Hey im new here and need some help lol

Hey im glad i found this site i can tell you guys realy know your stuff about beardies. i am new to this so my name is kalvin and i live in northern idaho (lame lol) i am getting a bearded dragon on friday at petco, i cant buy from a dealer because i dont trust over the internet and there are none local. i have a few supplies already bought from a previos lizard: 10 gallon tank, a red heat bulb, sand substrate (which i now know is bad), hiding logs and stuff. but i dont know exactly every little thing i need for a beardie. my house gets pretty cold up here 60-65, and i cant afford a closed cage, so what kinda of heating do i need? well if anyone can send me some pics of there set up it would be much appreciated. and if anyone can tell me exactly what i need to give my beardie the best home possible i would love it. well thanks guys hope to hear from you soon.

Hey im new here and need some help lol

If you go to the care sheets on this site they are some really great ones, as far as your heating is concerned you will want a basking bulb and make sure to keep their basking spot at least 100-105, and if your house gets below 70 at night I would get a UTH (under tanke heater) and a dimmer switch to bring the temps to like 70-75 where the beardie will be sleeping at night. Dont forget to get your UVB light either a reptisun 10.0 strip or the reptiglow 8.0 strip. You will probably want to start off with a 20 long too as beardies like to have alot of floor space and a 10 gallon with any kind of stuff in it is quite cramped. Good luck!

Hey im new here and need some help lol

Yeah, you def dont have the right set upat all..

10 gallon no, you need a 20 gallon minimum.
sand..deff not! use paper towels or repti-carpet, tile
red bulb..no.. they dont like light at night. Get something to cover the cage too..no way around that.
You need a basking bulb 75 watts for a 20 gallon and get a high basking log, bricks (washed and baked for sanitation) so he can have the right temp 110-115 for baby and 105 for adult.
If the dragon is over 12 inches, you will need a 40 gallon minimum.
You need a long uvb tube bulb like ptisnsnakes said, reptisun 10 or reptiglo 8 ONLY! No coils either!

It sounds like you want to care for this beardie but admitted you cant really do it. Dont put that beardie in those conditions you just described please.

Hey im new here and need some help lol

i have had a few other lizards back in the day and i took good care of them. its just with a beardie i heard there real temperature sensitive and need certian things. i just bought a 55 gallon tank today and some repti carpet, i also bought two probe digital thermometers. i measured the basking spot and it was around 106 which is good, the warm side of the tank only gets to 76 though even with the UTH on high. the cool end is about 64 so thats not to bad. is there anything else that i may be forgetting about i think i have it down pretty well. and thanks for that care sheet it helped out alot.

Hey im new here and need some help lol

You really dont want any part of your tank below 70 degrees. Also what kind of UVB light did you get? and try to get your basking temp up a little more. You can move your basking spot up a few inches and that could bring up the temp... thats what I did.

Hey im new here and need some help lol

Yeah here are your temps you need. For a baby you need 110-115 or really near it..107ish.
For an adult 105.
The cage you got is good, the rpticarpet good, just make sure your prepared to clean the poop out of carpet! :) And make sure you keep the poop out they can transmit diesese.
Yes, what kind of UVB bulb do you have, or are you gonna get?? Dont EVER forget those!! Remember long tube, not coil!!
Also your temps should be at basking 107+ like I said, then the air temp around the basking spot, 95.
The cool side (the other side of the tank) should be 85ish during the day. So get that regulated!
At night the temp should be no lower than 65! If you have an under the tank heater and you can get his ground below him around 70 and put a half log in there, that can work. Just dont make it any higher than 72 b/c they need to shut down at night. Some people like 80 degrees..it all depends.
Do you also have the dusts you need? 3 different kinds....
And the crickets should be no bigger than the space between his eyes...

Hey im new here and need some help lol

i went to petco and talked to the guy about my uv light and he treid to sell me a single uv bulb and to put it in a ceramic hood but i told him that i read i need a uv bar light, he told me that i would be waisting my money for that, he also told me that calcuim sand was the best thing. i dont think he knew what he was talking about so muck lol. well i checked my temps once everything was up and running and the basking spot was at about 110 so i hightened the bulb and got it about 106-7 the warm side of his tank though is only like 76 and no matter what i cant get it higher, the under tank heater makes the ground about 76 but not the air any hotter, the cold side of the tank is about 64 which once agian is to cold lol. and another thing i heard a few people talkin about a dimmer switch? what is that and were can I find one? the crickets are the right size for him and i also bought some mill worms. and i have calcium powder and herptevid powder whatever that is. so can any one tell me what else i need or how i can tweak my cage so it gets warmer lol. thanks everyone
-Kalvin

