Just wonderin’ Hi, at what age are bearded dragons able to reproduce? Do they need a cooling period? how long does the cooling period need to be? How many eggs are laid each season?

Just wonderin’ Males will generally hit puberty around 6 months, females around 8 months. Some go earlier some later but females should not be bred under 12-18 months and 300 grams. They do not need to be cooled in order to breed. One breeding can produce multiple clutches around once a month for up to 18 months (usually around 3-6 though). No male needs to be present after the initial breeding, they retain sperm and will refertilize with it. Average clutch size depends greatly on the size of your female, larger ones produce larger clutches, average clutch size is 20-30 eggs.Sean

Just wonderin’ Thanks for the info I’m am thinking about breeding them in the future(well I’ll need to get some first lol), may I ask if you’ve ever bred them before? out of those 20/30 eggs how many normaly hatch?(I wouldnt be breeding for money or anything like that I just think they are intersting and the babys are very sweet), oh one more question how many crickets/meal worms does your avrage adult beardie eat daily? (along with its veggies & pellets of coarse) Thanks in advance for any info you can give.

Just wonderin’ Heartmountain does breed as do I and babies cost A LOT! Hatch rate depends on your conditions. Mealworms are not a good food choice for any dragon but a good feeding schedule of prey items for adults is 6-10 crickets a day and a few superworms 5-6 days a week. Too much fat/protien is not good for adults. Of course more would be ok when feeding a breeding female. I do not recommend pinkies. Silkworms are a great staple prey item as well. I feed lobster roaches and silkworms primarily as well as superworms and butterworms.

Just wonderin’ Hi, I was just reading over the posts again and it accured to me, Heatmountion(please excuse the spelling) you said that they will lay several cluches for a period of between6/18 months, now you said a cluch consists of 20/30 eggs I was wondering do you mean that every cluch they lay has that amount of eggs in it?and does that mean that all those cluches laid that year have 20/30 eggs each? that would be alot of eggs per season,

Just wonderin’ Each clutch (laying) has around 20-30 eggs. Grand total off of 1 female for a season can exceed several hundred eggs.Sean

Just wonderin’ Thanks for the reply Sean, I am still debating but if I do get several and do breed I was wondering if the babys are normaly easy to sell? around here they go for 90 to 160$ in pet stores for the normal colored ones and they go fairly fast(the babys), I dont want to try to make money off of them I just want to breed to experince caring for the eggs, babys & watching them grow up and adopting them into loving homes, I would have the money to support them at lest through one year of breeding(I may discontiune breeding them after a year or so). My main qeustions about breeding are: how old should the pair be? and if I cant sell the babys right away can they be housed together?

Just wonderin’ Your female should be 12-18 months old and at least 300 grams. It’s not as important on the male because his job is over reletively quick. Younger females will generally have smaller clutches and not as many of them in a row but that doesn’t always hold true. As far as selling them, it depends on what you’re breeding (colors) but in general right now the market sucks for selling. I know several people that breed fairly high end stuff that have had to resort to selling it wholesale at $20 an animal. Yes you can house babies together but the more you put together the bigger the chance of nips and then you can’t even wholesale them. Hopefully the market will come back next season but for now if you don’t have a name chances are you’re going to be sitting on a lot of babies eating you out of house and home. Best of luck to ya whatever you decide.Sean

Just wonderin’ first off. not to be rude is that you should not even THINK about breeding until you’ve had experience. then you can decide but don’t even come across till you understand everything. also you should be learning about how to take care of a single dragon. you should study care not breeding. sorry to be rude but i’d rather have you be experienced and more understanding.

Just wonderin’ If you didn’t have enough for lights and don’t have the time for one or two dragons you shouldn’t even be thinking of breeding. Lighting alone if your breeding will cost you a few hundred a year depending on how many babies you have. Not to mention caging, food and the electric bill. You can’t go away when you have babies either.

Just wonderin’ I couldnt afford the lighting THEN but may be able to now, I dont go away for the summer or anything...never have, I told everyone that I was THINKING about it not that I was for sure going to breed them, acctuly after thinking it through I may just stick with what I have(two leos & a green iguana) or I may get a single pet beardie for cristmus, so I will NOT be breeding bearded dragons as according to all I’ve read they lay ALOT of eggs per year and I wouldnt have the heart to throw the "extra" eggs out, also I would have difficulty selling the babys as I tend to try keep as many or all of the babys any animal of mine produces also I would be scared of my babys going to horrible homes where people dont know that they need uvb or that they need a 40 gallon tank or larger, things liek that so right now I will not be breeding them...maybe in a few years thou.

Just wonderin’ That’s good. When I said go away, I meant for a day or two not the summer. I definitely recommend one as a pet though providing you can afford lighting, food and vet bills.
