A sick BD getting better but... Hi all, just looking around a bit on the site and wanted to try this on the health forum too. some of you know the story but here it is again.I have a F juvenile BD. she is a rescue. she has been doing fine but on wednesday my son called and said something was wrong. i took her to the vet that night and she is doing good now but I am so curious to find out what the heck was going on. her syptoms were... black beard (really black) rolling like crocs do that death role thing. her vent was open. her head cocked to one side like looking up. she wasn’t eating very well the few days before but other than that nothing unusual. the vet said she was dizzy and could be either ear infection or nerological disorder. the herp vet was out so we went to a vet who although didn’t specialize in herps she had some knowledge. she put her on antibiotics and probiotics and said just make her comfy and try to get her to eat. well within 5 hours she was noticably better. no black beard and no rolling. next day she started eating again and today she is nearly back to eating her usual. I know I have all the right tank set up and her diet is right. this is a mystery to me and lots of others so I thought just ask maybe someone had a idea.
thanks for any ideas guys

A sick BD getting better but... Does your calcium have D3 in it? How often are you dusting with it?

A sick BD getting better but... yes it does and I dust a few times a week. she is doing even better today. but that theory won’t hold water because I have been doing the same for months and this is the first and I hope the only time that happens. I would really like to know what caused this and then if possible I could prevent it you know. I gotta wonder although the vet says no if she could have gotten a bit of say pesticide off the greens although I wash them before I give them to her. Just wondering so if you hear of anything give me a holler. Thanks for all your help and I too am praying for your friends and the family.

A sick BD getting better but... The D/3 builds up in their system and after time can cause problems. It doesn’t happen right away, it does take a while. I have dealt with the D/3 issue in baby dragons that I had years ago. If it weren’t for the vet telling me about the D/3, I would never have know what the problem was. Everyone thought that it was neurological. I quit using the D/3 for a couple of weeks and they all got better. I did end up losing a few, but after cutting way back on using it, the rest did fine. Once a week is plenty for most dragons and you have to be careful, because most vitamins have D/3 as well.

A sick BD getting better but... oh wow. so i will cut down to once a week then. If she is eating things she is supposed to eat then would you even need to do the extra like dusting and supplements? I feed her very well. I bet she eats better than I do!!! LOL I go to the store and I know I spend 40 plus every few weeks. Not to mention the extras like the crix and the occasional fruits. She went from 10 in to 16 in in less than 3 full months. I would like to say what her weight went from but she wasn’t weighed regular. I know she has tripled in size though. She seems to be doing great. Her apppetite is nearly normal and she is alert and stuff. Her poo looks like usual all that normal before stuff is back to normal. I just wish I knew what the heck happened. Thanks guys for all your help

A sick BD getting better but... Deb,
You need to dust with pure calcium, no D3, two times a week. Dust with vitamins, which contain the D3, only once a week.
These guys produce the D3 in their bodies with the help of the sun’s rays, in our case the UVBs. If given too much it becomes toxic to their bodies, causing symptoms like you stated. I would definitely cut down to once a week on the vitamins with the D3.
I think all our dragons eat better than we do. lol
Glad she’s doing better.
