Hatchling Questions I’ve had three babies hatch so far and I have plenty of questions. One hatched on the 7th and the other two the day after. I put them in the incubator on moist paper towels for the first 24 hours. Then I transferred them to a rubbermaid container that is about five inches high, and I have the uvb light over the container. I was wondering if this was too close. I know it shouln’t be more than six inches away, but I wasn’t sure if this was too close. Also, it’s about 100-105 degrees on one side of the container. Is that hot enough? Also, I have chopped up greens in there although I don’t think they’re touching them, and I offer 1/4" crickets three times a day, but I don’t think they are eating anything. Is this normal? I thought maybe they were shy, so I threw three crickets in there, and left the room to see if they would eat them, and I came back and they were gone, but I don’t know if they jumped out of the container or they ate them. And finally, I have another rubbermaid container that is about ten inches high and alot bigger. How big should they be before I transfer them into this one? I guess that’s it for now. Thanks for answering all my questions. P.S. I just thought of another one. When I turn the lights out at night should I turn the uvb light out too?

Hatchling Questions UVB should be no more than 12" away, the closer the better so you’re fine there. Temps sound fine also. Transfer them to the deeper boxes when they get big enough to jump out of these ones, I can’t tell you an age but you’ll know when. And yes, lights out is all lights. Sean

Hatchling Questions Thanks for the answers. How about them eating? I haven’t seen them eat anything. How long does it take for them to eat? What I’ve been doing is putting in three crickets, once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and once right before the lights go out, and if they don’t eat them after ten minutes or so, I’ll take them out. Is this okay or should I try another approach? Thanks for all your help.

Hatchling Questions They’ll usually spend their first few days (up to a week) living off of their egg sack so they won’t really eat. After that watch out, they’re like garbage disposals. You’re feeding method seems fine. I’d back that last feeding up a bit though, they should have a cuople hours to digest with the lights on. Are you offering salads also?Sean

Hatchling Questions Right now I have a little plate of chopped up collard greens that are available to them at all times, but I haven’t seen them touch it. Except when they run through it trying to get away from the crickets. LOL. I am spraying them three times a day now, with the last one about a half hour before lights go out. Is this to soon? I don’t want them to get too chilly. Also, When I spray them, should I immediately change the paper towels, or should I take them out and spray them? I have noticed that they like to lick the side of the container when the water runs down. On a better note, I noticed this morning that they had pooped! So that means that they’re eating something right? Is it possible for them just to be shy, and not want to eat around me? (I know I wouldn’t feel comfortable eating with someone ten times my size hovering over me. LOL) Anyway, thanks for all the great advice. I look forward to much more!

Hatchling Questions I usually spray mine right on the paper towels, they dry out pretty quick so you don’t have to worry about the humidity thing. They may just be shy, it will take them a little while to get used to the big predator hanging over them watching. Who knows, maybe they think you’re gutloading them. I’d give it more time at the night spraying, around 1 or 2 hours would be good. You don’t want them all damp through the night, besides they could use about that long to digest before bed. Sean

Hatchling Questions You were absolutely right! They are little garbage disposals! Once they figured out that those little things were tasty, it didn’t matter who was in the room! Now, if I could only keep the crickets from going under the paper towels! LOL. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for the great advice, and hopefully it’ll be smooth sailing from now on!
