 In the Laybox

Ok. So I am back with Wanda ready to lay her next clutch, or I think she’s ready. I did soooooo much wrong last time that now I am terrified she’s gonna struggle again.

Today is the first day she started digging. I think I’ve done everything right by her as far as her food, calcium, vitamins, baths, substrate this time and her belly is big like a sack of marbles. I just got home and found her digging so I put her in the laybox right away.

The laybox has the dirt sand mix that Krusty recommended. It’s a rubbermaid, the dirt is sloping and there is a lot of it in there so she can dig all she wants. I have a floodlight aimed at the slope and I put a screen over the top so she wouldn’t climb out. I put her in and she’s just sitting there.

How long do I leave her in there if she’s not digging around? I don’t want to cause her to hold the eggs again, so I’m afraid to keep her in her tank, but she’s looking at me like ok why did you put me in here?

Any advice would be much appreciated again!!!

Barbara

good luck with her this time i normally just pour all my dirt in her own envirment in the corner in a big mound and pat it down cos i tryed putting her in another lay box and stuff but mine sat there so i just pour it in her tank it makes a mess yer ull have to buy some more sand or wot ever u use but its worth it not having her holding eggs in

Babs
We put ours in when they dig in the cage for more then a few minutes at a time. Some seem to really like it if we make a starter hole for them, others wont touch it if we have done anything but pack it down. Make sure it is damp enough to pack down some but not wet. If you oack the mix down before she starts digging it helps not only prevent cave ins on the dragon but it really makes it easier to dig up the eggs. You know your close when you hit the soft fill the female packed onto the eggs. If shes not digging after an hour or 2 we put them back in the cage until they start digging again and so on until she digs for real and lays. !st time usually the hardest so just dont panic from what you have said your doing right by her, so now its time to let her do her thing. When shes been in the hole head pointed out for more then 4 hours hours then its time to get a little worried about binding. but if she dig a little and stops or dosent dig at all in the lay box just keep an eye and put her back when she digs again. -Jay

Not to worry.....I answer to Babs too!

I am putting her back in her tank now. She’s been in the lay box for over an hour and is trying to climb out. I think she’s not quite ready.

I will keep you all posted.......keep your fingers and toes crossed for Wanda!

Honestly, do you know what I did for my female that started digging to lay her first clutch, I started a hole for her, and she continued with that hole, and eventually it kept caving in on her, so she started to give up I think, and so what I did, was I took a plastic box, and put it upside down, and cut the front and the back of the off, width wise so it just had the bottom of the box upwards, and left the long sides of the box on, and I put it upside down in her laybox, and put all of her vermiculite inside it, and ontop of it so it was completely covered, and then I started a hole for her inside the box, and put her in the hole to show it to her, and she continued the hole as usual. I also put a thin towel over her lay box for privacy. But the whole point of the box, was to prevent all of her substrate from caving in on her and stressing her out, and it worked so awesome, eventually, she dug all the way to the back of the box, and she layed her eggs. I think it was the smartest thing I’ve ever thought of. So maybe try that if all else fails.

She’s back in there and I started a hole for her. She is actually digging in there now. I think she might actually figure out what she’s supposed to do this time! I added a towel for privacy, that seemed to help her out.

Thanks to all....I’ll keep you posted!!

Oh......once she starts actually laying eggs, how do I know when she is done and when to take her out of the laybox?

We are sooo proud of Wanda! She went back in the laybox this morning, dug a deep tunnel, backed into it, and then buried the eggs just like she is supposed to. I can’t believe how well they cover them up and pack them down. Took me forever to dig them out!! We now have 21 more eggs in the incubator.

Looks like only six of the twenty five in the first clutch are good, but we are keeping them in the incubator just in case. Considering what she went through and that we almost lost her, we will take the six little miracles.

Now she is skinny, happy, and pigging out!

I know I have said it before, but thank you to everyone on RZ that has helped me with Wanda. She didn’t suffer a bit with this clutch THANKS TO YOU GUYS!

DON.T FREEZE THEM UNLESS THEY MOLD OVER Barbara .The 6 eggs that hatched were almost completely collapsed but they never molded. They collapsed at 35 day,I think it might have been a humidity problem.Take care Barbara
