 Eyes Stay Shut

Hi, I just started working at a pet store (a good one) and i noticed one of the baby bearded dragons wasn’t moving much, and kept his eyes closed. I took him out and found he had a shedding problem in one eye, but the other was fine. the next shift i worked, which was 2 days later, he still had his eyes closed. I was allowed to bring him home, so i fed him alot of vitamins. My thoughts where that he either had vitamin deficiency, or the lights where too bright for him, although all the other beardies are lively and healthy. Any help on what I should do??

what kind of uv light did they have on him? if it is a coil bulb, take it away and get a reptisun 10 or a mega ray bulb on him. the coil lights have been known to cause eye trouble. give him soaks in warm water, and if it is stuck shed, take a damp q-tip and gently work away the shed. if it is the bulb, within a couple of days with a better light, he should be opening his eyes, moving around and eating again. make sure his food is dusted with calcium at every feeding and if i remember correctly, vitamins are once a week. keep me posted.

p.s. what are your temps at?

I am pretty sure it a tube and not a bulb, but I’ll check for that today to make sure, and the I’ll check on the temps. He had shedding problems with one of his eyes 3 days ago, i got it off soon after noticing. The food is dusted with calcium except he wont eat them because he can’t see lol. I managed to give him alot of vitamins last night, and a lot of good lettuce. Ive kept him in a dark place with a heating pad instead of a light just incase it was the light that was bugging him. The only time he would open his eyes were when he was moving from a dark spot to a bright spot.

I also found out one of them has yellow fungus, but he is alert, eyes are open. The other one’s skin is very dark around its waist and part of its hind legs, and he is very unactive, eyes mostly shut, one eye severly crusted. The one from yesterday seems to be doing alot better, much more lively, but still won’t open his eyes. Advice?

No offense, but there aren’t any "good" pet stores, because majority of them keep animals but not with proper husbandry etc. If many babies are getting sick, then they are not properly cared for.

What is the brand of the light??
What are the temps at BASKING and COOL END??
How far from the basking spot can they get to??
Is there a hide??
What is the substrate (ie. sand, tile, carpet)??

There are so many more questions people will come by asking, so I suggest you get all the info you can about the care being given to them at the pet store.

Also, try feeding them baby food through a syringe if the issue is they can not see the food so they are starving themselves. Someone will let you know which ones will be good to try, I can’t remember, I think chicken was one? (never had this problem, so I don’t focus on it very much).

Will the pet store get vet attention for these babies? It’s great they are allowing you to separate the ones showing sick symptoms... that’s a good thing, in case of parasites, we wouldn’t want all the beardies to get sick.

I hope for the best of these babies, keep it up and keep watch for the little ones!

I dont work till Sunday but I’m going in to get some stuff tomorow anyways. I called in today and one of the one that looked wet died =(. Im not sure the brand of light, the temps of the basking and cool end,. but they are in a 15 or 20 gallon tank. They are around 9-10c, long. They have more then one hide. The substrate is some type of dirt( I forget what exacly) and moss. I’m going to ask why they do that though.. I’d rather have them on paper towel..

I have been liquifying bearded dragon pellets and feeding them that.. im going to try and find fluckers repti-aid but if i can’t ill get chicken and veggie baby food (Ive had to syringe feed before).

We are contacting another PJ’s Pets too see f their beardies have the same problem, but ill ask about a vet.
