Heres some of my Dragons, oh you mean beardies only, oh well... Heres Snuggles (female on right) at 19 inches and 571 grams, shes now around 16 or so months old, she has layed 118 eggs already this year, every 3-4 weeks like clockwork she lays 21 more. Thats Nemo at his basking spot, hes the father of some HUGE baby dragons, hes 21.5 inches and 671 grams, hes a 2 year old hypo-orange-pastel-german giant. Yes, they live together 24/7 and they have an order in which they eat, she eats first then he gets what she doesnt, he helps her dig nests sometimes, he guards her while she lays eggs, and protects her and her eggs from intruders, such as all beardies that are properly living should.

This is Nemo and Snuggles son that I kept, he is Frodo at 16 inches and only 4 months old (on the right). The Snow Giant on the left is a male also, he is 5 months old and 16.5 inches long, they get along great (ooohh Im breaking the rules, male dragons living together, pairs living together, dirt for substrate, high basking temps 168f, yet they grow soo fast and reproduce constantly, hmm maybe just maybe theres something for people in the beardie world to learn from captive monitors).

Heres my real dragons, the beautiful animals that have taught me over 13+ years to let the animals teach me how to properly care for them, I keep my monitors and my beardies the same only with more dirt than the beardies and bigger cages!!! This is Sobek the largest female whitethroat or blackthroat ever on record she was 6ft 2 inches at 2 years and 6 months old, that was a few months ago. Shes a BT/WT/WT cross, a female BT crossed with a male cape banded WT, then the same male crossed with one of his daughters at 6 months old.

This is her basking spot that has a hot spot 165f+ larger than her STV length and wider using 45 watt halogen outdoor flood bulbs, infact every reptile of mine uses the same bulbs, and NO UVB lights period (oh no Im breaking the rules again).

This is Sedona my 2 year old red ackie (the reptilian squirrel), his basking spot has a high point of 200f sometimes higher, there the beast is coming out of one of his burrows. Note the temp...

This is Shadow, an older pic hes my male BT/WT cross, hes almost 4 years old in a few months, he took the size and build of a Cape Banded WT (his father) at 4ft and 10.5lbs.

No, bosc monitors are medium sized.. African species that grows between 30 and 48 inches on average, but a few very rare monsters growing a few inches beyond. They are the smallest monitor species in Africa. Those are V. Albigularis "white throated monitor", they are blackthroat whitethroat cross (BT/WT cross) and Sobek is a BT/WT WT cross, they are a large species of monitor that can average from 4ft to over 7ft on very rare occaisions. Albigs eat bosc monitors where they are found together. The easy way to look at it is this, boscs are food for cobras, cobras are food for albigs. Albigs are the heaviest bulkiest monitor species from Africa, being just short of a niles length. This pic is the largest bosc Ive ever seen proof of period, he is 54 inches long (4ft 6inches), my first monitor, and one of my best teachers on reptile husbandry.

Heres some of my Dragons, oh you mean beardies only, oh well... Shvar, no offense, but it looks rather dirty in the beardies’ cages. Also, the female has bite marks from breeding (I do understand that it does happen), but shouldn’t you separate them until she is healed, especially with all that dirt in there? I would think that would lead to infection. Also, I don’t care what anyone says, I understand that is the surface temp, but a thermal burn on your reptile will not be good. IMO that temp is too high, anyone else? Just giving my two cents, not trying to start an arguement or anything.

Heres some of my Dragons, oh you mean beardies only, oh well... I agree Reptichik, I hadn’t read it or really even looked at those pictures closely. It is dirty. The temps are WAY to high. I’m curious what makes you think those temps are fine? In case you didn’t know sitting on soil like that because that is what that is soil not dirt, can cause yellow fungus. They obviously have dominance issues if they can’t eat together and therefore should not live together. She shouldn’t even have been bred yet at 16 months let alone lay numerous clutches. The female should also be alone to lay her eggs. She should be on paper towels and clean to heal from any wounds. Again this is why I left this site. I don’t even like to know of this ignorance. This makes newer members think this type of husbandry is ok.

They live on dirt, dirt is the best substrate for lizards period.. Those marks are dirt from her just laying eggs a few days before the pics, those are not bite marks, he has never bitten her, they eat togther, they sleep together, heck if you read my post he even helps dig up the nest she makes. Have you ever seen a bearded dragon nest that they make with the proper substrate? They dig a hole rather deep, then level the area flat after laying eggs, then they constuct a huge mound over top of them after resting, boith male and female protect the eggs, and the male protects the female. Why in blue blazes would you ever separate a bonded pair, or have you ever seen a bonded pair of lizards even? Im not in this to make money therefore I have no interst in selectively breeding them to who I want to breed with, they are pets, they are a bonded pair, they will stay together as long as they get along. I have been caring for and raisiong reptiles with exception of a few years for 20+ years, Im not some teenager that got his first lizard, Ive kept monitors longer than some here have even lived. These animals dont want to be alone anymore than you or I do, so why make a social (yes social animal) into forced solitary confinement if they get along? Wacth who you take advice from, do you think they enjoy living on a shelf liner, or paper? I put hatchlings, lots and lots of hatchlings on paer towells for around 2-4 months then they live on dirt 24/7, a usable substrate. I am telling you this because I have no reason to gain from you or anyone else in you having to buy or replace dragons, Im telling you hopw to keep them healthy. Also, I recnetly had a female firetiger beardie I bought from a well known reputable breeder that had to be put down after a reputable experienced herp vet decided there was nothing else to do for her, she was diagnosed infected by a deadly disease from her original breeders living conditions, this breeders name will be kept confidential, as this isnt about them, they keep their animals in the way you suggest, not allowing the animals to have an immune system, causing bacterial infections, and yellow fungus which is carried in their digestive systems, they inherit it, they do not gain it from dirt, or bird poop, or any other lousey excuses, if its there its there, they live fine with it if they are healthy, if not they get secondary infections. Ask a good vet without referring to any of your own animals, because vets tell a lot of things to owners of sick animals to prevent them from feeling bad for being the cause of their animals demise. By the way that female I referred to was being kept by someone else for me, I took over her care because she was going down hill from the start, she was diagnosed by the vet through blood and fecal exams to have this deadly disease, that is known to be inherited through birth. Im not worried about losing one through no fault of my own, if it were my fault I would make adjustments to fix those problems. I have never had any of the problems you mentioned with any beardie.

