 Bearded Dragon Caughing, Wheezing, Sneezing?

My 8 month old beardie is acting kind of weird. She opens her mouth sometimes and flails her head around and is making a wheezing noise? I just took her to the vet a couple weeks ago with my other beardie and they both were treated for parasites just in case. The one that is acting this way was given meds for respiratory problems just in case. Its like she has a nasty taste in her mouth and trying to spit it out and she sticks her tongue out. Its really starting to worry me. Should I bring her back to the vet? Please let me know what it could be. Thanks.

Was it a confirmed RI case or have you self diagnosed it and started giving it RI medication?

I don’t self diagnose anything. I brought both of my Beardies to the vet so they could be checked over. I told the Vet about what was going on and he suggested the medications. I did exactly what was told and gave her the medication once daily at the same time, 11:30am. When it comes to my pets I don’t self diagnose.

So they have been on meds for two weeks? Are the meds done? If there is no change I would definately bring her back...And keep her temps up at night as well in the mid 80’s, it will help fight off the infection. Good luck!

Nancy.

He’s also a reptile expert vet with many years of experience and one of the best I could find in Minnesota. I drove 54 miles one way to see this vet because of his reputation and background.

Yes the one took her first dose the day of the vet check up and then 2 weeks later. The other one that has been acting weird finished her meds on friday which was 2 weeks total of taking the meds every day. How should i keep her temps up at night? I have them at about 105 basking and 80 on the cool side during the day with the lights on but at night the temps go down to about 70 and I don’t really have a way to get the temps up without the lights on.

Well, if the meds are done and she is no better, bring her back...RI is something that will just keep getting worst without treatment, she may need stronger meds....

Can you get a moonlight bulb for reptiles? They sell them at pet stores most of the time...Her temps should be higher than 70 at night, just while she is sick though....

I will have to get her a moonlight bulb tomorrow after work. Should I just get two so the other dragon can have one too? What wattage do you think I should get and what are the absolute best temps for them at night time? Should I just keep the moonlights on even after she gets better? I will make another appointment for her also.

If the other dragon is sick as well, yes, keep a light on him as well. I would keep the temps around 85f or so, and just while they are sick. Once they are 100% better, no need for them. The heat will help fight off infection. I would get a 50 whatt, you can always move it close enough to the dragons to achieve proper temps....I hope they will be ok :)

I will buy two lights one for each then. Thanks a lot for your help. The other one isn’t sick at all but I will get her a light too just to make sure the temps are always in the right range. Do you know of a good temp gun? Are any of the ones on ebay alright to use? They seem to be pretty affordable on there.

If the other isn’t sick, no need for a heat source at night. She won’t beable to "shut down" properly at night with heat, it’s just for the other one while she is sick...

temp gun here

At night, the temps can reach as low as 60f and the beardie will be just fine. They need cooler temps at night, it’s just as important as the day time temps....

Your welcome :)

How many hours per day do you leave the lights on? It should be 12-14 hours of daylight...Poor baby, I hope she feels better soon...

That sounds good Ray, what are the normal basking temps with the 100 whatt? I would even keep the basking temps a little higher for her while she is sick, no higher than 110f though...

Hey Nancy I received my temp gun in the mail yesterday and its great! I also have the infared light running at night keeping my girls nice and warm at about 80. They’re both in there own 50 gallon tanks so they both got one. My 8 month old, Lucia is doing much better. I haven’t heard her caughing in days! She has more energy and has been running around with my 6 month old Lucy and having a good time. Thanks for your help.
