 Does size matter?

My female is rather short, 11 inches in comparison to my German Giant who is closer two feet. Will this pose a problem for the mating? I have seen him doing the nape biting but their reproductive aspects don’t seem to line up. Do you think they will figure that part out? I am rather new to this but the breeding 101 seems very helpful.

My question to you would be why are you breeding an 11" female in the first place? Genetically inferior specimens don’t make good breeding candidates regardless of what sex they are. The only thing that will be accomplished if they succeed is muddying up the beardie gene pool even more than it already is. As a breeder it is your ethical responsibility to only allow the best of the best to breed. Not to sound like a nazi but these are animals and not people. If they’re the only 2 dragons you’ve got then I say wait and buy better dragons to breed.

i dont think hes talking about an" inferior’ beardie just a smaller breed say a normal. which nothing wrong with that in my book. and just because shes a 11 inches doesnt mean something is wrong with her, she may not be fully grown yet. Sean i understand what ur saying ive got a BD that acts and looks like she has downs so i would never consider her for breeding but she is a sweetie and that makes for a great pet.crossing breeds gets the morphs that cost so much. he may get the sharpest looking one you’ve ever seen than again he may get something a bit retarded.

She is not a giant herself but actually a Normal and I understood her to be of proper size for this species. She has some fantastic markings and I hope that she would pass some of them on. If this is unethical or wrong I am sorry but I thought that this was how we try to get cool dragon markings and such. If this is still unethical I will discontinue the breeding process. Please get back to me as I am only trying to do what is right.

She is also only about 1.5-2 years old and is likely not yet fully grown.

Correct me if I am wrong here but 1 1/2-2 years is pretty much fully grown. 11 inches is not just a normal is is an extremely small dragon and I would suspect that either inbreeding, an unhealthy mother at the time of laying, incorrect husbandy while young, or an underlying helath issue is the cause. I would definately not breed her and now way to a german giant for the sake of your female.
Dale
PS the eggs from german giants are larger then the norm and I would think at that size your girl would have problems with even normal sized ones.

Normal or not 11" is extremely small for a female vitticeps and I would suspect the same reasons as Dale. Cool markings and color are selectively bred for but they are all still vitticeps, even german giants, and need to be of proper size and health. Breeding small dragons is extremely taxing on your female and the underlying health conditions that most of them have makes survival questionable, even if you don’t know or see the health problems. She may be a great pet but IMO she should not be bred.

I agree with the guys and gals above. She should not be bred, she is really too small. Unless you want to pair her up to a really small male and then you could sell "teacup dragons". Just kidding. :)

I have access to a 13 1/2 inch female dragon. Would that be a better selection or do you guys think that it would be too small as well? Not as pretty... The smaller was a rescue case. Thanks for all your help I really value actually talking to people who know what they are talking about.

Even 13.5 inches seems small (quiet Dale LOL) How much does she weigh? As Sean says in "101" 350 grams should be a minimum weight. She should also be in top physical condition. Egg laying is very tough on even a superior dragon. Be very careful about what you are doing.

Wow - 380 grams at that length? She must be quite a chunk! You ought to post a picture of her.

I’m biting my tongue at this very moment Mike. Valley, I know I am, my tongue has scars from biting it at the things I think. My mind is my own worst enemy.
