You really need to get a digital thermometer with a probe to keep track of the basking temps. The stick on ones are junk and if it is on the back wall, it’s not going to give you an accurate temp of the basking spot anyway.I leave my thermometer’s probe in my tanks all the time however some people don’t. If he is basking to the side of the bulb, chances are it is too hot for him directly under the bulb. You can purchase a digital thermometer at walmart or target for under $10. Hope this helps.

oh I thought that you just moved the probe around and it tells you the temp, I didn’t know that you had to just put it in one place.

The probe is connected to the digital thermometer (at the end of the long wire) when you buy it. Basically the thermometers are used to check temps outside while having the digital read out inside your home but they work great for checking and keeping an eye on basking temps. The digital readout, the wire, and the probe are all one unit...that can be purchased at Walmart or Target for under $10. The stick on thermometers are garbage and not accurate at all. The probe in the pic that I have circled, is connected to the wire which is connected to the unit that tells me my temps.

Master Of Cold Blood...you can move the probe where ever you want to to check a temp. I just leave my probe in the basking area cuz I don’t want to cook my babies (paranoid beardie mommy here lol) With mine tho, I just have to flip the switch on the side of the thermometer to get the temp on the cool side because it is hanging on the cool side with a suction cup.

here’s a better pic of my thermometer.

lol @ Julie!
Jango never attacked her probe, but Gizmo, my leo, did. I had to duct tape it down, but he’d still get it unstuck. It would be hanging there and I’d see him attack it. lol! They’re too funny!
Now I’ve taken out all the digital thermometers and use a temp gun. They’re so much easier to use. I’d never switch back!

Nope...my beardies never attack the probe. I’ve seen them lick it but never attack it. I use a temp gun too but I have the digitals so I just leave them in the tanks all the time cuz I don’t have any other use for them lol

I’ve got the cheesy $4.99 Petco thermometer on the tank wall to get a general idea, and have the temp gun to get accurate temps in different areas of the tank. I move my lamps around a bunch, so the temp gun is a must. Bailey changes her main basking spot nearly every day- got to keep up with her.

I’m glad I don’t have to move my lamps around cuz I use lamp stands lol. Mine bask in the same spot all the time.

Hmph- I added a daylight lamp to Bailey’s tank because it just didn’t seem bright enough with the MVB and the fluorescent, and now she basks under the daylight instead of the MVB. She’s still close enough to the MVB to get the benefit of it, but I wonder why she does that?

Our little girls must be a lot alike! I tricked her this morning and moved her MVB to see where she ends up basking today.
