 OT - the fund raiser

Hey all,
Just stopping by to tell you that the fund raiser for Jason went great! I want to thank all of you who have contributed, and for the prayers that you have put in.

All together we have raised close to $7,000. Lots of people showed up and the support they gave was overwhelming. It has really lifted our spirits.

Jason isn’t going in for treatments yet, they are still looking for a bone marrow donor. They have a list of many people that could be a match for him, but it takes a little while to sift through them all. Meanwhile Jason is pretty much acting like his normal self, but we are both getting more and more nervous about the transplant as time goes on.

Just thought I would give you all an update.

I feel especially close to Herp Haven as I have been on the bone marrow donor list up here in Canada for about 15 years now. So we thought it would be so wonderful if it worked out that I was a match for Jason. We lost my grand dad to leukiema 55 years ago, a couple months before my birth. I always wished that I had known him so this is something very near to my heart. Back then of course, there was not much that could be done for people suffereing from blood diseases. Now it is a whole new world, and Jasons prospects for a long healthy life are so much more positive. I strongly urge everyone here to go out and sign up. There could be no greater gift than giving someone a second chance at a healthy life. Joan2

I think it is important for us all to reflect on what becoming a marrow/organ donor really means to a person with a potentially deadly illness.. Please think about it. Sign up. You could mean the world to someone. Thanks Joan2

Joan you are so right!!! My Aunt (Dad’s sister) passes at the age of 7 years from leukemia. At that time there really wasn’t anything that could be done, but now there is and people like you are making that possible. I never really thought about it until now, so I’m going to check into it for myself and I hope others will too.

At least signing donor cards. I understand that it costs to be put on the list for marrow. I can’t imagine that it is much of an insentive when it costs you money, but.... if you have health care coverage, maybe that helps to pay for some of the testing.

We are donors here, but after seeing what goes on with a body that is being tested for organ donation it almost makes you think twice about that.

Really? Why? I don’t know about that, although it doesn’t matter much to me because the body just temporarily houses the soul... But I don’t know much about the testing. Hmmmm. Interesting though.... Joan2

We just got a phone call from the doctor. They are down to 6 people that could be a match for jason, and they are narrowing it down. The transplant will be in 6 weeks or less. We are both getting a little worried and antsy.

Just know we are all praying for you and Jason.

Joan, I worked in ICU when the donor team from one of the major hospitals came out and it was just total disrespect for that person. They treated him like an object. I know he was legally dead but I’m one that believes in respecting the body even at that point. Even though he was not feeling or hearing what was going on, it was still very sad to me. I asked the nurse that works that unit full time if this was normal and she said it was.

I dated a medic before and he said that his coworkers tended to joke around a lot and be what may be considered rude after someone died. It was kind of their only way of handling it...being around death so much. They had to make a joke out of it as if it would make it less serious or real somehow. I guess I can kind of see this but I don’t know if I could be like that either. I believe the body is temporary, but I would still show it respect, if for no other reason than the family. Or I would have to think I wouldn’t want my parents treated like that when they were dead, so why should I treat someone else like that?

How bad are we talking here with the disrespect? That would be a key point to this conversation. The way my ex-beau talked, it sounded like they just had smart@$$ terms for moving the dead bodies (that made them sound more like objects). Maybe you are talking about something a lot worse.
