I have been feeding Bojangles crickets by hand for about 4 days now. I have tried feeding her in a rubbermade and in her tank. She just won’t go for them. Any advice fro how to get her to go for them? A friend suggested not feeding her for a day and then putting her in with som crickets. However, i don’t think not feeding her is right and that it is mean to not feed her. Any suggestions with how to get her to eat them are appreciated.

Hey,

If she won’t eat in a different container, you can put some crickets in a bowl. Make sure it’s slick and not too shallow, and the crickets won’t jump out. Just put it in her tank. If she doesn’t eat that day, take them out before lights out and put the bowl of crickets in the next day. She will realize that hand feeding is only a treat and not to be done all the time and she will start eating by herself. She won’t let herself starve. Just make sure you’ve got something in there for her.

Ok, I will try that. She only ate 2 crickets today instead of her usual 40ish so I think she will be hungry tomorrow. They were somewhat larger than what she is use to but I wanted to feed them to her before they grew anymore. How do you suggest I slick the glass container up?

Hey,

If you use like a glass or ceramic, even plastic, it is already slick enough. Something that will slow the crickets down is putting them in the freezer for about 15 to 20 seconds.

Well, day 2 and she hasn’t eaten any of the crickets yet. Are you sure she will go for them?

What are your temps in your enclosure?

When do you offer her her crickets and youshould make an order to LLLreptile.com and get some roaches for her.. they love those things! Much better for them anyways!

Her temps are 86 on cool side and 107 on basking side. I am just leaving the small container with 7 crickets in it all day so when sh decides to go for them they are there. They don’t seem to intrigue her. I know she is hungry because when i offered her one by hand she ate is ASAP. I was planning on buying silk worms from mullberry farms on Friday.

My guy wont even touch silkies.. but when he sees those roaches he flips out! I would try to feed her later in the day like 2pm if you wake her in the morning. She should pretty hungry by then. But, if you keep the crix in her enclosure all day she will get used to them and not desire them. I would make her real hungry.. as long as you keep greens in there all day she wont starve herself. You have to get her out of this "hand fed" thing. My iggy is having an issue with that..but that is a different story. Just try not to feed her till late in the day and I’d order small roaches... the size between her eyes of course. :)
Dust them real good and they wont crawl fast enough but enough to intrege her at least. They last longer than silkies and they dont stink or fly.

Ill run an experiment. Ill buy a small amount of silk worms and a small amount of roaches to see what she prefers. I don’t mind paying for both and her not eating one of them. Its worth it to find what she desires the most.
