 Petco Beardie

Hello,

Everyone’s been very helpfull thus far and I really want to say thank you!
However I do have another question/concern.
This time its not our little guy, Nicol Bolas though, we adopted a larger BD from petco that they were trying to get out becuase he was too big to be housed with the smaller beardies. We didn’t notice any signs of ill health other than every time we went to see him, he was always very very chilly. Now that we have him home, he seems to rest on one paw a little bit funny, like he’ll bend it under sort of when standing on it.
His limbs also twitch a tiny bit when he’s basking. You really have to watch closely to see it, and it only happens when he’s in a resing position. Other than that he gets around to explore is surroundings wonderfully, and he’s got a nice big appetite.
I’ve read that the twitching can be a sign of MBD but I don’t know if I’m just being paranoid. Petco has a 15 day warranty where they will take him to a vet, but I don’t trust them to tell me all the right information.

Does any one else’s beardie do this?

Again, thank you very much

that’s MBD, just early. get a good UVB on him, and good calcium supplements; he’ll probably be all right. there are tons of posts about lighting and supplementation on this forum, along with a post for new beardie owners. i’d buy a lizard from craigslist before i’d buy one from petco. those people have no idea what they’re doing.

One of our beardies does that as well, she kind of walks on the side of her front feet. I’ve wondered about that, but she has seemed ok otherwise.

We’ve got a reptisun 10 and dust most all of his food with calci-powder. I’ve read somewhere that if you use a light fixture from walmart that you should take off the plastic cover over the bulb, is that true? does it interfere with the uvb?

I agree completely about petco etc, however I do have to stick up for one girl that works at my local one, she has two beardies herself and hates the way the pet store handles them, but she doesn’t have much say unfortunately. But that’s only one good employee amongst a whole bunch of crappy chain pet stores.

yes plastic and glass block out uvb rays

also make sure he can get within 6-8 inches to the bulb

and unfortunatly the employees dont have much say, i work at a petstore and i pretty much have to do what i am told but we get away with not doing alot of stuff we are supposed to do lol it really depends on the managers and if you have ones that really care about the animals or ones that only care about the store and making money

that’s why before i say pet store employees are idiots i be sure and add the word, "most." i used to work in a pet store, and lucky for me, the owner knew she didn’t know what she was doing and pretty much let me have my way.

It’s really a shame there are managers like that who only care about the money.
Update on Annihilator that I think is the best thing ever: he loves to cruise around on our shoulders, like a little pirate parrot! He fell asleep like that last night.

In my search for regular calcium, I only found calcium with d3, which he’s getting now. The only pure calcium I could find that wasn’t laden down with at least ten other things (one of which being ash) was labeled as being for leapord geckoes. Would that work or is it specifically for leapord geckoes?
I feel so bad for the little guy sometimes, we’re trying to find his favorite foods (other than waxworms which were a huge hit with both of them) and we terrified him with water melon. Chopped it up and set it in his food dish, he went over and licked it. Then ran away and hid.
We’ve also noticed that both of our b.d.s run around their cage licking things inside of it but ignoring their greens. So we assume they aren’t hungry. Are they like snakes in that it’s just a better sense to explore with?
