Just bought a beardie and I need some info

Hello. I just went into a local pet store tonight and I felt so sorry for one beardie that was there that I had to buy him. The guy working there said that when they got him in the breeder told them that he was born deformed, he has stubs for front legs and his tale is only half the length it should be and curved upwards. He also said that he had him in with another dragon and he had to seperate them because they were fighting and he got a little scratched up. First of all the guy working didn’t know crap about reptiles, I told him how to sex beardies, how to calm them down, and that you couldn’t keep two males in a tank together under normal circumstances. I already have one beardie who is healthy and spoiled! I would really like to nurse Lucky, thats what we named him, back to health. Other than really soft bedding, a good diet, and plenty of calcium, I have no idea what else I should do. His front legs are somewhat red and patchy, probably where he was fighting, but his tail is okay. If anyone has any advice please let me know. Thanx.

he probably got the stubs from fighting cause when dragons are kept together and not fed well they’ll cannabalize

hope he pulls through but he has a low chance

Ah I’ve pulled them through worse. If there are open wounds put neosporin on them and a bandage if needed. Watch for infection and if you notice any a trip to the vet for baytril will be needed. I’d also run it by the vet for a fecal and a checkup so that you have a baseline to start with. Good luck, if you need any help just ask.

Thanks for your reply Ace13. I thought that at first as well but one arm stub is actually shorter than the other, almost up to the joint, and it is actually thicker. The one that is longer is thinner and at the end of it becomes indented. I think the guy was being honest with me about him being born that way because his scales are not really all that torn. He’s not that old either. Maybe 3 monthes. His weight is good, hind legs look healthy as well. I only got him for $20 but I knew that he didn’t stand a chance in the pet store with people that only viewed him as something else to feed and try to sell. Unfornately many pet stores are like that and it makes me sick. I’m going to pick up some spray vitamins for him tomorrow, but what kind of bedding would you recommend? Thanks once again for the reply.

for babys keep him on newspaper that way since hes so small he won’t get bedding in his mouth also newspaper would allow for easy fecal sample to be taken but for soft i would use sand but be sure to have a dish buried in the sand so you can add crickets and they won’t go into the sand and have you beardie swallow it

Thanks everyone for replying. Yes he can walk, in fact he makes up for what he doesn’t have pretty well. He’s got a really good appetite. He ate as soon as he warmed up after I got him in his new tank. I even put him in a shallow pan of warm water to bath him and he’s a good swimmer. I’m just concerned about what I can do to help him grow as well as he can and heal any damage that was done due to the fighting. He’s an active little beardie so far, I just want to make sure he makes it. I used to have two adult beardies and unfornately I had to sell both of them. I just got a sandfire about 3 monthes ago and he’s doing great. Lucky, is my new baby though and they no way I could have left him at that pet store to die. Thanks to all who have replied. Any suggestions on what type of bedding would be best. One of my friends suggested corn cob bedding but I’ve never heard of it, he used it for his pet boa.

Ya, avoid the corncob. If it molds at all it can be very toxic (ergot mold). Newpaper is a good choice, shelfliner would provide a little more cushoning though. I’ve rescued several in similar conditions, they really don’t ever let it slow them down. I’ve got one right now with only 1 good leg (still missing the toes on that one) the rest are either amputated at either the shoulder or elbow areas (his names stumpy lol). He got this way because the breeder didn’t know what they were doing and overcrowded the clutch and then didn’t feed them enough on top of it. They of course started eating each other and he showed up with a box full of half dead dragons at my door. As the amputations heal the scales grow over them but until then really watch for infections (I had some of these guys on baytril injections for 3 months while they healed).
