 Squishy has a black beard

Yesterday on Halloween my Bearded Dragon was acting a little funny, didn’t eat that much and was acting scared. Then he turned black, my husband said he found out they will do that when it’s their mating cycle. Here’s a picture when he was changing color, he’s back to his normal color now.

Has anyone else seen this? Is he still healthy? Should I be worried? Thanks :)

They normally black beard when stressed. Maybe there was too much fun Halloween commotion :) It’s normal, my guy does it too :P

Thanks for the responses, I was worried about him. He ate a lot today but he did it again this morning(beard turned black), I also ordered him another heat light because it was only at a high of 95 in his tank today. He’s in a 50gallon tank so i think he needs another heat lamp because it’s been colder in the house. Thanks again!! :)

Spike does something like taht too. His belly and neck are usually white, but at times, I look at him and he’s got gray or black looking on his neck and belly. I too am wondering what in the world is going on. Nothing serious?

That looks like normal beardie behavior to me. They do that when they’re mad, see a potential rival, or are bothered by something else. When Taz sees his reflection in a mirror he’ll commonly black beard. Other times he does it is when he went to the vet and got a blood test, attacked a mini remote controlled car (zip-zap), and when the dog sniffs him for too long. They can even black beard at you, but it’s very rare that they exhibit aggression towards their owners. If your beardie frequently black beards then check the environment. Make sure he/she can’t see a reflection, doesn’t spot a lizard-like object (like a fake stuffed lizard or plastic toy lizard), and doesn’t see something that would stress him/her out (like a cat or crazy little kids running around). Your beardie may also be stressed out by seeing lots of new faces and costumes around Halloween time.

There’s really not anything to be worried about though. If your beardie was constantly jet-black bearding all day long then it might be cause for alarm signalling some sort of internal injury. Your beardie is likely just fine and acting like he/she is supposed to.
