Anything else??? Hello all, I am new the beardies. I just purchased my first one this past weekend. He is a 7 week old male named "Camo" thanks to my kids. Anyways, so far he’s pretty awesome, very active, loves to bask under his heat lamp and doesn’t mind to be handled. For now he is in a 20 gallon set up with a Repti Glo 10.0 UVB light and has a 100 watt basking lamp. The temps on the cool side are 83 degrees and 96-99 degrees under the basking lamp. Are these temps okay? Also, I have been feeding him some mixed greens, crickets (dusted with Dragon dust) and he’s also had a few waxworms. He’s not eating very many greens , but loves the crickets (about 15-20 a feeding), I’m feeding him twice a day with the crickets. What else should I be feeding him? I’ve also been leaving him the Juvenile Dragon Pellets(food) in his cage but doesn’t seem to have touched them. I have changed them everyday so that they are fresh. Is there anything else that I should be doing? Am I feeding him enough food? Any help or tips would be great.
Thanks
Jen

you need to raise the basking temps to 110-115. babies need higher temps to help digest their food. the cool side is ok. the greens will come, just keep offering him fresh greens every morning. feed him 3 times a day. get some silk worms, butterworms, and phoenix worms. take out the pellets, they are hard and can hurt his jaw. i would get a 40 gallon breeder tank, or build your own enclosure. i have mine in a 4L x 2W x 2D. they grow really fast! what kind of substrate are you using? when mine were that little, i used unscented, dye free plain white paper towels. legend, my beardie is about 2 months now and tring to help me type... lol if you have any questions, just ask, there are alot of knowledgeable people on this forum. anita

Anything else??? Oaky, I’ll raise the temps in the cage. As for the silkworms, butterworms and phoenix worms, they are very hard to come by where I live. I moisten the pellets so that they are not hard, there actually quite soft.
I already have a larger enclosure that my husband made for my uromastyx (which I no longer have) so I will switch Camo into it when he gets bigger. As for substrate. I’m using repti carpet and is working out fine.
How many crickets should I be feeding him on a daily basis? Also should i be offering fruits and veggies or do I wait until he’s older?

At his age offer him as many crickets as he can eat in a 10-15 min period three times a day and offer him fruits and vegies fresh every day [more vegies than fruit]. Don’t worry if he doesn’t eat the vegies right away, in time, he will learn to relish them. Hes so cute! Good luck.

Anything else??? The reptiglo 10’s are too strong and give off a toxic chemical to beardies and turtles that cause eye issues and death. If you get the reptiGLO 8, that is ok. Or go to LLLreptile.com and get the reptiSUN 10 for 20 bucks! Great deal! The name at the end "sun" and "glo" are totally different brands and they give off different uvb’s and different chemiclas. but those 2 I gave you (the reptiglo 8 and the reptisun 10) are proven to be perfect for your beardie.
Also, fruits shouldnt be given daily, also no carrots either. Go to this link and you will see the nutrition guide for them.
Link
Now as you will see on this care sheet it gives you the kind of insects they can eat and the links to get to them. Then under it is all about veggies and ruits and how often to feed. But I will let you know that crickets are high id phosphorus and that isnt good for a beardie so the calcium dusting is needed. Make sure that this "dragon dust" isnt just a supplement of vitamins and it has the calcium carbonate ingredient in it. They need that DAILY every feeding as babies. Also, onc a week dust his insects with calcium WITH VitD3 in it. So you need 2 dusts..one without the vitd3 and one with. Reptivite is a good brand and so is Jurassi Cal. So..go check it out. The phosphorus in the crickets depleat the calcium in the dragon so thats why we dust so much. Now, you can also get roaches which I feed my guy and he loves them. They will plump them up real nicely. Dont ever feed them mealworms! Very hard on them, they cant digest the hard shells. Plus, the roaches have a better meat to shell ratio than any other shelled insect. Silkworms are very high in calcium and good for them..so unless you live in a state where they dont deliver to you.. GET SOME! :) Esp. the roaches! If you need help on how to house them, I’ll help ya! :)
Other than that... you sound like your on the right track. Also, read the caresheet on that linkas well... it will tell you the right temps which should be no lower than 107 b/c they need at least 102 to digest their food.
Good luck! L~

Anything else??? Thanks for the info and the link to the other site. I already have all the powders and vitamins already so I’m good there. As for temps in his cage, I’m gonna start working on that. What should be the temps during the night time? Also can I cup feed him, it’s what I use to do with my chameleon, that way I didn’t have crickets roaming all over the cage.

