What do you feed your beardie?
just a recap of who i am, i am a new beardie owner who just received a 7 year old male beardie named Marley (Mars for short) right now marley is on a diet of crickets (gutloaded) and veggies like collard greens and arugula (with a blueberries as a treat once in a while) he generally eats around 20 crickets a day, is that healthy for them? how many does yours eat on average? and another quick question, could superworms be used as a healthy staple? are they worth the price over crickets? if i do get super worms, how many should be fed to him at once? hoping everyone is having a great weekend! :) |

An adult should eat bugs only two to three times a week, all the bugs he can eat in 15 to 20 minutes. too much protein at that age can hurt his kidneys and liver in the long run. Now, depending on how much he can eat at one sitting. If he can eat 60 cricket in that 15 to 20 minute period? twice that much is 120....I don’t see why 20 crickets a day should hurt. In fact, I’ve been wondering lately if smaller portions more often may not be a bit easier on their little bodies. A question for my vet....hmmmm We have some that will eat 60+ at one sitting if we let them. lol We stopped the crickets and went to roaches. Much better for them and the dragons love them. We feed Discoids and they fill the dragon a lot faster than the crickets do. Super worms are a lot higher in phosphorus and they should only be fed as a treat. When we feed super worms, we don’t feed any other protein that month. Each dragon gets 10 to 15 supers every other week. A salad is offered daily and we do have some that will eat an entire bowl a day and some will only eat a portion. Hope this helps. Edel |

Could the supers be what is making Puff so fat???? You saw how fat she is getting and I feed them both 3 every day! Today I did not give them any, Norbet is not fat at all but she is, I have felt her tummy and don’t feel anything abnormal there and she poops every day, eats other stufff fine but remember I told you she is sleeping more during the day........could it be the supers? Getting a bit worried here about her weight. Trish |

It could be the supers. It could be that Puff is just gonna be a plus size beauty. :) I would cut down to three to five supers every three days. Edel |

Probably not the best way, but Dojo sometimes takes some serious coaxing to eat his veggies.... Take care, Anthony |

There are baby foods out there that do not contain sugars. Lettuce is ok as long as it is not the only green given. I mix lettuces with mustards and collards, endive and escarole all the time. As long as your dragon is getting the good greens, it’s ok to feed the lettuces every once in a while. Edel |

the key is too balance the diet with more calcium rich foods....that way the super worms won’t negatively affect the dragon. If you feed calcium rich greens daily a few super worms per week won’t do any harm. but if that is reversed and all you feed is super worms daily and very few greens you are going to have trouble soon. The minimum calcium to phosphorous ratio is 1.5 to 1 ...or Ca1.5:1P we don’t usually do the math part but if you wanted to you could...many studies in equine (horse) show the diet for specialty breeds and race horses based on the weight of the food intake. The calcium intake is the same 1.5:1 for the best over all health There are charts on insect selling websites that list the Ca and P for super worms and other insects such as crickets. So it is possible to calculate a very specific intake....but I just prefer to double up on greens / salads and keep the worms and crickets to a moderate level. |

She use to eat alot of supers but then she got lizard love handles so I switched her to crix, then dubia. She LOVES the dubia! You can get ’em relatively cheap if you buy in bulk. They breed pretty fast (I have my old heat pad under their crate from when Don was itsy bitsy) My Tegu loves em too :D |

Not all insects are equally recommended as feeders, however. The mealworm, a popular feeder insect for other kinds of reptiles, has a hard chitin exoskeleton which makes it difficult for dragons to digest. It is also relatively low in nutrients. Waxworms and superworms can be given as occasional treats, but should be fed sparingly as they are extremely fatty. They are best used as food for undernourished or gravid bearded dragons. The size of the insect being fed must also be taken into account. The general rule of thumb is that the food being provided must not be larger than the space between the animal’s eyes; feeding anything larger could lead to fatal impaction. Roaches are becoming a popular feeder for bearded dragons. Dragons enjoy many types of leafy green vegetables, including: collard greens, spring greens, escarole, turnip greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens, parsley, and carrot tops. It is also recommended that this portion of the animal’s diet be supplemented with a variety of finely diced fruits and vegetables. Feeding a mixture of these plants ensures a wider variety of nutrients, and variations in texture to aid digestion. Other greens or vegetables and fruit that an animal may eat include grapes, strawberries, raspberries, papayas, melons, apples, peaches, pears, orange-fleshed squashes, mangoes, pattypan squash, pumpkins, green beans, peas, maize (corn), carrots or their tops, beetroot, nasturtium, alfalfa (lucerne), celery, rosemary, oregano, basil, hibiscus, pansies, carnations and rose petals.
