 My beardies skin

Hi, this is Josh. I am posting 2 pics and if someone can tell me what’s going on with my girls skin I would appreciate it. There is 2 pics with 2 toned skin and 1 with her regular skin. I just took the close ups today. I hope you can see them. Edel, the vet still hasn’t said anything about the scales coming off he is just worried about the fatty deposits that are probably making her breathing labored. It doesn’t look like a shed. She is tearing her horn worms up though. Giving her calcium liquid that I purchased from the vet. Still repti-sun 10.0 purchased 2 weeks ago. Lay box has sand and dirt. She doesn’t like it. Thank you

Josh

Josh,

Can you get another vet? :/

Is she going to the bathroom? Bowel obstruction could cause all that bloating. Could she have eaten anything that might have blocked her?

Did the vet check her for parasites? This can cause bloating. Are horn worms the only thing she is eating? Are you still bathing her every other day?

Did she start gasping for breath before or after the bloating? It was after that first time you took her to the vet, wasn’t it?

The skin coloration that is coming in.....IDK I want to think that it is pretty normal. When I get home I will look at some of my guys. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen that in some of our guys.

Hi Edel, thanks! She has always been fat and the vet said it was because I gave her too many wax worms. I have to let him do a fecal. She poops everyday. She had pin worms and I gave her pancur. horn worms are all that she is getting now because that’s all I have. She won’t touch a meal worm. That’s why he gave me the milk thistle to get rid of the fatty pads. There is only one more vet and I think they are friends. They aren’t really beardie vets. She is shedding on her face so maybe it is a shed on her back. She looked at me this morning and skin was all hanging by her eyes. She looked at me like what the heck? She won’t eat her salad or veggies either. I put her in the lay box tonite. She stayed in there for a couple of hours and I took her out because she was getting too cold. How do you keep your lay box warm? The gasping just started a couple of weeks ago and that’s when he did the ultrasound and said he saw follicles. her calcium is really high so he said she was in the process of making eggs. He gave me extra strong vet liquid calcium drops and he called me today. he said she should have layed by now. IDK either! Gonna look for somebody else tomorow. Thanks@

Josh,

So for her to lose some weight, just don’t feed her so many horn worms. She doesn’t need to take that oil to melt them. How many horns are you feeding her a day? I would say stop the bugs for a couple of days and just offer salad and see what she does.

Is she bigger than normal in these pictures?

If she needs to lay she will lay whether she has a lay box or not. However, if you have the lay box, you can keep it warm by placing a heat lamp with a clamp on the tub you’re using for a lay box. You can cut the lid of the tub in half and place the light tilted so it heats the mound of dirt.

I really think you need a fecal done....however, if she is just chubby, that can be fixed by slowing down on the protein. As far as the trying to catch her breath....IDK if a the weight would have anything to do with that. At least not while she is just vegging. lol

That is one fat beardie! She needs to eat veggies and take away the worms completely for a while, they are a treat not a meal! Like feeding a kid solely on candy, they would get huge and struggle to breathe too! And for the skin, looks like shes gonna shed, can give her a bath to help it along, my beardie loved taking baths!

Hello this is Josh. Thanks Mschip and Edel! I stopped the waxworms a long time ago. She won’t even eat a worm that little anymore. She looks at me like I’m crazy and she just walks over them. I give her 2 big hornworms a day. Now i’m a little confused because I thought the waxworms and not the hornworms are the candy worms. Anyway, my Mom just purchased silkworms too little to eat now but they will grow. She IS shedding!!! Oh, so much of her is all over the place. She is shedding from head to toe!! She is a little smaller than above. Ok, I took a pic. Here it is.

An adult bearded dragons diet should mainly consist of green leafy vegetables only getting feeder insects once or twice a week, I gave mine crickets since some of the worms out there like kingworms are really hard to digest because of there hard shell and made my beardie sick. I also occasionally gave her a pinky mouse as a treat which is really good for them unless they are overweight. It just sounds like you are feeding too many insects which she doesnt need since she is done growing, and good thing you stopped the waxworms because they are super high in fat, dont know much about the hornworms. Hope this helps!

Josh,

How is her breathing? The horn worms are good enough to be staple bugs, but since they are so expensive, most people just use them as treats. They are as good as silk worms. Super worms are quite fattening, so stay away from those. And do NOT feed a pinky.

Is she eating any salad at all for you? Josh, only feed her bugs every third day. I know that’s gonna be hard, but it will help her. Do offer a salad every day....she will eventually take it if she is not eating it now.

Keep us posted.

Edel

Thanks for responses. She won’t touch a salad or veggies since she has come out of her brumation. She lost some weight from brumating but not the fatty pads along the side. I will give her the worms like you say, but the days I don’t give her any, she won’t eat. I left a nice salad in there and she didn’t eat it. After two days my Mom threw it out wondering if I was tryinmg to grow fungus. Her breathing is better. The vet doesn’t understand since he did the ultrasound and saw the follicles. Maybe she reabsorbed them again? I’m going to have to take my paper route money and take her back to the vet so he can let me know what’s going on. I know you said if she has to lay she will even without a laybox but I’m so scared of the egg binding thing. I’ll let you know. Thanks everybody! She looks like she is getting better but she sounds like sand paper so I bath her twice a day to get that skin off her.

Josh

No Pinkies Josh....Especially right now. It’s too much protein all at once. Once she loses a little weight, you can do one as a treat every once in a while.

If you fed a pinkie, well ok, but no more. ;)

It’s ok if she won’t eat those couple days.....for now she might refuse, but eventually she will start eating the veggies. Now, remember, once they are adult they don’t eat as much. Our Androth eats a bite or two of salad every other day, even though it is offered daily...he usually likes to walk through it and make a mess. LOL

If she has to lay them, she will. Now, if you see her trying to lay and is straining but the egg is not coming out, then worry about egg binding. Otherwise, if she is not straining, she is not laying. When she gets ready to lay, she will get restless and start digging....run back and forth in the tank.....then she’ll lay down, will lift her tail and wiggle her bottom back and forth; then you’ll see the egg.

That’s so weird. My vet told me pinkies are good for beardies once a week, based on their phosphorus/calcium ratio. Then again D.J lost weight so maybe that’s why.

Josh,
I had to try different kinds of salad with Queen Esther. For a while she liked the Spring Mix. Then she stopped eating that and she likes the mixed greens. My point is that some beardies are particular as to what types of salad they eat and others are not. Just stay away from anything that says lettuce. My beardie likes peas and squash and strawberries. I think the trick is trying a variety of fruits and veges and the timing of them is important too. I try and put her salad in the tank early, so that once she heats up she will eat it. If I put it in the tank in the afternoon, it is already too late. Also, I don’t leave mine in once she goes to sleep at night. They really get gross and I wouldn’t eat it either. Hope this helps.
Janice

thanks everyone! I never gave her pinkies Edel. She was eating bok choy. I will try the combinations that you guys say. She looks like her stomach is contracting that what my mom says. and then she beards like she is in pain. her vet gave me some pain med for her but I wont give it to her because he says it will make her drowsing and I’m not trying to do that. I hope it’s not egg binding. next week i can take her back and let the vet check her again. If she has too much calcuim in her blood the vet says she is trying to make egss but this was last month and no eggs yet. Thanks again everyone. I’ll let you know if she lays. They are going to be infertile anyway so I don’t see why she is so choosey about my laybox

Josh
