 Curious on newborns

I was wondering what most of you do with your newborns, Do you sell right away, give them away, keep them? I plan on getting a bearded dragon couple, and i would like to know what other people do when they lay eggs. I would love for them to have eggs, but raising 15+ babies must be difficult. How many crickets would you say you been a clutch of 20 a week. i know it varies, but just an estimate would help. ive searched all over, but didnt find answers that made sense or answered my questions
thanks

Hey,

Bearded Dragons retain sperm, so a female can lay between 20-50 eggs once a month for up to a year.

You never keep a male and female together. If you are going to get both, make sure you house them separately. If you house them together they will breed before she is ready and it will greatly damage her. She needs to be 350 grams and at least 18 months old.

you need an incubator to incubate the eggs. Once they hatch you have to raise them for at least 8 weeks. Can’t sell them or give them away until they are at least 8 inches and 8 weeks old.

Bearded dragon babies go through their first shed between 5-8 weeks old. At this time a lot of them die because it is their first major stress. They just stop eating. So, no, you don’t want to either give them away or sell them until you know they are healthy and thriving.

Crickets are expensive. My last clutch I had 10 babies. 8 survived and I was going through over 1000 crickets every three days. But, the crickets are the least of your worries. Let’s say your female lays 5 clutches, and every clutch has 30 eggs. That’s 150 babies. You can’t house them all together, the most per container is 5 they say, but I house three per container, and even so, it’s too many in each enclosure. So, let’s see, that’s 30 containers if you keep them 5 in each. That means you also need 30 heating lamps, 30 UVB bulbs, 30 basking areas (branches, bricks......etc) 30 water bowls.
Every once in a while you’ll get one or two that are very agressive, this means you have to give them each their own enclosure. Then you also have to have enclosures for the babies that are not thriving, the ER or hospital tank. With these many babies, you’ll probably need more than just one.

That’s just some of the basics.

I would read "Breeding Beardies 101", down below by Heartmountain.

I was only wanted to know what you did, i asked if you kept them, gave them away or sold them. I did not come here saying i want to breed to sell. I know it takes alot of crickets and the profits are barely there. You guys are so ignorant to new people, i mean you guys really cant stop me from breeding if i want, i came to seek some info, if i didnt i could have them mate, feed the beardies 1 cricket a day and they all die, or i seek advise and if i do happen to breed i could do it properly. Im not in it for the money, i have the money to breed and raise 100 beardies if i wanted, but its really not worth it for me right now. looking for help vs bashing people is two different things and i thought the forums was for help and not ganging up and bashing. jeez you guys scare people, and then they go and do things without your help and end im killing animals instead of properly raising them. wow you reptile lovers are beyond insane

to answer yor question i live by chicaco, there are pet stores that want 49.95-119.00 per bd.myself i’ve been to pet expos that want 40 to 65 dollars apiece.but you have to realize baby beardies have to go through aleast one shed before you get rid of them, that can take any where from a month to monthand a half.in my expererince i will only buy when they are 6 to 6/12 inches long.that way you know they might last longer......if i’m wrong someone please tell me?

Dude, chill......I was just answering your questions. You wanted answers, I gave you answers. What did you wanna hear?????

Yes, Twisted.....they have to go through their first shed. It is their major stress and a lot of these babies just stop eating and die. They can go through their first shed between five and eight weeks old.

Sometimes earlier then that. ours average the first shed at 4-5 weeks, with some from the first clutch of 08 already shedding at 3 weeks. It helps to mark the babies on the back with a small dot of nail polish, it comes off with the first shed. When the dot is gone, you know the baby has shed. -Jay

It sounded to me like there was a possibility of breeding happening too. Edel was just making sure you were aware of all the ins and outs. I saw no attack on her part just the reality of what its like to breed. If you don’t like what she posted, don’t breed. She gave nothing but the straight facts, take it or leave it. The only attack I saw was on your part which is unfortunate as there are lots of people here willing to help with nothing but the dragons best interest in mind.

We are not here to hurt you. We are here to make sure you realise what is involved before you get neck deep and can’t get out. To me that shows that someone cares. That is what a forum is all about.
