My New Baby Beardie named Draken

Hello all, I’m new here, but not new on the Water Dragon and Green Basilisk forum because I have those 2 lizards now, but today I got the CUTEST, MOST ADORABLE baby Beardie, and I named him Draken, Drake for short. Drake isn’t skittish and has quite a personality so far. His setup is simple but it will look better later on. Drake’s viv is on my dresser and is a 20 gal and its really big enough for him now, Merlin and Emeralds is across the room but I’ve seen Merlin looking at him sooo funny like "hey, what are you doing here this is my domain" its sooo funny. I hope to get some pics later on when my camera is fixed

Lorrie, Merlin (CWD), Emerald (GB), and Draken (BD)

....I just found out that you aren’t supposed to use sand, does that mean calcium sand too, but I thought it was recommended, and its says it is easy to digest and won’t cause impaction on the bag. I already have it in there....what do I do? Will he really die if he eats to much sand because I did see him eating it.

Its All natureal Reptilite Calcium Substrate
says 100% Edible and Easily Digestible, and its teh most soluble calcium carbonate available. Allows reptiles to easily ingest necessary calcium for proper bone development. I read that off the bag, and it sounds like the lizard is supposed to eat it...
Its says its both Silica and phosphate free, and contains Strontium, Magnesium, and Potassium, and has low impact. So it sounds safe to me.

Please take your new baby off of the sand. Over time, it may cause impaction and possible death. It is especially bad for baby beardies and since you witnessed him eating it, please remove it ASAP. Pet stores and companies will lie to you saying the sand is fine for them just to make a sale. Some good substrates are newspaper, paper towels, shelf lines, and wheat bran when your baby gets a bit older.

I agree with Kelly 100%! PLease get rid of this and just use white paper towels or one of the other safe substrates suggested to you by KAS. Also, be prepared for a lot of heated reactions, everyone here is strongly against the use of sand!

absolutley sure. one member spent 60 dollars on sand and then dumped it all in their back feild. and calcium is sand is by far the worst because as it is digested it gums up and starts to clog their systems. not a pretty site. so please take it out. fill a vase or something with it. or if you have kids or something make a craft out of it but please don’t keep drake on it. and reptile carpet is another good substrate.

I mean when they are out in the wild they are SURROUNDED by sand aren’t they, and I’ve seen many pictures of baby beardies in sand substrate in some of my books...I don’t understand....

It sucks that you wasted your money on the sand, but you do need to change your substrate ASAP. Why risk the life of your beardie when all the people who post on here will tell you it is a terrible choice of substrate? I can’t remember exactly who it was on here (J&B or Blue eyes) that posted an x-ray of beardie impacted with sand. Maybe someone will remember the link or bump the thread and then you’ll see for yourself the damage sand can and will do if ingested. I believe beardies live on packed dirt in their natural habitat, right Blue eyes? Sand is definitely a no-no, and I hope you make the right choice!

Books and are outdated as well as many other breeders who don’t want to stay with "it". Anyway commercial sands are the very worst. They do not digest like they claim. Beardies do not live on sand in the wild. They live on hard packed dirt in brushy areas. Sure they encounter it, but it’s not what they live on 24/7. Since you have seen him eating it, I strongly recommend you take it out now and put down paper towels or newspaper.

ok, you guys convinced me, I now have baby Drake happily in with paper towels and it doesn’t look half bad either, every grain of sand is now out . I just hope the little bit he ate won’t hurt him, but he barely ate any and I just got him. So I don’t guess it’ll hurt him.

I would have scooped the sand back in it’s original bag and returned it to the store, asked for a manager, and educated him/her on the dangers of sand, and demanded my money back! I’m glad you got rid of it. There is no risks with paper towels. Now show us some pics of your baby!!! LoL

That’s my lil Zoey escaping her bath in the sink lol

yeah I took the sand out really fast, now its in a beach bucket lol. My camera is still messed up, I can’t get it to turn on either, my brother will have to work his magic with it. Drake is doing good this morning too, he sleep under a loose paper towel, so cute.

Congrats! I’m glad you changed the substrate. Alot of people will come on here and wont take any advice from us and will keep using it, which is not good! Your beardie should be fine, just keep making sure he poops! I can’t wait to see pics of Draken, I bet hes a real cutie!
If you dont mind me asking, what greens are you feeding Draken?

Steven
