 OT Basilisk enclosure--comments?

So this was my throw together enclosure for the Basilisk. The owner took it to the vet today (probably to justify the rehoming fee) and it shockingly had a negative fecal but has a bacterial infection on its head, so the vet is keeping it overnight and we’ll see how it goes.

Anyway, since I have a few more days to wait for my check to pay for the lizard, I splurged a bit on the enclosure : )

I got a 10 gallon tank (frustrating that I have about a dozen that don’t hold water lol) and a water fall with a built in filter to keep the water clean (and so the substrate doesn’t clog the pump). I also got some more plants, but dang those are expensive so I’m going to see if I can find cheaper ones elsewhere...

I had some reptile branches which I’m using, but I probably need more, and I definitely need more substrate.

I have a Reptiglo 8 (I found one that I bought new and never used) 36" bulb and the temps are about 92 in the warmest spot, so I need to raise them a bit. I’ve read you can use under tank heaters for these guys, is that true?

I also couldn’t find a screen top for a 75 gal, do you think I need one? I can probably just use hardware cloth if necessary...

I know there’s a Basilisk forum but it looks pretty slow...

Does the previous owner (from craigslist) still think tanks should be all water? I can’t believe she was subjecting the basilisk to that.

Nice! I sent her the pictures, Im sure she will be stoked. I told her this is temporary. Im sure she will be impressed. This is 100 times better than what he was in before. Maybe instead of finding a screen top... you can get a roll of screen mesh from home depot (like $8), and wood poles (like 2"x2" maybe) and make a screen extension to sit on top to make it taller. Maybe I can help you with it if you want. That looks awesome though... better than I could have imagined. Can’t wait to pick the little guy up.

No. When I (actually very politely) explained that the set up should be different she was very offended. Lance had the magic touch and she did listen to him and said she felt horrible for keeping him in the wrong environment for so long. He also has a bacterial infection on his head which she is taking care of herself and took him to the vet today.

It sounds like she has learned a lot through this ordeal. I hope he likes his temporary home here : )

I think if Lance takes him I might be ready for a CWD, I’ve always wanted one : )

Haha, the trick was to say ("no offense at all, sorry if it comes off that way"), after everything I said she was doing wrong lol. I had to go a about it very carefully. I also had to assure her that its very common that people get reptiles just listen to the pet store instead of researching themselves. The trick was to make it seem like it was the pet stores fault for giving her the wrong info, and not hers at all lol... which we all know is no excuse, but hey.

Oh, and she also has some chameleons she needs to get rid of too. It would be interesting to see how they are kept (probably together...). I honestly have NO idea how this basilisk is still alive being kept in a tank full of water with only a small branch of dry land for its entire life! I guess that just goes to show how resilient some reptiles really are!

Im really surprised she took him to the vet willingly, I didn’t even ask her to. I just said I would need to. I guess, good thing she is doing it lol! Hopefully she doesn’t raise the price up to cover medical bills... If I were her, I would just give it away, especially knowing its going to a good home.

Yeah. You should find out about the chameleons. Are they Veiled? That’s a reptile I actually have some experience with, lol. They really don’t do well in pairs, especially as adults...

If she wants to give them away, take them : P I have a couple of screen cages at the rescue I could borrow.

Haha I’m such a sucker for Chameleons, they’re so awesome looking!

I have no idea, I just remember her saying she has a few she needs to get rid of. I can tell her I have a friend who has tons of chameleons and would take them if she couldn’t find a home for them. Ill ask her about them next time I talk to her.

Wow, that’s really cool!
I think it would be awesome to have rocks at the bottom of the 10 gallon... For traction also, if he decides to get in.

Hey Sandy,
The Basilisk was taken to the vet by his previous owner and is still there, as far as I know, being treated for a bacterial infection on his head. Hopefully Lance can pick him up today, I’ve got to get more cash! Lol.
