Behaviors I’ve had my Beardie since 1st week of Jan 05 and have so much to learn. Petco told my wife (she gave the Beardie to me as a gift) to use calci-sand and we darn near lost him to impaction last week. Now he (or she) is on paper towels. New thing today is that he is standing against glass or rock with mouth open, not as in defence, we stood on other side of room so he couldn’t see us. He has been doing this for about 4 hours now. Can someone direct me to a "behavior or traits" of Beardies site?

Behaviors like, constant non stop mouth open? Or is he under the heat light and occasionally opening it, this is gaping and is just him releasing heat. If it’s just constantly open all the time i’d say it could be a respiratory infection, if this is the case take him to a vet.

Behaviors I’ve been watching him and it seems like he has the hiccups or is burping. I will take him to a vet but I have to find one first. When I fed him some crikets a large one was mixed in with the mediums and he ate it. The pet store I get crickets from said to give him mealworms but I read otherwise on the net. I have been giving him 4 per day and he is 9 weeks old. Thanks for the reply

Behaviors The crickets shouldn’t be bigger than the space between their eyes. And he should eat ALOT more than 4 a day.

Behaviors Sorry I meant I feed him 4 mealworms a day along a bucket load of crickets (seems like). I dust the crickets with a multivitamin and provide some greens each day. Do they drink water or get it through the veggies and crickets?

Behaviors Welcome! Seems like your little guy has already had a rough go of it!!! Darn pet stores. Anyway. Yes they do get moisture from their veggies, but it is really not enough. You can spray/spritz him with warm water, but a lot of us bathe them every few days. Most grow to really enjoy their bath times! Assuming your beardie is a little guy, you may just want to use your bathroom sink. Make sure there is no soap film or anything, just wipe it out and fill it with warm water. (pee temperature as one member said lol) up to your little guys shoulders. He may try to jump at first, but be gentle but firm and hold him so he feels secure. You can also put a face cloth in the water for him to sit on. i just gently squeeze another face cloth with water on it, over my girls backs. They seem to enjoy it. Eventually he/she can move to the big pool (bath tub) Then they can really have a good swim! Be patient and I am sure that he will learn to love his bath. If you want to feed a treat to your little guy, you can feed him silkworms or the occasional wax worm. But please avoid mealworms. I hope this little guys health issues are all behind him! Once he is well and happy, you will really enjoy him. Guaranteed! Oh, and for a great diet site for dragons, go to www.beautifuldragons.com Good luck! Joan2, Puffy and Sasha (Sunshine)

Behaviors Thank you!! I have so much, some say do this and some say don’t. I think we figured out the problem, we are doing a kitchen remodel and today we sanded down the sheetrock and the dust went everywhere in the house. We bought a dragon book and it said gapping could be from too much dust.

Behaviors His/her name is Puddy. If you are a Sienfield fan remember Elaines boyfriend that sold Jerry his new Saab? He had a dry way of going "high five". Well, my beardie did that all day the first day I had him (the hand waving thing) and I kept thinking he was "high fiven" me and it reminded me of David Puddy, Elaines boyfriend. Now I’ll bet Puddy will be female, I just read how to sex ’em. I fell in love with him from the get go, the way they look you right in the eye as if to make contact, I’m hooked. We have 2 fat tail Gecko’s Bart and Greta. She is an egg laying fool and we are going to progress to breeding. Trying to figure out how to post picture. If I did anything to hurt this little guy I couldn’t live with myself, Thanks for all the info.

Behaviors Welcome and cant wait to see a picture of PUDDY!!!!About the meal worms, i personally would not feed those. Had a bad experience with them with one of our beardies. Meal worms are so small that most bearides inhale them and don’t chew them and if they eat alot, they can get impacted as well. We feed the super worms, which have a softer shell and they seem to have no problems with those. Not sure how big Puddy is so cant say for sure if i would feed those to him. Our beardy went like 5 days without poo after eating meal worms and finally in a warm bath passed all of them. Lets just say i could tell exactly what he had been eating. There were whole meal worms in his poo! So in my opinion, i would not feed them. Others here will agree!!!!!

