Sunday, we had a celebration for my mother-in-law’s 90th birthday. I stopped at the North aurora Petco for some crickets on the way home. what I found there was appalling. There was a tank with around eight very small emaciated baby beardies huddled together on the floor of the tank. I mean you could see their bones they were so skinny. they were not active at all. One larger beardie-maybe two months older was sitting by himself on a rock. there was a food bowl and in it were three large chunks of raw carrot. Even my thirteen year old son was upset. Today when I was in the Petco nearer my home, I asked them for a contact number to report such horrendous conditions. which the manager gave me and said once a report is made someone is sent to the store within 24 hours to check out and rectify the situation. I supposed I could have said something to the people at the store, but something told me that they wouldn’t care or they would have found out how to take care of their animals more appropriately. So I made the call, reported the situation and I will pray those babies are given some appropriate food. I disagree when I go to the two major pet stores near my house to a bowl full of meal worms or pellets. but the babies in the Petco and Petsmart near my house were small, but rounded and active so apparently they were eating. so I just wanted others to know that there is a number to call and report conditions in Petco Stores.

I don’t know what I would have done if I saw that!!! I would probably have found the manager and made them do something on the spot!! I will remember that they have a call number in the future if I ever see something like that!!!

I suppose i could have done that, but I suspected a bigger problem and didn’t want the store to know I would be reporting them for the future of all the pets. they were not friendly and I was in a hurry to try another store to find crickets for Esther and it was like 640PM on a Sunday and all the other stores would close at 7PM. All this store had were very small crickets which Esther will not waste her time chasing and huge, winged crickets which were too big.
The number to report a problem to is 1-888-8240-7257 Mon-Friday 5AM-7PM PT and Sat/Sun-8AM-5PM PT. I did have to give my P.A.L.S. card number so I hope I get an e-mail with what will be corrected.

Keep us posted, please! I work at one of those stores.....and out beardies are active and healthy! It’s horrible what a "PET" store will do to the pets! I’m soooo happy you called! I would have done the same thing, even it was my own store!

I don’t think I would be willing to let up to be honest. These poor little guys need someone to stand up for them!
We are supposed to be a little tougher on the Pet Chains up here than in the U.S. (I am not sure why this is..) Now if they would just start getting tougher on those darn Puppy Mills!!

The manager who originally gave me the phone number said that they have to respond to reports and make changes. I guess i could drive to N.Aurora, IL and check on them or just trust that they took care of it.

i live in batavia in needed i can go over there and check if you are to far just let me know it is the next town over, i also get upset when i go to those stores but the petco in batavia is not as bad, thier only problem is as far as i can see is that they use sand for the babies but the last time they used carpet , but i did give the lady who takes care of them this site and the other beardie site so hopefully they can get on track.

ok so today is oct. 16 and i just got back from there, i went with my neighbor and when we first pulled in we saw 2 employees standing right out front smoking name tags said(JENNY, LESLIE) how wonderful was that. we went right back to the beardies and the first thing i noticed was there were 3 babies on top in a cage and below them in another were 2 a little larger. the temp reading was a little below 85 degrees,and in both cages they has a small plastic tank the ones the use for betas filled with the green wet moss stuff, and both of their food dishes had LARGE pieces of lettuce looking stuff to big eve for my guy who is 16 inches long, both cages had sand in them but the bottom one it looked more like bigger sand pieces, i did get 2 pictures of the cages but i do not know if i can post them here? , also one of the babies had poop stuch to him back left leg and if was dries on. the babies did not look to bad but you copuld tell they were hungry cause there was a guy there feeding them pinheads but there were not enough crickets to go around for the babies at least i did not see him feed the ones on the bottom. ok so that i what i saw if you want to see thepics let me know and do you know the number to call so i can complain also. jessica

ok anyway here are the pics that i took with my camera phone, on top the blue lid thing is the moss container i was talking about, on bottom the baay in front has the poop on the leg, also notice the lack of mealworms in the orangs dish
can u see how big the veggie pieces are

Pretty darn pathetic. Poor lil guys... I wish I could go on a rampage with you, but I live 1,000 milles away. You have to do the best you can. That is all you can do. HOWEVER, on the plus side, I am pleased that they are not feeding mealworms as they are not good for Beardies due to their hard outer layer of skin (for lack of a better word at the moment) Mealies are difficult for Beardies tummies to digest properly. Keep the faith! Joan2

if you notice the red ceramic dish it did have mealworms in it there is one crawling of the the right side of the pic. anyway sorry if i sounded mean but i am not just fustrated.

You won’t win in the meal worm fight-every pet store I have been in has a dish of meal worms. Now the Downers Grove store has the babies on paper towels and feeds crickets twice a day and also give lettuce and meal worms. I don’t know what the temps are, but they look chubby and healthy. However, this is the manager I worked with to report the N. Aurora store. although I applaud all efforts, I think it is important to remember that no pet store is going to keep their pets like a true beardie owner would. It is a matter of money. However, I would expect the substrate to be paper towels(which would be easier to keep clean), crickets twice daily, some type of salad and the proper temps. These are the very basic/bottom line requirements.

ok so i called them and after spending 11 minutes on hold, i finally talked to a person and told her everything that i saw i even left a number for the store manager to call me back so we will see what happen and i will keep you posted.

Sounds great. In those pictures, the babies don’t appear as emaciated as the huddle i originally saw. which makes me wonder how many of that pile survived since I doubt they sold 10 beardies since i was in that store. thanks for following up and keep me posted.
