Thats what i was thinking, if thats wood chips you should remove it asap, and replace it with paper towel or slate tile or something but def not wood chips or sand. If he decides to eat a piece of that it could do alot of damage...even death!

My beardie The beardies name is actually Lightning (lighting was a spelling mistake!). The shop where we bought him recommended woodchips for his viv rather than sand, he rarely gets them in his mouth and on the occasion that he has he always spits them out. He regularly goes back the the reptile shop for a check up and they say he’s doing well and growing like he should be with no problems. We are in the process of building him a new viv which will be much better than the one he’s in. He’s very friendly and enjoys human interaction. He eats well, crickets are his favourite (dusted in vit powder of course). All the temps in the viv are correct and he has a bath twice a week.
By the way ’snoop hound’ is in bed because he is only ten and this is his mum writing this post, he wanted to join this forum to share his enthusiasm for his little pal and to increase his knowledge of bearded dragons. He cares for him himself with some adult supervision and takes the responsibility seriously which i think is great!
We have other reptiles in the house including an iguana, a plumed basilisk and a tokay gecko and all are thriving.

Of corse the pet store you bought him in said woodchips would be fine because the truth is, they really don’t know much about the reptiles they keep at all! He rarely gets them in his mouth you say? Well one time is to much and what about when you are not there and you don’t see how much he eats...if you leave those in there it is going to cause problems, maybe not right away, but it will! What do you mean by going back to the shop for a check up? A vet you mean? because like i said if it’s at the pet store they could tell you he is fine by looking at him but thats not good enough. They wouldn’t know if he was sick or healthy just by looking at him. I’m glad you clarified that your son is only ten lol, that explaines alot, lol and it’s great that he is taking responsibility for the beardie but i really think you should remove the woodchips for the beardies sake. Good luck!

My beardie OK the pet store I got my beardie at has a reptile vet in the store, and I am sure it is not the only pet store that does that, but once again I never said that wood or sand was good for them if you look I no longer have mine on sand because its bad for them, and I have pics from a friend in Australia that his job is to take care of bearded dragons and other reptiles at the rescue center there and he seems to think that they live on SAND,grass, wood and Clay but that is not the point the bearded dragon "Lightning" does need to get off the wood, and unless you live in Australia or know more then "Chad" my friend then you can talk to him I will be happy to give any one his #.Later

My beardie Thanks link24 and no i am trying to be hard or mean about it just telling it like it is! It is a fact that woodchips are not meant for beardies and def not sand. Just looking out for the beardie thats all. I love beardies soooooo much and it really makes me sad to know it may die due to choking on a piece of it or it being impacted by it, just trying to help so i am sorry if it sounded like i was being to hard.

My beardie
Believe me when i say, if it were possible for me to get all beardies back to their true home, i def would do that, i have watched my own beardies many times and said "i wish i could take you home" but thats not how it is. I also read that by beardies living in homes with loving families who care for them properly actually live ALOT longer then they would in the wild because of the fact that we can prevent them from bringing harm to themselves and caring for them much better than they would on their own because you are right, in the wild they do eat things not good for them because they don’t know the difference, but we do. Lots of luck.

My beardie It is true that beardie’s eat their "substrate" in the wild. It’s also true that they live on many different "substrates" in the wild (like the ones you mentioned). They also get impacted in the wild. A beardie’s lifespan in the wild is 3-5 years. In captivity, it’s 7-10. No matter how hard we try, we can’t recreate a beardie’s natural environment in a captivity situation.
Quote: if you love beardys that much then why dont you enjoy them in there true home the wild .
That would be ok in a perfect world. The problem is, there are alot of beardie’s in other parts of the world that need good homes. What do you think a pet store is going to do with a beardie if you refuse to buy it? Release it in Australia? No, they’ll just sell it to someone else. You said it yourself. If you questioned the wood chips and you know they don’t live on them in the wild, why are you still using them? It doesn’t matter if you feed your beardie in a seperate container either. They explore their environment by licking the things in it, including the substrate. I personally use rough tile. If you must use sand, use washed and sifted play sand. Even that isn’t safe really. Whatever you do, please take out the wood chips. That really isn’t a suitable substrate for a beardie.
