Please don’t use all caps, it’s very hard to read!

Anyway, what are you looking for in a pet? How much work do you want to do, how much money do you want to spend, and how much have you researched the two? Some people prefer geckos, others prefer dragons.

Beardie, Beardie, BEARDIE! As long as you know what to get, and how to care for them, bearded dragons make exelent pets!
Ok, so here is a list of nessessary supplies, and cost.

20-50 gallon tank (20min for baby, larger for adult)- 30-60ish $
Repticarpet (NO SAND!)- 10 $
Basking log, or branch- 5 $
Hiding place- 5 $
Food dish- 3 $
Water dish- 3$
DIGITAL thermometer- 10 $
And you will need a heat light fixture- 15$
and NEED UVB lighting- 50$ (bulb and fixture)
Calcium dust- 4$
No d3 dust- 4$

And of course food. Aduts need about 80% vegies in their diet, and 20% protein, like crickets, waxworms or phoenix worms.
So weekly this will cost you MABEY 10$?

You can buy a baby dragon for about 50$ or less. However, you need to get them from a breeder, or someone selling one, because the petstores animals are... well... less than healthy...

Plus, you will want to take a fecal sample to a vet once you first take your little guy home. This is not very costly.

So, as a total, it will cost you about 200 or so dollars give or take.

GET A BEARDIE! :P

Mike1998, im going to assume that you are only 10 assuming you where born in 98. But please try not to make post like that. The person who made the original post is obviously trying to get some help, and when you make long post with nothing on it just waste my time and everyone elses. Thanks!

Bearded dragons make excellent pets, but are also a little harder and more expensive to care for than leopard geckos. Leos take up far less space and have pretty easy requirements (10 gal tank, no UVB, under tank heater, digital therm, and three hides). So, if you are up for setting up a bigger enclosure and spending a lot more money, go for a beardie!

Here are some set ups (1st is three hatchling cages, second is a 20gal juvenile cage, third is my 7 year old female’s cage.

Lol, those two people are one and the same.

Yes, it would be helpful to know what you know about their care so we can help you get all set up and ready BEFORE you get one!!

also they need the sand

Nope, they need a solid substrate like rough tile, reptile carpet, paper towel, or non adhesive shelf liner.

If you’re lucky, you might spend that initially (you might want to double it though) but are you thinking about how much upkeep costs a month? Baby’s can eat tons of crix a day (Izzy would eat upwards of 100) plus the cost of salad and supplies. You’ll need to buy expensive supplements and change the UVB every 6 months. What about the potential vet bills, will you be ready for them?

You should not use sand in the bottom of the cage, and neither should your brother. Reptile carpet, tile, paper towels, and newspaper are all much less expensive, safer, and easier to clean options. Your dragon could die from ingesting the sand and becoming impacted (no, they cannot digest sand, no matter what the bag says).

You also need to add a digital thermometer, 40 gallon breeder tank/screen top, water dish, d3 free calcium powder, cricket gut load, and a reptisun 10.0 or reptiglo 8.0 36" UVB bulb to your list.

Good luck! Post pictures of your set up before you get the dragon to make sure everything is right for him.

Not going to start a debate over sand or no sand. But thats even worst then regular sand turns to paste in the stomach. With it turns causes impaction. Thats it on that subject .....

I agree, the wood chips will tear up the insides of your dragon when he tries to pass it after he has ingested it.

Go with a solid substrate. Tile, paper towels, newspaper, repti carpet, non adhesive shelf liner.

Tile is the best looking, the cheapest and the easiest to clean. Not only that, but the dragons love it and it keeps the heat really good.

Sounds good Mike. You might suggest to your brother to take out the sand and lay in some cool looking tiles instead. You should DEFINITELY be using tile or another solid substrate for your first beardie. The first pics here are mine, the others I found on the web. Hope they help! Note that the smaller cages have hatchlings and juveniles in them, an adult beardie needs a minimum 40 gal breeder tank. As for decorating, you should do it minimally. Dragons need a lot of clear space to run around, so don’t clutter up the cage with a bunch of stuff.

And these are from the web, some are examples of tiles you could use that look more natural.

My leos are alot cheaper.....Electricity bills and food are alot more expensive with my beardie but they are both brilliant. I find beardies like to come out alot more but that could just be the personalities of my pets. Whichever one yu go for it will be a great pet.

Do you have your tank set up with a SOLID substrate, 110 degree basking spot measured with a digital thermometer, and a reptiglo 8.0 or reptisun 10 UVB bulb? If not, don’t order a beardie yet!
