Injured eye and wont eat... please help

I have a bearded dragon who i would guess is about four months old. She has always been a fussy eater and mostly will only eat greens and baby food. She hurt her eye almost four weeks ago and it is still puffy and swollen almost shut. She can still see through it but when her head shed the whole area around her eye didn’t come off.

I’ve been offering crickets everyday (which she eats on occasion) and giving her different veggie babyfood and mixing calcium in. She is active and curious, but her back legs and tail have become extremely thin. Her cage is nice and warm. Basking area around 100-110 degrees. I’m trying very hard but she is just so labor intensive i’m very worried. I dont know what else to do. If you have any ideas please help....

I live in alaska, so there isn’t a lizard vet here.

Hey Akaba,

What type of UV bulb are you using for your dragon? There are some out there that have harmed the dragon’s eyes.....The reptiglo 10.0 I believe is one of them. As well as some of the coiled ones.

I agree with Edel about the UV lighting, so letting us know which one you use will help. For the stuck shed around the eye, just give her warm soaks and take a wet Q tip and gently rub around the eye. You can also get some turtle eye drops for the eye as well, it may help with the swelling and or infection. Also, if her back legs and tail have become very skinny, it could be a sign of paracites which she will need to be treated for, is there no vet there at all she could see? If she has a heavy load of paracites thats left untreated it will eventually kill her.

One more thing, if you cannot get to a vet, go to beautiful dragons .com. click on store, and under medications you can order the Panacur paste (Fenbendazole) It treats most types of paracites and is very mild so will not harm your beardie. I rescued a water dragon last year that had pinworms and this Panacur got rid of the paracites....

Good luck with her..

Akaba ,

I was visiting the feed store the other day ....for horse and tack. They have an ointment for horses about 8.95 US ...a small tube ...cures pink eye and infections of the eye....it is the next best thing to human prescription drugs you can get ...It is an antibiotic cream ...apply sparingly to the eye / eye brow / lid...use a Q tip. I hope you can find something that works for you. If it is an infection and it is not treated it can cause other issues.

If you get some turtle drops like Nancy said and that doesn’t help this would be the next step. Always good to have a medical kit on hand for treating your reptiles.

How did the injury occur?? Describe in more detail the swelling /appearance of this eye. Post a picture so we can see...

well since the eye is on the face near the mouth , everytime she tries to eat like opens her mouth it could hurt its eye so wont eat to not feel pain.

thank you for all the good ideas! I will take a picture of her eye tomorrow and post it. And get started with all the other ideas :)

I am not sure how the injury started, i thought i watched a cricket bite her. I think it was a small injury that just got infected.
I hope everyone had a happy halloween!

Awww, poor baby. She doesn’t look well at all. Do you bathe her at all? She looks like she has some shed that you can help get off, and she looks a little dehydrated. Give her lots of warm soaks in luke warm water and add a little Pedylite to the bath water, it will help. Did you manage to find any of those turtle eye drops? Which UV light are you using for her? Sorry if you told us already...

i did also do the qtip rub around her eye... which didn’t seem to bother her. I just ordered the anti parasitic medicine from beautiful dragons. It should be getting here by the end of the week.

shes so awesome and such a trooper I hope she gets better soon

It doersn’t look near as bad as you said it did ....I see no fluid build up or infection ...nor any sign of secretions..... The tube of ointment will be nice to have on hand ...but I think you may be over stating the condition.

Let me just offer this ....any drug store will have solution for contact lenses .... a sterile soothing eye wash ...typically saline solution. This would be safe and non medicated .... so it will just sooth the eye. If you are worried about stuck shed there are 3 things that will help immensely....

1 Shed ease...sold at the reptile stores ..and over priced.
2 Mineral oil ...olive oil...and lastly vegtable oil, I prefer olive oil and have used liberal amounts safely on a water dragon. Please use very little. It goes a long ways. Pour a small amount into a seperate container and use a Q tip to apply. Try not to get into the actual eye ....just the scales brow, etc. After a day or two any stuck shed will usually come off very easily ...feel free to use bathing methods in conjunction with the olive oil.

You must use good judgement to decide what is the problem ...and what is the remedy...sometimes the simplest things are easier and safer to attempt first.