Since when are 86f too high of air temps on the hot end?? Since when are 68-72f too high on the cool end? Since when is 168f a surface temp directly below that 86 f air temp too high if they use it, and it does no harm? Think about it, in nature they use higher temps on surfaces. Heres a test take an infared thermometer outside on a wrm day check the surface temps in the sun on rocks, bricks, plywwod, logs, etc, youll be very suprised that its that high and higher, why do so few people know this, imagine how hot those same surfaces are in the outback, or in Asia, or in Africa on similar surfaces, 200f+ easily and higher, and yes they use it there to. The idea is that a lizard can bask on a high surface temp, and go back to hiding, climbing, digesting without exposing itself to stress and the open all day. Check the basking temps in your cages on surfaces that they bask under bulbs. Im only using 45 watt bulbs, imagine what the temps are under higher watt bulbs, that is where beardie bacon comes from high watt bulbs and the inability to evenly heat their entire STV size resulting in burns on prominent parts of their backs. I also am involved with a reptile rescue of many many abused inproperly kept animals that are kep the same way, and they heal and recover so fast as well grow so fast in such a short time that the former owners dont recognize their animals in 2-4 weeks. We take animalsmany of them with burns, and keep them the same way I have outlined and they never burn period, in 20+ years Ive never had a lizard or any reptile burn itself. You have to understand what a temp gradient is, they dont want or need to be in 85f all day.

Since when are 86f too high of air temps on the hot end?? Do what you want but don’t bring your ways to new impressionable young people that will have a very ill lizard by doing what you do. I breed dragons I do have a pair with a VERY Strong bond and they live together always because they do not mate constantly. SO since I breed I have seen a proper laying bin. It is proven that letting them stay dirty as you say she is from the day before and keeping them on soil like that can cause yellow fungus. I’m not telling you to stop your ways by all means do whatever the hell you want but don’t bring it to the people here looking for help.

Since when are 86f too high of air temps on the hot end?? I have also done some research on yellow fungus, and apparently one of the more deadlier forms does seem to arise from them being housed outside on dirt, someone please let me know if they have any other info on this disease. The reason it can be passed from mother to baby is not inheriting it, it is contact with it, whether permeating the shell when laid or what. If the disease you are talking about is adenovirus, then again, I do not believe it is inherited, it can be passed the same way as stated above, hence the "virus", although I do know that much still needs to be learned on this subject. I do agree that some males and females can be housed together as long as one is not stressing the other out. But I do have to say Shvar, he is biting her if they are breeding. The male does hold on to the back of the females neck when breeding, and in that pic, it does look like those are wounds from the male biting her for that reason. I believe you now when you say it is dirt, but they just look like bite marks. I understand that beardies in the wild do live on dirt, but your animals are not wild, they are captive, therefore they do not have the immunities built up that wild animals would, and dirt is well, dirty, carrying many parasites and who knows what else. You can keep your animals anyway you want, but it doesn’t mean that we cannot give our opinion here, that what the forum is all about. I was just making an observation. Didn’t you catch some flack on kingsnake about this very subject?

Those people dont know squat about a healthy lizard.. Let alone how to properly house them. You said it yourself, bad immune systems, yes in captivity if kept wrong (ie on paper, dehydrated, etc etc) they do have no immune system therefore they get everything that comes along, household bacteria from your hands off of the kitchen or bathroom sink etc etc. But if you allow them to live in a proper substrate, if you allow them to live in a way that instinct tells them is somewhat close to natural they have an immune system, nothing bothers them at that point. I have monitors that have many times ripped claws out, entire ends of toes, and they are healed shut in 24 hours with skin cover and they were never cleaned, treated, or removed from the dirt but for a few minutes to look at the injury. They form new claws in a few days, why, they have an immune system, they have the ability to heal, to fight naturally found fungus and bacteria which whether you or anyone else likes it or not are in their intestines naturally and youll never get rid of it. Until you or anyone else can prove that lizards kept in dirt is detrimental to them, or can even keep your own alive for very long, then why argue that a proven method is wrong, because someone who has a financial interest in you buying UV bulbs or buying more baby beardies from them says so??? Im sorry I dont sell mine, mine are sold by someone else and I get a few bucks to recover food costs, this is a hobby not a business to me. How about all of those people who breed lizards of al types and have done so consistantly for 20-40 years who use dirt, and always have with more sucess and older animals than anyone on here. People ask every now and then how old does this lizard live to? How about this one, well it wouldnt be such a mystery to so many if they were kept in a useful cage on a useful substrate. Understand those thing do alot more than look pretty and keep them from escaping.
