 How do you do it?

Ok..I am not planning on breeding...this is a mere curiosity question.

The other day I was thinking about how a hatchling can eat 100 cricket per day. If you (breeders) have just one clutch of 20...thats 2000 crickets/day! Now serious breeders have more than one clutch going at a time...sometimes even the not so serious breeders do just because the female can lay once a moth after mating.

How do you do it? Where the heck do you get that many crickets from? I would go bankrupt feeding that many crickets to that many babies. I did the math. From birth to MINIMUM selling age...6 weeks. It would take 84 000 crickets to feed them. Assuming of course...they are eating 100/day each. (clutch of 20) Even if you could buy the crickets for 1 cent each...it would still cost you nearly $1000 to feed them...to the minimum selling age.

Now..please don’t get me wrong. I am not critizing anyone. I am truly curious. I admire the breeders out there who are able to feed multiple clutches! I am in awe of those able to feed one clutch. I just keep thinking...there’s got to be a trick to it. Are you able to breed that many crickets at home? To me that would be a massive undertaking in itself...but that seems to be the only way you could do it.

I also hope this post is a wake up call to backyard breeders who may not have thought about how they are feeding the cute babies...it was a rude awakening for me...and I’m not even planning on breeding!

Wow...I can’t imagine. I hope you get a good price on those crickets. Isn’t it like $25/1000? That would be close to $50/day wouldn’t it?

It’s very expensive. I probably barely break even selling beardies. That’s why I only incubate a few clutches per year and feed the rest of the fertile eggs off to my monitors. I enjoy breeding, but am not going to be swamped with 75 babies to feed daily bugs to for 6 or 7 months straight while some kids try to nickel and dime me down lower than a ridiculously low price already.

Yeah this is not the business to get rich off of. Our feeding costs peaked last year over $3000 a month. bulk silkworm eggs, and several large roach colonies cut the costs way down. We downsized to 1/5 th dragons we had when we sold wholesale, and high color only now. Havent peaked this year yet probably around 5-600 a month. The crickets we get wholesale for about 10 bucks per 1000. -Jay

I suppose I hadn’t thought about controlling the number of eggs that you hatch. I suppose if someone didn’t have a monitor to feed them to they could freeze them or something couldn’t they?

So there really is no trick to it? You guys really must do it for the love of it. I can’t see profit in it at all. Not unless you have some amazing quality dragons you can sell for a high price. I admire you all. I truly do.

Where do you get the crickets this cheap?
I love my dragons, and I have bought crickets on Southerncricket.com but its the best deal I can seem to find. Always on the look out for a better price though. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

He’s doing his job well then making you think he’s a big dragon, lol. That’s why they puff up like that and "beard" at you.

It’s a male. Father of the babies pictured above. He’s pretty normal at 22.5" long or so and 540 grams last I checked.
