple feeder. Mine love them, but I only give them once in a while as a special treat.

Oh yeah.. Scooter loooves them. He will stuff his belly so full he looks to burst! Thats why I know he doesnt have a weight issue. But then he looses the weight and then gets like extra skinny and his skin is all wrinkly. I dont know.. I feed him his roaches and crix..dust all the time..bathe all the time and mist his basking spot so he can rub his belly in it..he loves that!! But not all the time though..for RI reasons. He is very active poops alll the time huge ones too. So, he is a healthy lil man for sure! I juat widh he’d eat worms. Oh well.. he eats his greens though! :)
