Ot: All of you who has done the PamEdel Condo

I’m a clueless person but I REALLY WANT TO HAVE IT DONE!! I NEED TO HAVE ONE BUILT! LOL Rayna has been real helpful but my brother and his cousin in law says it be a great help if they knew exactly what it is that they need to get and ask for and where they get it and all that juicy stuff. They also would appreciate all those all have done it(even if it’s half done) post pics of it and each one that has done it to explain HER version as how she did it and how long it took her. I told them that it was a female who made it and females who are now doing it but I have no tools so Im one of those helpless ones...LOL
Please Please help me! I would really love to get this project started and done before June, I want to make my kids small old room into my own personal paradise for repitles, so I’d greatly appreciate it. NO Trish don’t post yours I showed them yours and they were like oh h*ll no! They willing to try the PamEdel condo
Thanks in advance!

Sandy

FRAME: steel garage-type shelf. It comes with the shelves, all the ceilings and floors are melamine covered particle board, the back is plywood, and the ends are pegboard, one side has like a laminate stuff over it, and they other side is just bare.

Put the shelf together. Then drill holes through the metal frame, big enough for the bolts you chose to fit through, two on each side of each corner, of each section, one higher and one lower.

WALLS: Once it is put together, measured each section’s ends, and back. Cut the four pieces of plywood for the backs, (3/8 inch a/c plywood) and measure all 8 of the ends, and cut those out of pegboard. Put two coats of sealer on both sides of each piece and all edges. (It’s water based, non fumey and non toxic...comes in a turquoise colored can, and it only comes in quarts, it’s by the deck stain at the home improvement stores.) Fit each piece where drilled holes to line up with the holes. Put the bolts through from the inside and put the nuts on the outside, so the ends of the screws won’t be inside the enclosures where the beardies could scrape themselves on them.

LIGHTS: Drill holes through the back wall of each section, to put the wires through for the light fixtures. All the lights come out the back, and are plugged into a surge protector/power strip.

FRONT DOORS: For the front doors use the quarter round nailed on the bottom and top, leaving a space between the two so you can slide the plexiglass.

FINISHING: Clear water based non-silicone tub and tile caulk, and put a bead of it all the way around every crack inside the cage, tile floors, and furniture, let it dry for like 48 hours.

Ohhh how can any man follow these instructions ....LOL...

I see screen instead of peg board (masonite)... and It looks good ....is that Hardware cloth ?

I think you did a good job .... you will need drill and bits ... screw drivers... pliers and / or wrenches ...small hammer to nail 1/4 ...3/8ths round.....

Ohh and s hooks and chain for some of the overhead fixtures. The 4’ fixtures at Home Depot are 8.97
T-12 bulb fits em perfect ( the fattest Repti Sun 10.0)
Need more details ...I can write a book ... and help lots ... we can exchange phone # ’s via PM ... and have a 3 way with Edel ....

Cmon , lets get em built !!!

instead of plywood/press bored i suggest using OSB bored. its already sealed and doesnt absorb water. it looks like large chunks of wood pressed together. comes 8x12 and you can have home depo cut it down for you. no need to seal it. :)

osb bored is about 6$ per piece of 8x12 feet. plexi glass can be cut at lowes.

Thanks Edel. question: would it be ok to have the peg board all done in the back and have the sides closed in w/o any screen on the sides? Like would the dragons be ok w/o the screens since the whole back has holes from the peg board?
Thanks

I am familiar with the 4 x 8 sheets as plywood comes ... but I have never seen the 8x 12... and certainly not at the price you mention ... you are incorrect and I suggest you check 2x before giving that info.

It is sealed on one side only... and is resistant ... not proof. 4x8 sheets are 6.97 ... possibly higher or lower as the economy is sliding all over the place.... 2 thicknesses are available ... one of which is a dollar more per sheet.... 7/16ths...and 15/ 32nds.

Still a good deal compared to plywood ... not a bad choice ... good call RX7

Hey Sandy, here’s a link that tells you about the osb board......you can buy plywood for about $11.44 a sheet, 15/32nds 3 ply plywood.....osb will run you about 7.97 for the same size.

osb board

Hey ddrraaggoonn, here’s a pic of the condo - of course, now he has a hide and the two bottom condos are occupied as well.

I’m just a little lost cuz around my way homedepot knows squat they aren’t as helpful as tv shows them and a good portion of the time they won’t cut(just boards they do) but yeah I’m gonna see and find someone to help me, so teh more that anyone here knows about how I can go about doing the PamEdel condo I’mm all eyes!

The plexi glass doors ... slide past one another .... the plexi is so clear and new ...you can’t tell..... but there are 2 pieces cut to overlap an 1" or 2 in the center when the doors are closed ....

They are held in place by the 3/8ths base shoe / quarter round at the bottom .... and have just enough gap touching the back side of the plexi to allow for the BYPASS... therein lies the term bypass doors.Simple and effective and very in expensive .... except for the plexi

No...LOL. In fact I just sent You an email and that`s what I was talking about. You can make all 3 sides pegboard since the holes allow for plenty of ventilation. Rayna :-)

Sandy, My son and I built it in the course of two days. It took a day to seal the wood and let it dry completely. Then we put it together. Not hard to do at all, once the wood is cut to size.

Actually you can paint it or what I plan on doing is buying moulding to stain and glue it to the frame. It would give it an all wood look.

I left it natural and just sealed it to prevent anything from sinking in or stinking up the wood. LOL If I make another one, I may try staining it first and then sealing, but it does take a few days longer to insure the wood is dry before you seal it. I was in a hurry to get it built and needed the condo done. Like I said it took 2 days from buying it, cutting wood, sealing wood, and putting it all together. I also waited 24 hours before putting the dragons in it, after the tile was laid. I wanted to make sure it was thoroughly dried and clean. I couldn’t take any chances with my babies! LOL

Are you talking about pegboard on the sides? That’s the first condo we built, and Edel has it now. It’s solid on the back, like Charlie’s, and has pegboard on both of the ends. The sides are attached the same as the the back, with holes drilled through the metal frame and through the pegboard, each piece is cut to fit. Edel may have some good pics of it, if not, I can dig around in my old photos and see if I have any.

maybe you’re talking about Rayna’s she has peg board on the back and side, maybe she’ll pass by here and post it because you are seeing all that has this condo, Lisa has one but it’s just missing the front part and Rayna. You can see the "holes"that you looking for on this thread:

thank you for the link!

I have a few questions

1. Can you put the metal vent on the sides like in a melamine enclosure?

2. Can you put a porcelin fixture mounted on top instead of a light fixture?

3. I wanna use glass for the doors, is that possible?

Ot: All of you who has done the PamEdel Condo

1. yes.

2. I’ve done that, I prefer to have them stationary, Edel likes them moveable.

3. Yes, but I had a really hard time trying to locate the hardware (the runner track and whatnot) necessary to mount them properly, and when I did find them, they were pretty darned expensive. And to be totally safe, you would need tempered glass, (like they use on cars, it shatters but stays together....more expensive than plain old glass) so if it gets broken, it won’t explode all over everywhere. People say plexiglass is expensive, but for us, it was definitely the cheaper option. Maybe glass is less expensive somewhere else? I even considered buying prehung full windows and building the condo around it, but didn’t go too far with that idea.

And just a little input on the pegboard, that I never thought about until it was a problem....lol......I used to feed in my tanks...when I put them in the condo, the bugs ran all over hell and gone, and I had crickets all over everywhere, cuz they ran right out the little peg holes. I had to force my beardies to eat in a tote and they took a loooooong time to adjust to doing it. But if you already feed outside the tank, then no worries. :)

Pam
