I’m pretty sure their not illegal, but you would have to check with your cityor local pet store.Alot of the time the city does require you to go down and let them know you have a snake, what kind, that kinda thing just in case of a fire so they know what to do with it kinda thing...
Alberta is very strict and their legal their...if you see a rat in Alberta you HAVE to kill it on sight by law.
I dont think you would have a problem, and if they were illegal your pet store would not be able to bring them in.
