What are good reasons to breed BD?

I am trying to think of good reasons to breed bearded dragons while not thinking about "making money". There are so many bd breeders these days the market is flooded with them.

Well ifyou cant find any positive reasons then by all means dont bread lol. I am going to breed for the pure fact of taking care of them, and I think it will be really cool to have hatchlings. I plan on not making money I plan to keep some of them and give some to my friends.

Just incubate 5-10 eggs and freeze the rest. The problem is the sheer number of eggs and babies people produce is ridiculous. Just do a handful for the experience and enjoyment, not worrying about selling babies and feeding/housing so many - that’s just overwhelming to most.

My reasons are for the experience of it, and just plain curiosity of what my dragons will produce. I also want to keep a few of the nicest babies as pets or possible future breeders. Another reason is just because I find the whole process absolutely fascinating! I want to watch the whole process from introducing the dragons, to the mating process, to hatching, to raising the babies.

Are your dragons normals, or some kind of colorful morph? If they are just normals... your right, your going to have a very hard time getting rid of them. If they are a nice or popular color variation, you can sell them, but it might take a while cause like you said, the market is flooded with them! If you just want to do it for the experience, you can sell the babies for way cheaper than the normal going rate just to help pay for the cost of supplies/food to raise the babies until they are able to be sold. This is what I plan to do. I plan to keep 1 or 2 that I find the best looking (holdback quality), and sell the rest for a highly discounted price. You could also find a pet store that deals with reptiles and tell them of your breeding plans and see if they would be interested in buying bulk quantities from you for a good price. If the are colorful... I don’t see why they wouldn’t. The pet store I used to work at specialized in reptiles and would buy from local "hobby" breeders sometimes. I would try to make sure they all go to experienced reptile keepers if possible for obvious reasons though.

Like said above... if you can’t think of a good reason to do it... and aren’t 100% sure that you even WANT to do it... then just don’t. We don’t need anymore homeless or abused animals. MAKE SURE you PLAN, and are prepared to keep and care for them for a while, because you might not be able to get rid of all of them very quickly. Make sure you have all the necessary equipment and finances to be able to separate every dragon into their own enclosures (at least all the males) in case you end up having to hold on to them for a while.
