DIET: Prior to breeding and continuing through the season your female will need a special diet in order to minimize the physical stress on her body. The Eggs will take priority even if she has to draw the nutrients and minerals from her own bones and reserves. For this reason you should alter her diet to 50% greens and 50% protein(bugs), calcium dust daily and vitamin dust 3 times a week. Check out beautiful dragons for a color coded list of good foods to feed.DO NOT feed pinkies this is an old way of adding weight and is DANGEROUS. A safer alternative is to feed a few super worms or wax worms daily or even every other day, this will put the weight on almost the same as pinkies without the risks. (From Breeding 101 a few threads beI give a salad everyday and offer live prey everyday to my girls...they will eat if they want to, won’t eat if they do not...so...
Females can lay nonviable eggs if they have not been with a male. I have a big plastic bin that I use for a lay box that has 80 pounds of soil. Everyone has their lay bins diffrent but I don’t think a 20 gallon will allow much burrowing. I place the screen top across the top of my lay bin to allow for heat light while laying
If she does not want the eggs, she should freeze them.

Watch the fem,ale for egg binding and provide the best lay bin possible so she does not hold out to lay the eggs for better conditions. They can dig and burrow for days if the lay bin does not suit them.

Hope this helps...Let me know...Take care Beth

I use a tall 5 gallon bucket with about 6 inches of wet sand. Screen cover on top with a 60 watt bulb for heat. Works great for veiled chameleons too. Cindy

First I have never heard of a 5 gallon bucket...but whatever works does work...thats all u need...but I have to say that one of my female dragons dug for 2-3 days before I gave her the bin in the pics and then she let loose...I thought she would die from exhaustion but she did not...took 3 days after exhaustion to see her improving...just be sure that your female does not dig for days before youn realize that this is not what she wants...then change it...and change it...and hopefully u find the right laying circumstances for her well being... Take good xcare Beth

Beths pic is a perfect example of a good lay box. I did the same thing all three time my female has laid this year. I got the idea from your pic Beth so thanks for that. Also as long as the sand id moist and the temp is not to high or to low she should have no trouble laying in a bin like the one in the pic. As long as she can make a little cave she should be good.

Thanks Chris...and I have to now say I have no clue how a beardie lays in a 5 gallon bucket when my lay bin has 80 pounds of topsoil...I guess whatever works...but beware of the chance that egg binding will happen if she finds the lay situation not to her liking. Take care all, Beth

well I’ll try the bigger bin first and if she decides that she will only lay in a 5 gallon then I’ll let her but I’ll try the bigger one first
what is brumation? I have an iggy not a beardie my friend has the beardie so I have no idea about them or there terms figured I’d find out all that I can so the next time she calls I have answers for her questions she got the beardies for her sons thought they were both boys found out other wise lol, but its ok she just wanted boys so that she wouldnt have to worry about the eggs lol, ever since her girl beardie has gotten eggs the boy has been sluggish I guess the husbandry is all correct I’ve already gone through and made sure off that off of other forums and the beautiful dragons guide, I could go research this but I was just curios if it is normal for males to do this when theres a gravid female near?

Hi Calico!

Quote:

what is brumation?

This should awswer your question, it’s a thread I did a few months back when everyone was asking what was wrong with their beardies, LOL...

Once mature, {after one year of age}, Bearded dragons will usually go into a "shut down" period. They will become inactive, hidden in shelters, or laying on the ground and eating very little if at all. If raised indoors, babies hatched out in the summer will not have a shut down period until the following year, {at about 18 months of age}, but at times they may choose to sleep for a very short time, a few days...

During winter shut down, dragons must be kept at cooler temperatures, 60-70f at least, and no higher. If you cannot get to these temps, one thing you could do is place the tank on the floor to achieve cooler temps. Basking lights should be reduced to 75-80f, and left on only 8-10 hours a day, until you can completely shut them all off... Alot of people worry their dragons are getting sick during shut down, but it is quite normal for them to act this way in the winter months. Winter shut down can last from a few weeks to a five months. If a bearded dragon is healthy and paracite free, they will lose little to no weight during this period, and will remain in good condition, and will show no signs of disease, such as sunken eyes, gaping or twitching. One things that should be done befor shut down is to reduce, then eliminate food for the dragon about one week befor the onset of cooler temps. The owner can wait and observe the dragon closely, and then create shut down conditions, as soon as the dragon shows signs of reduction in activity and food intake.

At the end of winter shut down, you will notice a shift in behaviors following the increase in heat and lighting. They will return to normal as soon as they start to bask and eat again...If they wake and refuse to eat, it is quite normal as at times it sometimes takes a few days for then to eat again...

Nancy :)
