Your dragon is beautiful!! But, I’m sure many of us would like to help you make some changes to your set up. Can you post a picture of the whole set up?

The first thing you need to do is toss out that substrate and replace it with paper towels, newspaper, reptile carpet, tiles, or shelf liner.

What are your temps and what do you use to measure them?
What type of UVB bulb do you have and how far from it can the dragon get?
How large is the tank and how old is your dragon? Where did you get him?
Have you had a stool sample checked at all?
Has he been pooping regularly?
Are you dusting the crickets daily with d3 free calcium powder?
What greens/veggies do you provide?

Here are some photos of set ups I have (all using reptile carpet):

Hope those are helpful!!

Here is a reply to questions posted late last night. Thanks for all the great tips!

Q: What is that substrate he/she is on?
A: Ground English Walnut Shells from www.zilla-rules.com

Q: What are your temps and what do you use to measure them?
A: It stays between 88 and 92 and we use a Liquid Crystal Thermometer from www.exo-terra.com

Q: What type of UVB bulb do you have and how far from it can the dragon get?
A: We use Repti Glo 10.0 UVB bulb from www.exo-terro.com and it is now about 6 to 8 inches from his new log

Q: How large is the tank ?
A: Size 20 Long 30x12x12

Q: How old is your dragon?
A: His birthday is unknown, he/she has been apart of the family since early Feb’08

Q: Where did you get him?
A: From a local Pets Plus

Q: Have you had a stool sample checked at all?
A: No I have not yet.

Q: Has he been pooping regularly?
A: Yes, but to me it looks like he is pooin out most of the cricket he ate the night before…is that normal?

Q: Are you dusting the crickets daily with d3 free calcium powder?
A: No I was told by a friend to gut-load them with Calcium Plus from www.t-rexproducts.com

Q: What greens/veggies do you provide?
A: I provide fresh greens daily and peas every other day.

Not I also have a Heat Glo 100w light from www.exo-terro.com for him/her as well. He has a critter cavern, the crickets use it the most, they love to hide under it. LOL And as you can see from the Before and after shots today I have added 2 new blocks of heart stone { locally they cost 85 dollars for the 2 chuncks I have } and a log { free } for him to climb. I am learning as I go and welcome all advice even if its bad… LOL

Now for the PIX….

Ok very nice that you gave us all of this information b/c about 3/4 of it is wrong!! BUT dont you worry I will help you right now!! I am gonna repost your answers with our questions and answer them and tell you why this is what it is!! Please take this and use is immediatly!!

Q: What is that substrate he/she is on?
A: Ground English Walnut Shells from www.zilla-rules.com

New answer: Ground walnut shells ARE THE WORST for a BABY dragon and any age dragon. Reason: they lick their environment and when they do that, they will ingest these little non digestable shells. The shells will then stay in his intestines and BLOCK him and eventually slowly kill him!! Please take it out RIGHT now!! Go put some paper towels in there.. just for RIGHT now.. and you can keep them in there his whole life too! If you want something more suitable.. go to a local rock store or lowes or home depot and get some hard tile such as slate or seramic tile. Make sure you wash well with bleach and hot water..scrub it..then back it at 300-350 degrees for 20-30 minutes to sanitize more! If you dont want that..then use newspaper, paper towles. repti carpet..something the baby cant ingest!! PLEASE!!! Here is a perfect example that they will be just fine on paper towles and slate! This is the "cool side"

Q: What are your temps and what do you use to measure them?
A: It stays between 88 and 92 and we use a Liquid Crystal Thermometer from www.exo-terra.com

New answer... your baby NEEDS to have a cool side and hot side.. the cool side is where he will run to get "cooled off" that is supossed to stay at 80 degrees or mid 80’s. The hot end is where he needs to have a basking log, rock or whatever.. that needs to be at th minimum.. 105-120!! It sounds hot but to answer another one of your questions why his food doesnt look digested..is b/c his temps are WAY too low! So, change that immediatly too! Here is a pic of my cage and you can see the basic setup and how the wire (probe) is on the slate..that measures his "basking" spot..which STAYS at 107-113 (for my dragon) all are different..this will be a trial and error..

Q: What type of UVB bulb do you have and how far from it can the dragon get?
A: We use Repti Glo 10.0 UVB bulb from www.exo-terro.com and it is now about 6 to 8 inches from his new log.

New answer... COILS are BAD for beardies...they cause eye problems so please take that back and go get a LONG TUBE UVB that is aeither one or the other..reptisun 10 OR the reptiglo 8 TUBE! IF by chance you cant find it in your pet store..then return your coil (if you still can) and go onto LLLreptile.com and go down to reptile supplies and click on the "lights and uvb bulb" button. Go down till you see the reptisun 10 long tube 24". They are only 20 bucks and last for 6-12 months. At the pet store they are 50 bucks.. your choice! Then for the fixture you can go to Walmart and go to the lighting section and get the "under cabinet fixture" make sure you can take the plastic piece off to put your uvb in it. They ae about 9 bucks! so.. please do this asap too!!

