 One Month Old Hatchlings Dying

My one month old babies were doing great (gaining weight, eating drinking). Now they don’t seem to be thriving quite as well. I have had two die in the past few days and others are weak and have sunken eyes. I have been giving them Pedialite and they are hanging in there but they don’t seem "right". I have them separated into 3 per enclosure. The ones that died were not in the same enclosure. They are being fed greens, slightly larger than pinhead crickets, and occasional mealworms. They have a small dish of fresh water and I mist them several times a day.

Can someone please give me some suggestions? I need to be pointed in the right direction. I don’t want to lose the entire clutch.

PS- The mother laid 16 eggs, all 16 hatched, this is the only problem I have encountered so far.

Thanks,

Jaime (barrswife)

First thing I would do is lose the mealworms, they can’t really digest them and the chitin will build up over time causing impaction and death. Have you been dusting with calcium and vitamins? Do they have a UVB light? How closely related are the parents? Here’s a recipe that may help you out

1 part repcal juvie (powdered in a coffee grinder)
1 part veal babyfood
add pedialite to make it soupy
nuke it for a minute or so
add more pedialite if needed
add powders
suck it up in a syringe (no needle) and put a drop on their nose. they should start licking it up, you may need to pry that first drop in so they get a taste of it.

That will keep them alive longer than just pedialite will. You may also consider having a necroscopy done on one of the babies to rule out disease, if you do this pay the extra few bucks and have adenovirus checked also. Good luck

The parents are not related at all. I will stop giving them the mealworms. I do dust the gut loaded crickets with Herpcare Cricket Dust. They do have UVB lighting. I just returned from the vets office (a friend of mine works there) and he wants me to bring in some fecal samples so they can test them. I will try the recipe you suggested. Thanks for the help, I’ll keep you informed!
