A couple of quick questions... and a funny story

Ok, It’s time for my 4 month freak out and question period :)

#1) Took my beardie to get weighed this week. After a poop, but also after eating 5 hornworms, he was 590 gms. He is about 18.5" long and 13 months old. Does that sound about right?

The trip to the vet was CRAZY. He has gone for car rides and been fine, but I forgot that that was the winter and he was inside my jacket. I had him sitting on my lap and all of a sudden he flared his beard, flattened out, hissed, and tried to run away... I ended up with lizard rash all over my arms from his spines and he ended up under the gas/brake pedals!!!!! I had some unhappy people around me as I put the 4-way flashers on and coasted to a stop, so as not to injure him with the pedals.

I finally got him settled on the centre console under my hat. I think he must have seen a bird over head and went into prey-mode. Regardless of WHY, next time I’ll throw him in a box....any box... :)

Ok....back to questions!

#2) He still doesn’t like ANYTHING green except hornworms. It’s about to make me crazy. He’ll eat fruit from my hand, readily, but won’t touch the veggie mixes I put in his cage every day. I see him taking a bite every now and again, but nothing that would actually get him the nutrients that I imagine he needs!

Pardon me....he does like greens....but they are my houseplants!!!!! I put him down for 5 seconds on the kitchen counter and he RAN and started ripping the leaves off of my wandering jew... That’s not gonna work for me, I love my plants like my pets.

I feed endive, radicchio, collard greens, dandelions as staple (one type a week and don’t have access to mustard/turnip greens) and then I pick a different thing to go with it: squash/parsnip/snow peas/green beans/(carrots for a treat). I have a hand mixer from walmart that I use to chop it up into fine bits and it sits on the floor of his enclosure. It used to be in a bowl but he wasn’t touching it so I moved it to the floor and he has responded BETTER to that, though still not well.

At 8 months he went to the vet and the vet told me to move him to protein every second day. I have been doing that ever since and he still hasn’t developed much more interest in the veggies.

I’m a worried Mom. I worry about him not getting the moisture/nutrients he needs. Am I just a freak?

#3) What about pansies? He ate one of those the other day. I know they’re on the list of edible flowers, but does it count as a veggie? Oh...he ate flower, and refused the stem and leaves. I tried to give him a couple more yesterday, and he wasn’t having it.

It’s so weird, cause I’ll feed him random pieces of fruit, and as soon as I pull out a piece of anything green he zips his lips and turns his head... ITS WORSE THAN HAVING A CHILD!!!! I don’t have a child, but I could reason with them....not so much with the dragon.

Alright, I think that’s it for this question period!!

Thanks so much guys....I tried to post a pic of him, but the server doesn’t seem to be working... :) I’ll add it to the thread at some point...

Thanks!
Diane

Diane,
Welcome to my world, only Norbert is not even a year old and been almost like this for months now, he only weighs 434, he will not eat fruits, veggies, silks, crixs, flowers, mostly nothing, yet gains weigh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Which is why I am now leaving for our very first vet visit ever, I know he does not have parasites, I work in a vet office myself and do his fecal tests myself, but we do not do reps, so off the a rep vet we go to be sure that he is ok! I will let you know what he says to me when I get back..........maybe it will give you some insight into yours, rofl...........I think they just want to drive us nuts personally! Oh this is my first beardie but I do have 2 of them, my female does at least eat some!!!!!!!!!!

LOL...I wonder why they do that!?!? My male does that too. I take him outside when it’s nice, and if he sees or hears a bird or car, he goes into "pancake mode" and blackbeards like crazy. They are so silly.

Hey,

They do that kind of stuff because in the wild, their predators come from above. So they have to watch up and be ready to take off. And they can see a lot farther than we think. Or maybe it’s their hearing. You can look up and see nothing, and all of a sudden, there it is.

Hey D,

At 13 months old I would go ahead and feed the protein every two days instead of every other day. He might realize that if he is not getting the protein that often, that he might as well start eating the green stuff. You could get a jar of baby food, maybe something sweet like butternut squash, and spread it on the greens like a dressing. See if that is a bit more tempting for him.

Once they are older they really don’t eat that much. My adult guys only eat a few bites of salad every other to every third day, even though it is offered daily, and they are fine. Just make sure you keep him hydrated and that he is not losing weight. He should be fine. And I bet he will eventually start enjoying his greens.

Thanks so much guys!! :)

I feel better now. He ate a flower again today and a few dusted butterworms. He sure does love his protein!

Edel,
I’ve actually been feeding him protein every 2 days since he was 8 months old... I guess this is just him, and I should be happy! I will try the baby food though, and see how that goes.

The other thing that I wanted to check on was shedding....he still hasn’t shed since before his vet visit at 8 months old. I’m not stressed about it really... I give him a 15-20 minute soak once a week. He has shed the skin around his lips a couple of times and his front feet a couple of times, but not the rest of the body. I would dearly love to see what his true adult colour is going to be! :)

Thanks!
Diane
