More help on Eggbound female! so I’ve been giving my female warm baths and have been introducing her to my laying box. Nothing has happened yet. She hasn’t even started digging practice holes. I usually take my females to the box when they start running around the cage all frantic and stuff, but this one has had eggs for such a long time with no running around. She also stopped eating about 2 weeks ago, but nothing. As far as I know she should be laying about now. If I am doing something wrong, please tell me!!! Thanks all who helped on my last post. More help on Eggbound female! Put her in the lay box and leave her there, not in and out for short periods. If you really think she’s overdue then take her in for an ultrasound, that will tell you if the eggs are blocked up. Pitocin is a possibility but be careful if your vet wants to go this route, it can have very bad side effects and should only be used as a last resort before surgery. Good luck, let us know what happens.

More help on Eggbound female! Forget what I said above and read what I said in Nails thread, Vet ASAP. If it’s septicemia you don’t have a whole lot of time to wait and see, better safe than sorry....Again good luck

More help on Eggbound female! With my last female, she didn’t lay for over 5 weeks... could that mean that this one will do the same? And also, how much would it cost to do all that at the vet? I know that it might vary a bit, but what do you think? Im kinda low on money right now, with school and all... thanks for all your help hartmountain and nails.

More help on Eggbound female! Go ahead and let her try for the night but I’d be getting a vet appt. in the morning if she doesn’t do anything. What I suspect has happened is that the eggs got stuck, either to large to pass the pelvic bone or other reasons, when this happens the eggs can rupture internally and causes a septic infection/internal poisoning. That would explain the lethargic behavior. Hey, I hope I’m wrong and I’m not saying it’s for sure but it’s not something to wait on. If it is, it will require surgery with anesthesia which gives her about a 50/50 chance just on that, reptiles don’t take anesthesia well. It’s a tough decision you may have to make so I’m just trying to prepare you a little not scare you. Good luck

More help on Eggbound female! Each female is different but in general it’s 20-30 days, what one does doesn’t indicate what another will do or even the same one will do another time. If it does require surgery I’d say you’re looking at between $1000-2000, like I said I hope I’m wrong.

More help on Eggbound female! Hopefully you’re still on. There would be no altournative other than surgery if the wort happens? I cant spend that much on this lizard. I love her, but I cant spend that much. Is there anything besides surgery that can do any good?

More help on Eggbound female!
Hey guys, one more thing. If it is that disease, do the eggs get smashed and destroyed? Because i can feel them in her stomach and they are nice and firm. I dont know if that makes any differance at all, but PLEASE say it does! Oh i just dont want to have to make a decision of 2grand or her... Please say that its a good sign. Thanks, no matter what happens. You guys ROCK.

More help on Eggbound female! Worst case scenario, no, surgery would be the only alternative or humane euthanasia. Milder case may be able to be treated with pitocin and antibiotics. Best case she’s just having a bad day and will lay on her own with no problems (fingers crossed). There are several different degrees/stages that this could be at but the lethargy is what worries me the most, it’s a classic sign of toximia/septicemia, even with treatment the odds aren’t great but the sooner you figure out whats going on the better and when I say sooner hours can make a difference with this. I’m not trying to be cold/heartless about this or scare you I’m just trying to get you prepared so you can make a logical decission. Some of my animals I would go through this with, most I wouldn’t, you’re going to have to decide for yourself what you do.

More help on Eggbound female! when you say lethargic, do you mean how she isn’t very active? because it’s true that she doesn’t move a ton during the day, but when I put her in the bath and stuff, she runs around. She is usually alert and active, but sleeps some. Most do i presume. my male sleeps more than she does. I hope any of this makes any difference in your diagnosis.

More help on Eggbound female! Ya, you said in one post that she wasn’t eating (that doesn’t bother me, it’s normal for gravid females), sleeping all the time and not moving much like she wanted to brumate that combined with that she’s a couple weeks late. Did I get you right on all that?

I water her and all my other dragons every day. She wont eat the greens or crix though. Should I try feeding her other stuff?