Hey im new here and need some help lol

Yeah, most pet store employees don’t know squat about the animals they sell. 110 degrees is good for a baby. You could go 115 at the basking site. That may raise the cool end temps a bit. You can get a lamp dimmer at any hardware store for around $10. Don’t feed him meal worms. They have a very hard exoskeleton called chitin that they cannot digest easily. They also aren’t very nutritious for them. Go to www.beautiful dragons.com (one word) for a great food list. You didn’t mention this but you need to offer them a salad daily.

Hey im new here and need some help lol

Try putting two bulbs at the basking area...one basking and one regular household..but more towards the middle, to warm up the tank. The cool side is wwaaayy too cool. So try that. And yeah, pet store people are idiots. The ones that recommend what he said.

Also, yes salads... my bad Sarah..! ;)

Hey im new here and need some help lol

Hello,

I would be careful with raising temps above 110 as it can cause too high of ambient temps especially in glass tanks. Dehydration is the number one killer of babies, most of the time, caused by overheating. The basking temps should be between 95-110 & the cooler end around 78-82. Normally, in a tank of 55 gallon or so, the ambient temps run around 85 which is fine. Anything much higher than that, they don’t have enough room to thermoregulate. You may end up dehydrating him too much.
Are you measuring your temps with a digital probe or temp gun right now?
Beardies can eat butterworms, phoenix worms, crickets, ocassional waxworms, & small roaches. I would stay away from mealworms.
Good luck with your new beardie. :-))

Tracie

Hey im new here and need some help lol

i bought a digital probe, its supposed to be used to check meat and stuff while your cooking but it works just fine. the basking temp is 104 and in the middle the air sits at about 82, my undertank heater (which is just a heat pad bought from wallmart lol) makes the ground on the warm side about 84 and on the cool side about 71 so i think i got it down pretty well i just need to add the lizard lol. but another questions... i have a water dish but i dont think that is enough can i buy just a normal spray bottle to mist his head or do i need something special, and do i need to use botteled water or can i just use tap water? i have alot of Aquafina water but im just not sure lol. thanks tracie for your help, and thanks everyone else, i should have some pics up on friday of him/her.

Hey im new here and need some help lol

what you might have to do since you have a baby beardie is you might have to get a lamp that has a dimmer on it and then go to 150 watt basking balb with the refeclector on it. this way you can jack the temps up and with spring rolling around tho and temperatures flaring you wont have to turn it up all the way but the temps will jack up fairly quicka nd easily with a higher watt basking balb but like i said get a lamp that you can use dim on so that way you can controll the heal. might also help heat up the rest of the tank as well since you will be putting more heat into the tank. oh and if you can find a place with decent silk worms when they get big enough try those. it helps do what the uvb does and asorbs the calcium into there system.

Hey im new here and need some help lol

well tommorow is the big day, im skipping school to get my lizard lol. i have been pretty OCD about my temps and got everything perfect or so they say lol. but one more question, i got the food and temp and basking spots ect but i read that they need botteled watter to drink. i have lots of aquafina bottles but that sounds expensive, can i just use normal tap water, the water up here is good water and we can drink straight from the facet so i dont thnk it would be o big of a problem, ,and cani just ive him a shallow drinking bowel or do i have to mist their cage or head or whatever? but i just want your guys opinion on it thanks

nope use any kinda water you want. tap purffifed ..it dont matter basically theyll just run through it . oh get an eye droper if you can so that way you can try to train it to drink and get use to were the water is coming from. there are you tube videos that can walk you through trying to train em to drink there water since its a big thing for them. and another thing.. good luck with you rbeardy remeber when pickign one out to pick a happy looking one. energetic and one that looks health.. it sucks when things go wrong.

Very cute. I would try to get the basking spot higher though. Your beardie should be about 6-8" away from the UVB. Maybe try stacking some tiles, a brick, or finding a higher branch.

Your gonna want to get another tank soon.the 55s are way too narrow.they are about 13 inches you need something that is at least 18 inches.A 40 gallon breeder will work.your dragon will get over 17 inches long so you can see where it will be hard to live in a tank that is 13 inches wide

For a baby, you should be dusting them every day. You also need to use a multivitamin about 5x a week. Repcal makes great supplements. Get the calcium without D3, they can get too much of that.
