 My eggs are hatching HELP!!!!

It is 6:30a.m. and I have one egg completely hatched and three with their heads popping out. I have know idea what to do and could use some help. How do I set up their new tank. Do they need the same heat as my big beardies? What do I use for the ground? do they need a basking area something to stand on or just a heat lamp? Water bowl? When do I feed them? Do they sleep alot when they are first born? Any advice in succesfully raisng these baby beardies will be very helpful. I am so excited I don’t want anything to go wrong.
Thankyou Jared

 My eggs are hatching HELP!!!!

Congratulations Jared,

Well you definately need to set up a new tank, you can use newspaper for flooring, a heatlamp for warmth, uvb light, and pinhead crickets for food.

The babies may be a bit sluggish for the first couple of days and may not take food for a couple of days...I just made sure I gave them a nice warm bath every day to keep them hydrated. In some cases where I had no access to pinheads right away I bought a fruit fly culture from the pet shop.

So yes set their cage up the same as their parents, they will sleep more, and just make sure you don’t cook them under the heat lamp. And start ordering your pinhead crickets.

Good Luck

Yes, make sure you don’t cook them, but baby beardies often prefer higher basking spots than adults do. Most of my hatchlings enjoyed a basking spot somewhere between 110 and 120 where most adults like it closer to 105 in my experience.

You might need to fiddle with the height of your heat lamp and basking branches until you find a temp where they are happy to hang out for around half the day without gaping and moving away. If they are spending all day in the basking area that’s a sign the temp is too low for them.

I offer greens right away to hatchlings and most take to them easily, often before they get started on crickets. You’ve got a great opportunity to get them off to a good start on salad eating when they are still tiny and tired from all that hard work hatching out.

 My eggs are hatching HELP!!!!

Before I left for work I put paper towels down for the floor of the tank and thats all I have in there. I took my grown beardies heat lamp and u.v. light and put them on the babies tank till I get home to buy another set. Thats all I have done. Should I have someone put some greens in the tank and if so what kind are best for babies. I have no object in the tank for the beardies to bask on the will be on the floor just under the light. Will that be o.k. till I get home? Should I put a water bowl (small) in the cage right away also? Are the beardies smart enough to know if it is to hot to go to the other side of the tank? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I just don’t want to see anything bad happen. I am very excited

 My eggs are hatching HELP!!!!

I just got home from work and now I have three baby beardies. I bought a U.V. light that was 8.5 for dessert lizards is that too much for babies? They seem to like to kick it on the other side of the tank away from the heat lamp. I checked the temperature and at the basking spot it was 110. Do I need to put them under the heat light when I see them on the other side or just let nature take its place. Also one of my babies is laying in her little water dish. Is that normal? Where can I find pinhead crickets? How often do you feed baby beardies? Any other pointers that I may not be thinking about would also be helpful. Sorry I have so many questions, i just don’t want anything wrong to happen. Thankyou for your time.

No, that’s not too much light for babies at all. Just let them do their own thermoregulation, there’s no need to put them under the light. You can try moving the light an inch or two higher to see if they prefer a lower basking temp, though.

Be careful about asking for pinhead crickets. Many petshops sell their smallest as "pinheads" but technically pinheads are only a day or two old and roughly the size of dandruff which is too small for a hatchling beardie. You can order 1/8 or 1/4 inch crickets from most cricket breeders over the internet and they arrive in 2 or 3 days time. It’s a good idea to order from a place near where you live, especially during the winter or the hottest days in summer so they won’t die off during shipping. www.herpfood.com might be pretty near where you live.

I like to buy plastic shoeboxes from the dollar store and use them as feeding stations for baby beardies so everybody eats alone and they are less likely to nip their siblings’ toes and tails.

Yep Eyespy is right. Pinheads are too small. I usually start with 1/4 inch crickets. I think I may of stated pinheads, but I was wrong. If you breed something like gold dust geckos then you need pinheads.

Summer is a tough time a year because that is when I get most dead ones because the mail dude is driving around all day with them. Either get them delivered to your post office or ask a petshop to order you a box of a 1000 1/4 inch crickets.

Good luck

I was wondering if it is O.K. to use outdoor carpet like they sell at home depot as flooring for the cage i put my baby beardies in or if that could harm them in any way?

Beardies need a core body temperature of 103 in order to digest their food. If you keep babies at 95 they risk having their egg yolks going bad in their bellies. The only time you want to keep a beardie at a lower temp is if the yolk sac has not been fully absorbed yet and is still sticking out of their belly.