More help on Eggbound female! No, it’s pretty normal for them to go off their food while gravid. I guess it’s your call, you know her better than anyone. If you thinks she’s getting bad definitely see a vet. If you think she’s just acting fat and preggo then hang in there and see what happens. Just to be clear on something though, how late is she?

More help on Eggbound female! well ok, here’s the whole scoop. I got her from a local guy, about 2 months ago who said that she had just laid a cluch and probably wouldn’t lay again for a while. I was discouraged to learn that she probably wouldn’t lay, but I thougth there might be a chance. After a week and a half, something strange happened. She seemed to lose a LOT of weight overnight. Quite strange. I called the guy and he said look for eggs, so i did, but nothing. strange....... oh well. Anywayz, I then kept feeding her and supplimenting her because she kept packing it on, and getting quite fat. I would feel her stomach about once a week, and felt definite eggs about 3 weeks ago. she was still eating then. So then she stopped 2 weeks ago and started basking a whole lot. exactly what my other female did before she layed. I waited for her to be ready to lay, watched her to see if she started to get frantic, but nothing. She hasn’t eaten but is still drinking. And this is where we sit. Hope this helps... Sorry for all of your time that I have wasted, I know that there are probably alot more people that are in worse situations than I am in. Thanks a ton!

More help on Eggbound female! Ok, so she’s probably around 4 weeks assuming you felt the eggs as they were forming the shells and not too far after. Not as bad as what it sounded like before. Any digging or pacing/restless behavior yet? If that’s the case then no reason to freak yet, do watch for all of those signs that we’ve been going over though because it could still happen. Especially keep an eye on her alertness, fat and pregnant is one thing. Like I said I’m not worried about the food, it’s normal just make sure to have plenty of goodies for her after she lays (super worms will help pack the weight back on quick). Keep with the baths and she’ll need that lay box real soon (when you see the pacing and digging behavior start). Don’t worry about "wasting" my time lol, it’s better to be figure out what’s going on than to sit around worrying.

More help on Eggbound female! ok, so Ive been giving her warm baths for 3 days, 15 minutes at a time. I let her stay over the night in the laying box last night, but with no success. Could I just need to wait for a while? Is the drinking a good sign? I will keep up the baths and putting her in the box. And also, box question. Do they like to have a cover on the box? Will she be more willing to lay if there is a cover? I have a heat lamp on it, and I make sure that it is moist enough. Keep telling me what I am doing wrong. Thanks Heartmountain!!! I’ll stay hopefull. Cross your fingers for me!

More help on Eggbound female! My lay boxes have covers but half the lid is cut out on the opposite side of the mound so that I can wiggle a light reflector in their and point it at the mound. You could also just find a board or something and cover the end that the mound is on, some do lay better and feel more secure about it when their is a top. From what we figured out last night she’s probably at about 4 weeks, maybe 5 so it should be an anytime thing but sure you may have to wait, this whole thing is one big wait lol (wait to lay, wait and wait and wait to hatch, wait some more until they’re old enough to start selling, wait even longer to see what your holdbacks turn out like, wait to repeat the whole process again lol).

More help on Eggbound female! Most will still drink, some won’t, it all depends on them. Give her some time but keep an eye on her, if you start seeing any symptoms of eggbound definitely get her in. I can’t tell you how long exactly since we’re really just guessing on the due dates, sorry.

More help on Eggbound female! Oh and not just for you but anyone else reading, if you’re that attached to your dragons then don’t breed them (I know you didn’t do it intentionally and that you got her that way). Even the most experienced breeder will still lose dragons in breeding accidents and complications associated with it, I lost 6 just last season.

More help on Eggbound female! Heartmountain, One last (hopefully, whew) question. If it was a lesser eggbinding problem, then how much would it cost for the stuff that you talked about? That tonic stuff that would clean her out? I’m taking her tommarow to the vet, and I kind of want a heads up on how much it might cost. Thanks,
-Will

More help on Eggbound female! Pitocin isn’t that much, I don’t know how much your vet will charge it can vary a lot but the actual drug isn’t too much. It is a last resort before surgery though, side effects can include massive hemoraging. A quick ultrasound will tell you how large the eggs are compared to the pelvic opening, it will let you know if she’s bound or not. Hopefully it’s all good news.
