We have 2 beardies, M & F. We are hoping to breed them. They are and have been in the same aquarium. How do we create the best breeding environment? Should they be together? We have a heat lamp and a heat pad plus UV light. One side has wet sand over 6in. deep. How do we increase the heat? We feel like idiots. What do we need to do??? Help please. |

| Hey Mumsrus, No need to feel like idiots, most of us didn’t know what was going on when we got our first dragons. I would first get rid of the sand and use a safer substrate like alpha alpha pellets or something along them lines. Even newspaper or paper towels. You never specified how old your dragons are or how big they are. You shouldn’t breed your female until apporximately a year and a half. During trying to breed you want to make sure your female gets plenty of calcium and nutrients. Dragons are probably one of the easist lizards to breed, so as long as your cage is warm, and has a basking spot, proper lighting, and proper diet...you should have no problem breeding them. Just to let you know what you are getting into, be prepared to get an incubator and some vertmiculie for egg laying. Also you will have to find a place to order thousands of small crickets for when the babies are born. Then find people to get rid of your babies to. I don’t recommend selling them to pet shops because they get mistreated in alot of petshops, and unsuspecting new hobbyist find alot of extra medical bills to pay for their lizards, and some just die shortly after pet shop purchase. One other important thing I should mention if you are going to breed your dragons is to get stool samples done and check for parasites, especially coccidia. You don’t want to breed your lizards until they have a clean bill of health. Good Luck PE |

Why do we need to get rid of the sand? We understood that the female needs to dig to encourage her to lay eggs. Our beardies are two years of age. The female is much bigger than the male and at times is more agessive than the male. The female waves her arm and the male bobbs his head. We had the light time down for six weeks the slowly increased it. Added a heating pad under the sand it increase the heat. We still need more heat because the temp isn’t quit right. Do we add another light? The temp of our home is cool so the tank loses some heat. Our Beardies were also breed in captivity so we do not think they would have any bugs, or would thinking be wrong? We have observied the male dig a hole and stay there for a couple of days. We tend to over mother him and remove hime from the hole so he will eat. Should we do this, or is this natural? Please help we are still at a loss. |

| If they ingest the sand it may cause impaction in their intestines. I keep my dragons on newspapers most of the time and have had no problems getting them to breed or lay eggs. I wait until I can see my femalie is has the eggs, then I put in a bin with some moistened vermiculite. When she is ready she will lay the eggs in that. Just because a lizard is captive breed does not mean that they are parasite free. Where do you get your live food from? Some petshops throw crickets into a tank, when the lizards don’t eat them, they put them back with the rest of the crickets, which may result in spreading parasites. PE |

| How big is the cage? Stress from overcrowding will often result in infertility issues. You may need to separate them for a few months to reduce stress hormones and let the reproductive hormones cycle back up to normal levels and then put them together again. Most breeders keep males and females separately to reduce stress and increase the odds of successful mating, they only put them together for 3 to 7 days when they plan to breed. Too high humidity and too low cage temps can also be a contributing factor. The female doesn’t need an egglaying medium until she’s nearly ready to lay eggs and wet sand may just be keeping the humidity too high. Make sure humidity is between 30 and 60% and there’s a basking temperature of 95-115 degrees. |

| I’m confused. You have absolutely no idea what you’re doing with the bearded dragons you already have, and you want to breed them?? You obviously don’t understand the time and work that goes into it. Have you read any literature? What makes you qualified to breed? What are the reasons you’re breeding? Do you have all the equiptment? Do you know the cost? What will you do with all the babies? Got homes? My advise...........seperate your dragons and work on taking care of THEM properly first. Get some books and read as much as you can about breeding and the cost, time and care it involves. Get off this forum and contact some reputable breeders. The advise you get there will be much more valuable. Take responsibility and be responsible. |

| Romeo is just a little intense. Probably has no reptiles. Although I think his questions were realistic, but he does need to take a different approach. He seems to think freedom of information is bad unless it is published. Some people feel that if it is in a book, then thats the way it has to be. Romeo, if it takes that much work and time, then how is a breeder going to make time to answer everyones questions? Did you ever breed dragons before romeo? Romeo, if you don’t like forums so much then maybe you get off of them. PE |

| okay well now I hope the family feud is over. I have a question but first an update. They are bobbing heads and he is aresive and grabs her by the back of the neck. Now I don’t think the deed has taken place. She has been digging in the sand, this has been going on for three days. Her belly is not big and it does not look like she has any eggs, infact her belly shows no change in size. What could this digging be, am I an over reacting parent or is she doing this to bug me. They are not eating at the monent in fact the male hasn’t moved for two days. The female has eaten very little today and is continuing to dig up the heating pad and trys to dig through it. Any ideas? I have not removed the sand and is that realy nessesary to move it. They are usually very active in the tank and love to be taken out and ride on my shoulder. Help |

She could either be digging a wallow in preparation for brumating, or she could be ovulating which sometimes triggers a digging session. Hard to tell which, you’ll just have to wait and see if she settles into a long nap or starts looking chubby. |
