 New to BD’s: Ideal Setup?

Hey all!

I’m a bit new to BD’s and herps in general, though i’ve been learning a ton from my herper friends here at home. :) Quick question: If you were going to get a new animal and set up an enclosure, what would it be like? What size tank would you use? What substrate, furniture, lamps, feed, etc? MVB’s or Fluorescents? Plastic, acrylic or glass enclosure?

Thanks for all the info!

well it depends, would this new animal be a beardie? im going to assume so, so here is what i have. i will answer every question in order.

1. it would be nice.lol

2.if its a baby i would use a 20 gallon. an adult needs no less than a 40 gallon breeder.

3.substrates for babies include, newspaper, paper towels, reptile carpet. adults include wheat bran, those listed above, shelf liner, and alphalpha pellets. NO sand. its a TERRIBLE substrate.

4. they need a basking branch within 4-10 inches of the uvb/mvb.

5. lamps can be either an mvb by itself and a heater if it gets cold in your house, or a uvb, a flood lamp, and a heat lamp(if it gets cold)

6. you can give crix,c*ckroaches, super worms, wax worms, butter worms, no meal worms. and for veggies go to here for a list of appropriate food stuffs. foolow the color coding.

7. etc? um, they need baths and mistings, very friendly, and some other stuff.lol. be more specific i can help you.

8. mvb, or uvb with flood lamp.

9. glass. the other two scratch to easy as beardies don’t understand the concept of glass and plastic so when they hit it they are constantly trying to get over it and scratch anything other than glass.

well i hope i’ve’d help. im sure someone responded in the long time it took me to do this.lol

Yes, it would be for a beardie, sorry about that! What combination of lighting do you use personally? Has anyone read Melissa Kaplan’s article on MVB’s? Anyone agree/disagree?

Hi, I’m Carol. I’ve got mvb’s in both tanks, fluorescent strip lights in both tanks, and Grendel has an extra daylight bulb in his because the tank is so big and it needs to be as bright as possible. Grendel is STILL brumating, but I have all his lights on to encourage him to get up pretty soon- his eyes were open this morning, so I put food out in case he decides to get his lazy butt up. It’s MARCH for heaven’s sake, time to get UP!!!! Bailey is so hyper I can’t imagine her ever brumating- she’ll be old enough next winter, so we’ll see what happens.
Welcome to the forum, hope we’ve made some sense trying to help you. Like Kevin said, UVB, proper diet, and NO SAND are crucial to their good health. And calcium supplement. And lots of hugs. And baths to help hydrate them. The list goes on and on....
