 Substrate question for my hatchlings...

Anyways, I know sand is bad, especially the calci stuff, but yesterday I went to the store, and saw the alfalfa pellets for a use of a substrate. If they eat it they just digest it normally like they woukd eat it anyways. Would these be safe for my babies. The thing with paper towels is, that the crickets and babies go under them and its very annyoing, and they always get all wrinkly, and fold up when they dry after you spray the hatchlings with water. Should the pellets be good? Anybody?

your local pet store should have (or be able to get) some crushed calcium substrate. alfalfa pellets are more for rabbits. i’ve never used it on lizards. doesn’t sound that bad, tho. hmm... but i think you should stick to something specifically for reptiles - oh, and stay away from wood chips - especially cedar.

Nicklldo what you are talkking about is bad also. I find the easiest thing with babies is no substrate at all. Nothing can hide and nothing gets wet when you mist them except them.

I also do not use substrate for my hatchlings. I find it is not difficult to wipe the cage out daily with a damp paper towel.

Use linoleum. That is what i use for all my reptlies. it is easy to clean and if you can get different colors and what-not for the wildlife look.
Crickets can’t get under it and when you spray, it drys fast and easy!