Q: How large is the tank ?
A: Size 20 Long 30x12x12

New answer: good for a baby!! When he gets just to be about 12 inches long you need to switch to a 36Lx18Wx18D...minimum...

Q: How old is your dragon?
A: His birthday is unknown, he/she has been apart of the family since early Feb’08

Q: Where did you get him?
A: From a local Pets Plus

New answer: being he is from a pet store.. I would take a poopsample in to a vet and make sure he isnt ridden with parasites... 90% of reptiles from pet stores are! Just to be on the safe side. That will cost about 15-30 bucks depending on your location. Make sure the poop is fresh and wet..pick it up w/a plastic bag and refidgerate if needed till you take it n. Also, if you get a dewromer..make sure you get the acidofilis (not sure exactly how to spell it) but yo ucan get it at a store it helpe the dewormer not tear their stomach up and helps keep their appetite while you treat them!!

Q: Have you had a stool sample checked at all?
A: No I have not yet.

Q: Has he been pooping regularly?
A: Yes, but to me it looks like he is pooin out most of the cricket he ate the night before…is that normal?

I answered this above.. raise your temps! :)

Q: Are you dusting the crickets daily with d3 free calcium powder?
A: No I was told by a friend to gut-load them with Calcium Plus from www.t-rexproducts.com

New answer: that doesnt really help that much.. go out to the pet store and get 3 different dusts. One, get a calcium dust that has NO VitD3 in it..I have Jurassical, It will say on the jar/container, NO VitD3 and NO phrosphurus.. or phrosphurus free.. Second dust, get the "reptivite" with VitD3 in it. It is white as well as the regular calcium. Third dust.. get a multivitamin that is like a grey color...
Now how to feed them... the calcium regular one is every day every feeding which should be 2-3x a day! Make the insect ghost white! The second dust should be given once a week. The third should be given 2-3x a week. If you are confused ask me and I’ll help you!

Q: What greens/veggies do you provide?
A: I provide fresh greens daily and peas every other day.

Good job! Make sure they are the space between his eyes only and they can range from collards, dandelion greens, musturd greens, butternut squash, cactus pad or leaf... and then the insects should be silkworms, lobster roaches (which these two put on great weight) and then crix..all which need to be the spac between his eyes!! And you feed him like I stated above..2-3x a day for 15 minutes at a time..and as many insects as he wants..within that time. Dont feed him mushrooms or onions for they are toxic. There are some others too.

Good luck with your baby! And please go get these things changed for the sake of his LIFE and well-being and your sake of not loosing a precious lil cutie like him!

Thanks chris..

And to babyroadrunner... I have noticed 2 other issues. The red bulb you need to take out and put that basking light down more. Also, I dont know if I mentioned but you need a uvb bulb..long tube. reptisun10 or reptiglo 8 tube only..not coils! Go online to LLLreptile.com and get the 24 inch or 36 inch (whatever the length of your cage is) tube uvb and they are 20 bucks..then you need the fixture...

Also, those crickets are too big for your beardie.. he might eat them, but they can impact him, get "pinheads" or just small ones. Those look large. Make sure when you go to the pet store you ask for small or pinheads...

I hope he is doing well and you have changed the other stuff around..havent heard back from ya!!

Not only that, but as he is trying to poop them out, they will tear out his intestinte.

a warning on repticarpet if ya get the frayed kind ya need to take a sodering iron to the edges or it will cause tiny cuts inbetween the toes and lead to infections ,also tile will cause toe issues with your beardie later on in life (it basicly is slowy breaking them cause they have curved toes and tile will cause them to go strait).

gutloading can work ya just need to be sure that they are loaded at least 24 hours prior to feeding (if ya get crix from the store powder em cause gutloading crix is a pain but like roachs they are easy to gutload).

for a baby the best possable substrait is plan old paper towels they can shred em they are soft and not razor sharp like repti carpet and its very easy to change and monitor your babies defication.

as for adults ill get alot of flameing for reccomneding this but very well washed masons sand works wonders (bearderd dragons will and like to dig).

as for me ive kept 2 now for over a year not a single issue one from hatchling one from juvi i currently have a full grown and 2 sub adults the female and male are actively breeding.

also just a tidbit about the sand.
bearded dragons live in the wild with tons of sand they dont get impaction then why would they in captivity just a thought.

I had kitty litter and it seemed to work fine but then i changed it to reptile carpet- NOW Eddie wants to start digging but of course he cant on the carpet- I am having second thoughts on the carpet now-
Maybe one can may a sandplaypit on the one side of the cage?

Anyone else done that before- a kiddies sandplaypit for your "kid"?

actually in their natural habitat they live on mostly hard clay and sometimes they hit a few sand splotches.
but you know what?
they only live for a fraction of the time in the nature than in captivity.
