 Hatchling beardie won’t eat

I have a hatchling beardie, the only one to survive the clutch due to inubation failure, and it will not eat. It’s about two weeks old and hasn’t eaten anything I’ve tried crickets, roaches, mealworms and a few veggies but nothing seems to grab its interest. I’m hoping someone can give me a few tips on inticing it somehow. Thanks

Hey,

Get yourself some chicken and veggies baby food. Put some on the tip of a spoon, and place a bit of it onto the beardie’s nose. It will take a while for him to go for it, but don’t give up. One he starts lapping it up, leave the spoon up to his nose and he should go on until he is full. Not too much to start with.....feed every three to four hours. Keep trying the crickets and greens every other day or so, but don’t stop the aby food until he starts eating on his own.

Make sure you keep him hydrated.

Thanks a ton I’ll pick some up tomorrow morning. Do you think it would be better to put it back in the incubator till its eating,to keep a for sure constant temp and humidity?

How long ago did it hatch? If it just hatched a few days ago, some don’t normally eat right away.

I would just leave him in the tank......how long has he been in the enclosure?

He’s going on 3 weeks since it hatched,I put it in the enclosure 2 days after the yolk sac was completely absorbed so its been in there about 2 weeks now. I got the baby food but its not wanting it yet,got my fingers crossed.

Hey,

Yea, don’t put him in the incubator again. Just leave him in the enclosrue.

Be patient......it takes them a long while to even start lapping it up. Put a little dot of it on his nose and see what he does. They hate stuff on their nose, so when he starts lapping it up to lick it off, place the spoon with the food in front of his tongue.

Good luck.....let us know how it goes.

Hey,

That’s Awesome....keep it up.

I had three in my last clutch who stopped eating. The one that was the first to stop, was the one to refuse the baby food......she was the one to survive. Keep it up. And please, keep us updated. I know am not on the breeding forum that much, but I will come back periodically to check.

Great Going!!!!!

I got him to take a few pieces of collards today. I put 2 pinhead crickets in the tank with it and he was being extremely curious so hopefully they will be gone in the morning.I also left some collards in there to just in case. It has definitely started to gain some strength as its trying to bite when I pick it up to feed and it has been running all over the enclosure. I put a piece of tile upside down under the basking lamp to give it a little higher belly heat when it basks. Thanks again for all the help and I will keep posting as it goes :).

Well its a bad day for me:). I lost my baby today. Thanks for all your help,I don’t think i had much of a chance with the incubation problems and him not eating for that short while. Sadly yesterday evening I really saw a huge turnaround as it was perky, running around chasing crickets, and eating veggies on its own, this is the last thing I expected to find today. Anyways here is a pic of it from last night...

Ya it sucks:(,I tend to get attached to animals I have to nurse but I will not make the mistake of incubating my eggs in my reptile room, the incubator will be here in my bedroom from now on where I can catch a problem when it happens not the next day. I’m guessing it had to do with the incubation problems seeing as only two eggs survived until hatching time and one was underdeveloped and the other was this poor guy. Thanks for the help and now I know to use baby food it really got him eating pretty quickly, don’t know why I didn’t think of it I used to have to do it for baby iguanas.

Hey,

I’m that way too. I get too attached too quickly. Unfortunately, sometimes we have to go throught these things to get prepared and learn and grow. I too, have had my share of dead babies and dead eggs. It’s not a fun thing to go through, that’s for sure.

The next clutch will be perfect, you just wait and see.
