Crickets, roaches, butterworms, silkworms and phoenix worms!

Hey guys,

I have a question about the kind of diet a bearded dragon should have as a about a junvenile dragon..
Even though i do not have one yet, but will this summer. I saw this great link from another users post and found all the different kinds of insects that a dragon should have in its diet. Link

It has crickets, mealworms, silkworms, butterworms, phoenix worms and roaches and etc.

Crickets are used as the staple diet most of the time, but could you switch over to let say the other ones as staple?
Or are their protein/fat content and etc too high?
It sayts that the butterworms are more fatty nutritional wise and that that the phoenix worms are super high in calcium.

So how would you switch off the diet and stuff?
this is really interesting and i’m trying to prepare for everything before i get my beardy in the summer ;]

Thanks a lot.

The only staple insects are roaches, silks and crix. Pheonix worms are very high in calcium but I don’t think enough research has been done on them to deem them a good staple. I do think pheonix, horn, super (not mealworms, very high in fat and a hard exoskeleton that’s difficult to digest), wax and butter worms are ok for an occassional treat.

Okay so:

Crickets, Silkworms and Roaches are good staple diets...

and the rest is an occasional...

Mmm i heard that the roaches are really good for fattening up the young ones, but i dont know what my parent’s responses are gonna be if i start raising or just keeping roaches in the house..lol
they were already slightly disgusted at my crickets, since they had escpaed a couple of times..lol

I would liike to have roaches as a staple diet for my dragon, but i might go with crickets and/or silks.. since they are a lot nicer looking hahaha.. so yeah.

Thanks.

Oh and do you know what the best roaches are?
as in cleanliness, care and what not.
I hope there aren’t any that can FLYYY.. like as soon as i open the lid they start swarming mee hahaha.
yeah

i might just switch them on and off... if the roaches aren’t too much of a pest.. lets just hope i never have roaches escape like my crickets.. lol

no meal worms, they have a hard shell that the beardies can not digest, and can cause impaction!! as for the roaches, i haven’t tried them myself, but i have heard that you keep them in a tall rubbermaid container and have a heat lamp on them, but again, this is just what i have heard. i personally use a combination of crix, greens and veggies, occasional carrots and fruit, silk worms, butter worms and phoenix worms. make sure you get the proper supplements too, cause calcium is extremely important to beardies and reptiles.

Hey Cappy.. I have lobster roaches and I’m about to get more. Anyways.. order those. They are great. They do crawl up surfaces but they dont fly! :) If you get a large tupperware like up to your knees..a 100 gallon I think and put your roaches in there... put a 3" line of vaseline on the top of the sides so when and if they crawl up the sides they will get detured. They usuually dont get stuck,so dont worry. After a day or two they become chill and hang out on the bottom. You need egg crates..that is their "beds" and they will mate. If you put a heat pad under them or a light that has the heat up to 92 or so they will mate. Then you wont have to order many more. But remember, when you get them, they come in all sizes so only feed your beardie (when you get it) the size between his eyes and keep the other ones for mating. I actually got low so now I am taking the big ones and cutting the heads off and them in half for my baby and he loves them! :) I’m about to order 200 more though so I will be good. They do really fatten the beardie up for sure! His belly gets so fat he looks like he is gonna explode! Hope this helped! Good luck and good job on researching BEFORE you get the beardie..and tell your parents that the roaches dont escape, they dont fly, they barely smell and they arent expensive b/c you can breed them and they will never know they are there! :)

Hey Edel!
thanks for the link its really helpful! I put it as favorite along with 2340932409234 of other links i have hahah to get ready for my beardy ;]
i’ve been doing this since.. March ;]

All this insect variety diet stuff is all so interesting

I would REALLY REALLY like to feed my future beardy roaches, but on the site...well they just REALLY freak me out.
I mean when i go into my garage late at night, i see them crawling around on the floor and occasionally up on the cabinates.. *SHIVERS *.
Lol
Oh dont worry, im not gonna go roach hunting in there and feed to my pets...eew..

Hey lauren!
Thanks for you long and descriptive rec!
hahahah yeah climbing on things would be a problem!
But thats really good bout the no wings thing, that would be a big no no and i dont want to have to catch roaches and crickets in the house when they escape.
EWWW.. hahahah chopping the adults in half?
hahaahah oh man, i dont know if i’ll be able to take it to another level like that.. haha
but i guess you gotta do what you gotta do to feed your pets...

wow all this has been really informative!
Those silkworms look really really cute! I used to raise them as pets....
..............................
lol i know my mom’s going to give me that lecture bout how " evil " it is to raise and fatten something and then feed it to your OTHER PET..
lol
She gave me that lecture a while back bout me trying to fatten my crickets and then feeding it all to Duke, my WDTF. lol

Anyways thanks a lot guys.
I’m excited!
OH and dont worry lauren
i’ve been reseraching since march, favorte-ingg all the best beardy breeders, suppliers, and this site of course.
I’ll get my beardy summer ;]

Hey Lisa.. I am glad your doing your research and I know your on the other forum (community forum) so I am sure you are doing your research and watching what all the others have to say! And about those roaches.. I’ll tell you something.. I HATE roaches..and anything that crawls.. I NEVER touched a cricket esp a roach before..till I got the beardie. I hadnt touched a cricket till the other day when I had no choice but to pick the last of the batch up to feed to Scooter. Now.. the roaches.. my hubby is the one that takes care of the head chopping and getting them...but the other day it was time to feed and hubby...was at work! And like I said, we were low so we had only big ones...it was a challenge to do..but like you said, you gotta do what you gotta do to keep your lil ones alive! I couldnt even watch my hubby cut them....now I got it down. Also, the roaches do have wings BUT they dont fly! :) Good luck again! Lauren~