Behaviors Hello, and welcome.i to would agree no mealworms they are just to risky, but then I see others have also said this. How big is he? You may be able to feed superworms..not sure on size and some places on the net you can order the small ones. If you want something other than crickets that can be used for staple diet try some silk worms. Wax worms are good for an occasional treat not a staple. You could also try butterworms. The web address above for beautifuldragons is a very good place for learning good things to feed and how much of it to feed. Fresh "salad" greens should be available from 1 hour after lights come on to one hour before they go off. If you have any questions please feel free to ask that is what we are here for and we will all do our very best to help you in any way we can...I wish you and Puddy the very best of luck and cant wait to see pictures. snowdude/Cash/Tango/Sierra

Behaviors Thanks, I am pretty sure I won’t be feeding him mealworms any longer. The feed store in town said they liked ’em but gave no caution. Puddy is about 8 inches head to tail. Haven’t put him on the scale yet. Question...the little guy does eat a lot of crickets do yous guys buy them bulk and have them shipped right to your house and then have a "cricket habitat" to keep them in? I am buying 4 doz. every other day @ $1.09 a doz. Our geckos aren’t as voracious eaters as the dragon.

Behaviors Just gave him his first bath. We have a round sink bottom in the bathroom and he got a nice workout trying to get out for the first few minutes LOL. He’s pooped, been fed and had a bath. He sure is mellow now, he wouldn’t even leave my wife’s hand to put back home he just laid there with his eyes half closed. Guess if I had just done the same I’d be ready for bed as well!! LOL

Behaviors Prisibear, i get mine from reptilefood.com...no mealworms should be avoided at all times, try superworms instead. Those have less chitin so less risk of impaction. Just don’t overfeed supers, they will get addicted.

Behaviors Aw, he is adorable!!!! What a cute little guy! Makes me want to run home from work and play with my dragons! On the subject of crickets, I get either 500 or 1000 at a time from either Fluker’s or reptiledirect.com. I’m not using Fluker’s right now because they won’t ship with a heat pack and it’s cold here. I keep them in a 10 gal tank with plenty of cricket meal and cricket quencher, a potato or carrot here and there. Paper towel/toilet paper rolls and carton for them to hide in. Just always make sure they have moisture available. welcome! Me & Grendel & Bailey

Gotta tell ya...I just love the high five thing, he usually does it first thing in the morning. I read that it is a non-aggressive gesture. Kinda like...dude...chill OK. LOL. I am learning that he likes cabbage but not red cabbage, he likes broccoli but not kale. Gonna try spinich, and no lettuce right fellow dragon lovers? I am going to get him an 18" high by 48" vivarium thats on sale and then use the 10 gallon tank for crickets. This website has been great for me. There is no better folks to learn from that those who share the same love for beardies Thanks all!!

Puddy There’s a great food list on beautifuldragons.com that we all sort of use as a "bible" for feeding. Broccoli and cabbage are not the greatest to feed him. Check out the list- there are tons of other things that are better for him. Mustard, collard, and turnip greens, along with fruits and other veggies!

Puddy Also, according to beautiful dragons spinach is a "questionable food." There are plenty of other things on that list that are better for your dragon to eat.

Thanks for the link. Headed there now. It seems if I keep him fat and happy w/crickets he won’t go for the veggies. Is it OK to kinda hold off on the crickets until he eats some veggies or will he come around as he gets older? I think I just answered my own question, I’ll wait ’till I find something he likes.

Puddy I believe while he’s young, he will eat 80% protein and 20% greens, then when he’s an adult, that will reverse. It’s always nice if you can get them to eat greens early on, I didn’t have Grendel his first year, and I don’t think his owner gave him greens, because it’s nearly impossible to get him to eat them now. He likes dandelion flowers and not much else. I sneak greens and RepCal pellets in his mouth when he’s not paying attention.

Puddy I thought that was the case but I just wanted to hear it from someone else. I’ve been reading other post about water dish, some say don’t need it some say they do. I had one for him but never seen him drink. We see our fat tails drink all the time but not Puddy. I was putting a little water in with mealworms and veggies thinking it would help but no more mealies. Do you have a little hut for Grendal to sleep in or hide? Puddy crawls under the paper towel flooring at night. P.S. Puddy sends his dragonlove to all and Oh yea...high five!

Puddy They get most of their moisture from their food, but when you give them baths (at least once a week if not more) they might take a good long drink. I always dribble water on their noses in the bath and it reminds them they’re thirsty and they’ll take a drink. A water dish in the tank is a matter of choice- if you use wheat bran or alfalfa pellets for substrate, you don’t want to have a water dish- you’ll have moldy substrate and a sick dragon. It would be okay with newspaper that you change regularly or with plastic shelf liner.