Anything else??? You can feed him any way you want really. If you dont want crix running around, then just drop one in at a time. Thats what I do when I feed crix. Like I said, I like roaches.
The temps at night shouldnt go below 65 degrees and you dont need any heat source and esp no lights on!!
And your welcome for the info! :)

Anything else??? The prices are reasonable for the feeders but the shipping costs are gonna hurt, I live in Canada so the costs are up there. None of the pet store here carry silkies or roaches, just the regular stuff. I guess I have some work to do to find some feeders here in Canada. Thanks again for all the info.

Hey 4bodson, i live in Canada as well and a coupple good sites i get silks from are canadianfeeders.com or bugorder.com. Although the bugorder site won’t have silks until Sept, but the canadianfeeders do have them. I haven’t found a site for Canada who has roaches yet but i would love to replace crickets with roaches so hopefully i will find one soon. Good luck!

Anything else??? You were right about the shipping cost and the membership fees to Canadian Feeders. I think it’s kinda crazy. I won’t pay a membership fee to buy feeders. Anyways I did find another store called Ontario Silkworm Pastures. Their prices are awesome, so I’m waiting to find out how bad the shipping is. Unfortunatly, they don’t carry the roaches.
OMG, Camo is finally eating his greens, he’s doing it I right. Thanks god!! Yah for him.LOL
Well, I’ll kep ta posted if I find any roaches.

Anything else??? Yoshi55- When you said Repti GLO 10.0’s were bad for Bearded dragons, did you mean the compact or the Linear Flourescents?
I don’t have bearded’s, I have Green Basilisk but I use 8.0/10.0 Repti GLO’s for my 6x5x4 enclosure.
I havn’t heard ANYTHING bad about the 10.0 Repti GLO flourescents, only bad things about compacts. Let me know, thanks!

Anything else??? Hey Seiryu- yeah they are bad. The compact and coils are all bad. And that perticular long tube reptiglo 10 is bad. But.. they have done tests on a lot of animals and well I have an iggy and a beardie and I have only heard of the coils and certain uvb’s such as the reptiglo 10’s being bad for beardies and turtles. I dont know about the basiliks though. I will have to find the site you need to go to and you can read alllll the info on the bad uvb’s. It’s very confusing honestly and most of the brands have been pulled from shelves but some still havent. The reason these brands and strengths are bad are b/c they are sprayed with a chemical that hurts their eyes and can cause death and or blindness. Also, they permit UVC which is harmful to living organisims let alone animals!! Different strengths are needed for different reptiles though. So like I said, I’ll get the link for ya!

Only companies I saw were Zoomed and it talked about ReptiSUNs

Anything else??? I use the 8.0/10.0 for my Basilisk as well and no problems.
The site he linked while I couldn’t read through, didn’t say anything about ExoTerra whatsoever. Now I know the compact flourescents are bad and I won’t use those.
However, from what I skimmed through, it was about zoomed’s 10.0’s.

I use the reptisun 10. Also, for my iggy, I havent had any probs with him. He was on a coil for a while until I read the uvb thing. He never had problems though. I just want to be safe than sorry!

Anything else??? Well, I tried cup feeding Camo, and it’s going quite well. He just kinda jumps in the container and goes nuts on the crickets. When he’s done he jumps out and goes to his basking spot. Doing very well with the greens as well. I have to go get some veggies tomoroow so I’ll see what he does with those. Havent’ had any luck finding another UVB ulb. I went to LLLreptiles and didn’t find any there. And none of the local petstores carry them so I’m stuck with what I have for now.
Pretty cool thing happened tonight, my husband showed me that Camo was sleeping in the greenery that I placed on the glass in the enclosure. So he’s sleeping pretty much at the top of the cage. Does anyones beardies do this?
