 Any advise?

Hello, I got a bearded dragon for free from someone on craigslist back in january. I feed him crickets in the morning, greens in the evening and more crickets at night. I also dust the crickets everytime i feed them to him. I have him in a 30 gallon long with a little platform on the top. Most bearded dragons are active right?? well mine just site on the steps to the platform all day. Sometimes he will scratch his cage trying to get out. He does eat, and he poops about twice a week. What would make him just lay around and not be active? I have him under a 100 w light bulb and u uvb light. I am in the process of building him a cage 4ft long by 2ft wide. When i put him in the new cage will he be more active? What should i do?

How big is this Bearded Dragon? Normally adults, you should only feed him crickets 2-3 times a week and greens & veggies daily(BeautifulDragons.com is a good site)....are his bowel movements regular(mushy, solid, etc)? Has he seen a vet and had a fecal done since you got him? Does he run around and act like he’s crazy when you put him on the floor or does he just sit there like he does in his tank? What substrate do you use? what are the temps in the cage on the hot and cool sides? A lot, I know :)

He is about 13 inches. What are his bowel movements? Sorry I’m only 14.. no he has not been to the vet yet. When i get him out, he usually just sits on my chest and falls asleep. I have the zilla desert blend substrate in his cage. Also, i got him, i dont think they used a uvb light because his jaw was starting to grow crooked and his toes were floppy. We’ve had him under a uvb light since we got him and it looks like his toes are gettin stronger and his mouth is not as crooked.

Thanks for the help!(:
Dakota

If I were you, I would get a vet appt for him as soon as you possibly can. Do you feed him on the sand? Sand can cause impactions in beardies who "accidently" eat it. My spikey is now 10inches and I use repti-carpet, but many people on here use unprinted(white) paper towels or newpapers or tiles.
Bowel Movements= Pooping :)
But considering he was not under a UVB light for obviously quite a while and there was some apparent development issues due to the poor care he was given in the beginning, I would DEFINITELY get him a vet appointment. You need to make sure he has no diseases, no parasites, that he does not have any signs of any MBD (Metabolic Bone Disease) which is very serious in beardies especially young ones who have not had very good care.
Evelyn.

I will talk to my mom and see if we can take him to the vet when we take our cats. The crickets i put on the sand but the greens i put on his platform, which is carpet. Since ive had him his bowel movements have been solid, but the last couple of times, it has been a little runny. When we went and got him, she said they have had him since he was little. They said they had him for about 9 months and im guessing they never used a UVB light because she only gave us the heat light.

Hi,

He is a Cutie!!! He looks like he is in a bad shed. Get him in a bath, water not too cold and not hot, just luke warm. He should be getting a bath at least once a week but more often when shedding.

If he is an adult, he is acting quite normal actually. Yes, a vet visit is a good thing, but he sounds quite normal to me. Pooping twice a week is fine; we have one that will poop once a week and sometimes once every two weeks.

I would work on getting him into a bigger tank. a 30 gallon is mostly more tall than wide...a beardie needs a bit more floor room. the minimum tank size should be a 40 breeder (36x18x18).

They are lazy critters. LOL

What kind of calcium are you using to dust his crickets with? Make sure it has no D3 on it. I bet he would love some outside time, either with a leash or you just holding him, and getting some real sun.

Edel

Thanks Edel(: If he is in a bad shed, is that why i keep find pieces of his skin in his cage? I dont know if it is a 30 gallon, i think it is. But the tank is actually longer than wider. I use Fluker’s calcium, says with vitamin d3. Here are somemore pics.
This one is what he does all day long!

This is his cage for right now.. I am in the process of building him another one which will be 2 ft wide and 5 ft long.

This is the calcium i use on the crickets.

Oh yeah, look at the second pic.. you see the fence? Well that is my homemade fence to keep him from jumping off... which dont really work!! one day i was at dads and when i came home my stepdad said he found him under my bed. So i dont know how he survived a close to 5ft drop and not hurt himself!!
